My best friend has been telling me about the genius writing of Fitzek for quite some time and finally I decided to read one of his books. The only thought about me waiting this long is: WHY THE FUCK DIDN‘T I READ ANY OF HIS WORK BEFORE?
His writing is genius and the story is one of the best thrillers I have ever read. Fitzek is a german author but he also publishes his stories in other languages as well. So please make sure to give his books a try. This one might be the best first book to read of his. It‘s such a genius crafted thriller that has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I just couldn‘t put it down at all, which is also why I am currently awake at 2:14am to write this review. His writing is so easy to follow and so captivating but also so genius at the same time. I don‘t want to talk too much about the plot/story but I should give you some trigger warnings, so if any of these topics are ones that bother you to read about, please skip this one. Trigger warnings: murder, rape, sadism, sexual assault, assault, torture, mental illness, suicide, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, child death, blood, physical abuse, sexism and overall violence. I know these are a lot, but this is a thriller so some of these are a given…still I wanted to mention them incase any of these topics are hard for you to handle.
Personally this by far my favorite book of his and I read almost every one of them..
3.5 stars
I have read some of this authors work before and have enjoyed them, so when I saw that this was out I was immediately interested. Then I read the blurb and I was even more intrigued. I was expecting a tense, fast paced thriller that I would enjoy as much as his previous work.
Unfortunately this didn't quite meet my expectations.
The main problem I had is this didn't feel like the book advertised on the blurb. I found it quite misleading in fact. Going off the blurb it sounds like the main character Klara is being stalked on her way home and that Jules working the helpline is helping her get home safely. Whilst some of that did happen (trying not to give away any spoilers), I ended up reading a book that was a bit different to what I expected.
I was hoping that this would be tense and fast paced, which it certainly was. The writing and plot flowed really well and it made you want to keep reading. I would have liked this to have included some mixed media as I feel this would have really upped the tension.
However, in the final third I must admit I got quite confused, as the plot got more convoluted. I didn't lose my way completely, but this did spoil my enjoyment of the book.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
This book was ever so confusing and I struggled to keep reading. The plot was all over the place and I ended up making notes on the side to complete. It is definitely not a book I understood.
Klara calls a helpline called Walk Me Home, and Jules is manning the lines. Klara is being followed, she says, and she is terrified.
The man following her told her the date that he will kill her, and that date has arrived.
A terrifying story. So full of twists and turns. The tension keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. A good book, but I am pleased that I finished it before I go to bed tonight!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Well...... I hadn't heard about this author before and thought the premise sounded amazing. However. Em.... to say I got more than I bargained for is putting it mildly. Apparently there is a trigger warning at the start re domestic violence but I did not expect that level of brutality to be honest. Think revenge porn, torture , humiliation, sexual assault, group non consensual, human trafficking, infantacide, suicide, child abuse........ and that not even really the actual plot, just this really twisted and dark theme that runs throughout the book for no real reason.
Bit of a spoiler here and for once i dont even care, but think the level of a woman being raped and tortured and then the men all deciding whether to use the branding iron or whatever to either put in her eyes and blind her with the burning hot inpliment or insert into her vaginally and i dont even know what the outcome of that is supposed to be. Nice huh? And what exactly does that add to the plot of any story?
The book is really over the top and insane in terms of all these connections and coincidences and it does work and make for such a fast paced whirlwind of a story. Absolutely! Clearly it's not going to happen in real life but that is why it's a fiction book, these things are allowed. I just personally think that amazing, entertaining plot would have been just as effective without the shock factor of murdering kids and group torture and rape. I dont think a trigger warning for domestic violence quite covers the contents of the book adequately so I'm all for putting the spoilers out there if it stops even one person being triggered by the dozen other triggering subjects in the book. I have a strong stomach and even I got to the point of saying that if that storyline continued then I wouldn't be finishing the book. Such a waste of what would have been a really good book. Thankfully I read it free as a pre release for review coz I'd hate to give anyone money for putting those warped images into the world
I have really enjoyed the authors previous books but fior me this was confusing, not sure if some things were lost in translation but I wasn’t always sure what was happening,as an author though he writes fascinating books and will look forward to the next one
Fitzek doesn’t shy from sensitive subjects and he takes on domestic violence in this very dark thriller. Jules works for a hotline known as Walk me Home, a service provided to women who are afraid to travel alone for fear of being attacked, by a stranger, or even worse, someone they know. The service provides a voice on the other end of the line so the caller doesn’t feel so alone. One night, Jules takes a call from Klara, who’s afraid she’s being followed by a man from her past, a man who wants to do her real harm. A man who has left her a promise in blood….Intense and visceral. Be prepared for a very dark read
Fitzek’s books are usually completely over-the-top, insanely bananas. His plots are not realistic and rely sometimes too much on coincidence. They are also way more entertaining than thrillers have any right to be. Written during a dark period of our recent history that shall remain unnamed, Walk Me Home is pure adrenaline. Jules and Klara’s lives collide one night when Klara is being threatened and calls Jules at the victim support phone line where he volunteers. Both go down the rabbit hole into the most twisted situations. Not for the faint of heart, I was going to say that the story keeps getting progressively darker, but it isn’t. It starts in a very twisted place and keeps throwing shocker after shocker. I won’t go into the plot, because the less you know about it, the more surprising it will be. This read won’t be pleasant but it’s impossible to put down.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Aria & Aries, Head of Zeus!
I'm a big fan of Fitzek and I genuinely think that was his best yet. Very creepy but I just couldn't put it down
Walk Me Home is full of suspense and twists all the way to the end. This was the first book in a while that kept me guessing until the very end. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out everything.
The prologue started the book off with a bang and instantly hooked my attention. I knew after reading the prologue that I was going to like this book.

I am a bit confused about Jules’ POV. Throughout the book he would talk about the intruder and make it sound like his own home and child even when he wasn’t talking to someone and we were getting his internal dialogue and thoughts. So when he was outed as the bad guy, I was confused why his POV hid all of that. This was the only reason it went down a star for me.
