This is a simple and sweet Puerto Rican reimagining of While You Were Sleeping, one of my favorite rom-com movies. I enjoyed the multicultural influences and light-hearted holiday vibes. As long as you're in the right mood for some flappy (though harmless) plot contrivances, you should be in for a charmed afternoon.

I was immediately drawn to this one – adorable cover art, holiday romance, and most exciting of all for me – a retelling / twist on the classic holiday 90s romcom movie While You Were Sleeping. Yes please! I could not wait to dive in – I was so excited and nervous for this one, While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorite holiday romcoms from when I was a kid – and still a go to pick me up movie. I had high hopes and I’m so happy to say that this book definitely delivered!

The story kept true to the overall feel and premise of While You Were Sleeping, it gave me the feel good, sweet holiday rom com vibes I was looking for. I loved Katie – she was sweet and definitely gave Sandy B vibes as a romcom heroine vibes. I really liked the addition of some Puerto Rican culture and traditions with the Martinez family (brothers / leading men Juan and Mateo’s family). The family was fun, energetic and had some great personalities. I loved getting to know them all and I was a sucker for the chemistry between Katie and Mateo.

My one nitpick would probably be around the epilogue (and is definitely just a personal preference), I was happy to get a glimpse of Katie’s HEA. However, I really didn’t feel the need for the Adelita or other additional character that was tossed in. Overall, this was an easy binge read, I really enjoyed seeing the story unfold – heartwarming and fun, this one was such an entertaining holiday read.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read an early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and freely offered.

I thought with the cover and the premise of brother attraction, the book would feel more like a light rom-com, but the writing actually felt really heavy. I wasn’t in the mood to continue (not what I’m looking for in a Christmas romance) and stopped after chapter 3 (11%).

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC.

This was a fun twist on While You Were Sleeping set in a small California town. I loved the setting of the winery and it almost felt like another character in the story. This felt like the perfect small town Christmas romance and if you love Hallmark holiday movies this book is for you. I liked this book it was a quick read with likable main characters and fun side characters and would definitely recommend it for a holiday read. I want to thank NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review.

You had me at While You Were Sleeping.

While You Were Sleeping meets The Wedding Date with a fun twist in Ginny Baird’s latest romance.

Katie Smith is a lonely waitress with nowhere to go for Christmas, and a huge crush on her gorgeous diner patron Juan Martinez. Katie jumps at the chance to spend Christmas at Juan’s family’s winery, when he asks her to pose as his girlfriend for the holiday festivities. Katie is looking forward to the festivities until an accident lands Juan in a coma after giving his folks the news. Katie knows she should tell the Martinezes the truth, but she’s reluctant to let go of her dream of a family holiday. Then, there’s Mateo, Juan’s brother, who tugs at Katie’s heart and the warmth of the Martinez family who have embraced Katie.

With the winery in jeopardy and secrets on all sides, can Katie and Mateo follow their hearts for a Christmas miracle?

The plot is easily recognizable but with its own unique storyline. The Martinez family was fantastic and loved the interaction between the characters. Such a fun read and kept me engaged to the end.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the eARC I received in exchange for my honest opinion.

My review will be posted to Goodreads, BookBub and Amazon on publication day.

The Holiday Mix-Up – felt the “While You Were Sleeping” vibe, which is one of my favorite movies so this book was a great “holiday” escape for me. While the plot isn’t unique, it kept me engaged, and I enjoyed the characters. I mean who wouldn’t want to be Katie Smith in this story. After reading this, I will definitely be reading more Ginny Baird in the future.

The Holiday Mix-Up. The blurb calls this story a little bit “While You Were Sleeping” and a little bit like “The Wedding Date.” This reviewer would add a little bit of “A Walk in the Clouds” because of the vineyard setting to the mix. While the basic plot is familiar to any viewer of those movies, in Ginny Beard’s capable hands the story becomes fresh as Katie, asked to be one brother’s fake date to Christmas dinner finds herself immensely attracted to the other brother. I loved the interaction between the characters as the large family struggles to get to know an outsider as the brother she’s supposed to be involved with lies unconscious in the hospital. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. Highly recommend.

While You Were Sleeping meets The Wedding Date with a puerto Rican holiday twist! When lonely waitress Katie Smith is asked to be her patron crush, Juan's fake girlfriend for Christmas she can't help but say yes... unfortunately immediately afterwards he is hit by a car and put into a coma and when Katie saves him and goes with him to the hospital his family mistakenly thinks she is his girlfriend because he had sent them a text saying she was. Not knowing what to do and kind of in the spot, Katie just goes along with it but then she meets Juan's brother Mateo. Mateo is the brother who is beginning to steal Katie's heart and she's starting to think that she fell for the wrong brother all along... yet when the truth comes out will she be able to save this blooming relationship? Or will the mix up break all their hearts. It's going to take a Christmas miracle to work out this complicated web. This was definitely true to the tag line of what the story would be similar to. Katie is in a bit of a pickle and normally any normal person would just admit who they really were to clear up any kind of misinformation and the fact that this is a Christmas romance does give it more leeway with the fact that this entire story takes place in a week for them to fall in love. Overall if you like Christmas romances with a hallmark feel definitely give this one a go!
