I really enjoyed this book! It has me in its grip from the first chapter, and had some surprising twists. Like the opening line suggests, it really is about class, ambition, and family. Would highly recommend if you want a light thriller for the fall. It also takes place in Boston which was a great setting IMO.
DNF at 20% I unfortunately found this both boring and unrealistic. a shame because I've liked this author in the past.
The intern held my interest the entire time! I was kept interested by the numerous cliffhangers that occurred throughout every chapter ending!! Each scene felt like a load of information was given - in a good way! Shoutout a a puertorican character!! First read that has incorporated my people’s!! 🤍
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
This book was a wild ride. It follows Madison Rivera, a Harvard Law student, and Kathryn Conroy, a judge who is also a Harvard alumna, as they get tied up in espionage, corruption, drugs, and murder. Everything about this book seemed like something I would enjoy. It is a dual POV with both of the main characters being female. However, and this could very well be a personal problem, having gone to law school and focusing on criminal law made it so difficult for me to pull myself out of this book to overlook glaring errors. This book is a fun time, the same way watching police procedurals is a fun time. It was suspenseful. It was thrilling. It was everything I wanted it to be. It was just also inaccurate to the legal system in enough ways that I couldn't fully suspend my disbelief. Which is wild considering she has a background in the law! Maybe it's just me - maybe I didn't get the memo about all of the corruption where I was working. Regardless, it's a me issue with being unable to suspend belief. I still recommended this book to so many people, and I fully intend to read it again. I currently have my retired judge grandfather, as well as a few lawyer aunts and uncles, reading this & fully intend to have a family discussion over this book. 3.5/5
I read tend to enjoy Michele Campbell’s books. She’s a lawyer and smart, so it’s so fun to dive into her thrilling novels. What I really loved about The Intern was how compelling I found the story to be. I could really feel Madison’s tension and anxiety as she went into her interview with Judge Conroy ready to tell the truth about her brother, but instead delved into a series of lies.
I found bits of the story entirely unrealistic and most of those are deep spoilers I don’t want to dive into in this review. But I will say the entire arrangement between Madison and Kathryn seemed unlikely to happen. I mean, maybe it could? It just seemed to cross so many boundaries between a student and professor. I guess weirder things have happened in real life.
As the story went on, I really sympathized with Kathryn’s situation. It was horribly sad. But it also seemed so off-the-wall to me.
A slight spoiler: I was glad to see how things ended with the cat. It left me feeling satisfied with the ending overall.
This tangled web of secrets and corruption was a great read! I was captivated as this character driven legal thriller slowly unwound. I finished this one in a day.
Madison Rivera has just secured an internship with the renowned Judge Kathryn Conroy. However, she soon realizes that Judge Conroy is the same judge presiding over her brother Danny's case. Madison is now faced with a dilemma - should she reveal the truth to the judge and risk losing the internship opportunity of a lifetime, or keep it a secret in the hope that Judge Conroy might be able to help her brother's case? But things take a sudden turn when Danny disappears from prison, and Judge Conroy is accused of corruption. What will Madison do?
A fast-paced thriller that delves into the complex and murky world of the justice system. It explored the themes of deception, corruption, and abuse of power. While Intern is an engaging book overall, I believe that Madison's character could benefit from further development compared to the well-crafted character of Judge Conroy. Madison, as a protagonist, has the potential to be a compelling and complex character, but her portrayal in the novel feels somewhat superficial. There are glimpses of her inner struggles and motivations, but they are not fully explored or fleshed out when compared to Jude Conroy.
All in all, an entertaining read. Perfect for fans of legal thrillers.
It started off so strong but then the author just kept adding more characters and random things about the characters it was just an overwhelming amount of information. In the beginning there were so many things I wanted to know and find out but then I just got so confused and all I wanted to do was finish.
A great novel that will have you hooked until the very end. I would definitely recommend this novel.
Michele Campbell has outdone herself with The Intern. The characters are honed to perfection. Perfectly paced, the alternating narratives add depth to the plot. Twists and turns have the reader second guessing both pawns and players. The setting reflects Campbell's comfort in all things Harvard Law without belaboring detail. A great read from the first page to the satisfying end, Campbell weaves a compelling story and ties off all of the loose ends. I simply loved The Intern.
Ohh a legal thriller!! The plot of this is just alright but the concept is great. I’d like to see more legal thrillers!!
I usually do not love thriller books however I really enjoyed this book. It was a complicated case where family, work and ethics mold into one. I found that the ending was not expected and felt I could stay engaged for the entire book.
Ambitious Harvard Law Student’s Internship Thriller
The Intern by Michele Campbell is a psychological thriller that centers on Madison Rivera, a driven Harvard law student who secures an internship with the esteemed Judge Kathryn Conroy. The story takes a chilling turn as Madison discovers that Conroy, who appears charismatic and successful, harbours dark secrets that pull Madison into a dangerous game of deceit and ambition. Unbeknownst to Madison, her past and secrets intertwine with those of the judge, creating a suspenseful narrative that explores themes of class, ambition, family, and murder.
The Intern is a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that offers a deep dive into the complexities of ambition and moral ambiguity. Michele Campbell's skillful storytelling and well-drawn characters make it a standout in the genre. The book's strengths lie in its intricate plot and the psychological depth of its main characters. However, its predictability in some aspects may be a slight drawback for avid thriller readers. Overall, it is a highly recommended read for fans of psychological thrillers and legal dramas.
In Intern was a fast paced and suspenseful legal thriller. I thought these were complex characters and the premise was readable and enjoyable even if you don't have a legal background. The writing was engaging to the end, and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys thrillers with strong female leads and intricate plots.
Thank you St. Martin's Press for the copy through NetGalley in exchange for a review.
Loved this thriller, the dual POVs, and the two female MCs. I did feel that there wasn't a major twist and I was left a bit wanting.
The Intern by Michele Campbell is a thrilling ride! 😍🔥 It’s packed with drama, secrets, and twists as an intern uncovers dark, hidden truths in the office. If you love suspenseful stories with jaw-dropping reveals, this one’s a must-read.
This a page turner!! Madison Rivera, an intelligent and ambitious legal student, lands a much sought after internship with the celebrated Judge Kathryn Conroy. They formally sort of bond because of their similar backgrounds. Things are complicated for Madison because her brother has gotten into trouble and Judge Conroy is the judge in his case. Also her brother tells her that the judge is corrupt and then he goes missing! Madison decides to investigate. This is where it gets very twisty! Someone tries to kill her but why? Can she trust the judge or is she really a master criminal? Will she survive this internship or lose her career altogether? You won’t be able to put it down!
This has been a favorite author of mine for many years!! She has a great series under the name Michele Martinez!
I received an advanced review copy and the opinions in this review are mine alone.
4/5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers, and Michele Campbell for allowing me to read and review this book.
We follow our main character, a young Harvard law student, who gets an internship with a judge she has looked up to since she was a child. However, both women have secrets that could destroy them.
Madison has a younger brother who has been arrested, and Judge Conroy is the judge on his case. She lies to the judge about being an only child, hoping to keep him a secret. This plan goes bad when her brother goes missing after accusing the judge, his lawyer, and the cop that arrested him of corruption. Madison dives deep into the judge's personal life and background trying to find and save her brother. However, the judge has some dangerous secrets of her own. Neither woman knows if they can trust the other one, or if one of them will betray the other and cause one of them to get killed.
We go back and forth between the two women's perspectives, the past and the present. We learn more about the judge's background while also trying to figure out who is trying to kill her know. A lot is going on in this book, there are a lot of dots to connect, but everything does connect in some way or another. This book is easy to follow, but it will have you wondering what will happen next all the way until the very last page.
THRILLING. What a ride. I rooted for the main character (who was so well written). This was one of her best yet! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher

Thank you to Netgalley & the publisher for an early copy (Yes, I know this has been released in the world for a while now) in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this one! Easily one book that I will probably think about regularly.
The plot of this story was a fun one that had a lot of twists and turns. The entire time it had me wondering what was real, who was telling the truth, and who was bad vs. good. I loved the legal aspect to it since the main female character is a Judge. I thought that was an interesting concept and not one that I have seen a lot of before!
The story is split into 5 different parts and each part is other the POV of Madison or of Judge Kathryn Conroy. Each character had a unique back story, especially Kathryn. As Madison was piecing things together, so was I, because I didn’t see most of the twists coming. A few times I audibly gasped or said “what?!” In my car and had to rewind to make sure that what I listened to was correct. The narrator did an excellent job changing her voice for different characters and just her narration overall.
I read a book by this author many years ago and enjoyed it. This is definitely an author I’d like to read more from!
