The Intern
Genre: legal thriller
Rating: 4.25⭐/ Loved!

Thanks @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advanced digital copy. This book is out now (and was a @bookofthemonth pick last month!)

Quick synopsis: The story follows Kathryn, a prominent judge and Harvard professor, and Madison, a law student at Harvard and the judge’s intern. Madison has always admired the judge but when the arrest of her brother and case against him seems questionable, she is shocked to see her professor as the presiding judge on the case. She starts digging and is shocked by what she uncovers.

I loved this story. It was impossible to put down, with a dual POV that was really well done, with a ton of fun twists. I was able to mostly look past the fact that a lot was not really believable but I did bump my rating down a fraction just because of that. The ending was wrapped up nicely and felt satisfying to read. Overall, the perfect thriller for any reader looking to get sucked into a story and is able to look a bit past reality to enjoy the ride.

This is a great legal thriller! Super well written and full of suspense and plot twists to keep the reader engaged from start to finish

Madison looks up to Katherine. She’s a federal judge and Madison aspires to be just like her. She can’t believe her luck when she is offered a position in her internship and even more excited as it seems the judge is trying to befriend her.. but are her intentions pure?

Katherine’s life has been anything but perfect. She’s lived a life of loss and betrayal, some of which she’s caused. But she wants out. And she will do anything to make it happen

Told in alternating POV from Madison and Katherine, this thriller is high energy and a quick page-turner

This was a wild read & had me on my toes the entire time. It went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and I loved it. The twists were beautiful and hit at the perfect times, & the legal angle was fantastic: it wasn’t overbearing or hard to follow or full of jargon… it just worked wonderfully into the story.

Only negatives were that sometimes it got repetitive, some of the characters were unbearable, and the ending tied up way too “pretty” for me, but that’s just a personal preference. It was still a great story.

Would definitely recommend! I can easily see this being turned into a movie someday!

When Madison Rivera applied to this coveted internship, what she got was not at all what she expected.

I liked that our two main characters were both women who built their careers from nothing, even though they had secrets to hide. The judge was a particularly interesting character because she was certainly flawed. I couldn't wait to find out whether one of them was an unreliable narrator or if something else was at play.

I do wish we got a bit more about Madison's background. Since the author went into way more depth with the judge's background, Madison felt like a bit of a pawn throughout most of the book. Kathryn's development was so well done that it felt a bit unbalanced.

The ending is one you don't want to miss. If you like legal thrillers, this one will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣 is about murder, lying, and scandal. The book started off slowly for me, but it did pick up after about 75 pages. The story is told from both Madison and Judge Conroy's point of view, in both past and present day, which I really liked. Both women appear to be smart but are afflicted by impulsivity and bad choices. Although there were too many characters to keep track of, the lies, corruption and mob-like feel keep me reading. Give this one a try and see what you think.

This legal thriller “lite” certainly kept me entertained while reading! There’s lots of action and lots of plot twists to keep you engaged. Are there a plethora of over the top characters? Yes, but if you can suspend disbelief for a bit you’ll find this legal thriller to be filled with surprises and a satisfying ending.

I love legal thrillers but I’m always reading them with a jaded eye. Not to worry, this story of a Federal judge and the Harvard Law student who becomes her legal intern ticked all the boxes while still managing to be pleasantly diverting. There’s a game of cat and mouse, family drama and lots of untrustworthy characters. I really liked the multiple points of view and just when I thought I knew what was happening, there was a plot twist! If you need a fast-paced, twisty thriller, you’ll like this one!

Madison Rivera secures a coveted internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy, unaware that her troubled younger brother Danny is embroiled in a case overseen by the same judge. When Danny disappears after accusing Conroy of corruption, Madison delves into the judge's enigmatic world, grappling with questions about Conroy's true nature. Is she a mentor, victim, or criminal? Is her interest in Madison genuine or manipulative? As a shadowy threat looms, a perilous cat-and-mouse dynamic unfolds between the two women, testing their loyalties. In this high-stakes tale, survival hangs in the balance, and betrayal could be deadly.

The Intern is a wild ride. Told in alternating third-person perspectives between Madison and Kathryn, it explores corruption in the legal system. While the subject matter wasn’t my favorite, I found myself clinging to the page as the story unraveled. With numerous twists and turns, I had no idea who to trust. The ending had me stunned but was satisfying and wrapped up neatly.

If you like legal and cat-and-mouse thrillers, this one’s for you! Thank you to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Super fast paced which means I read it really quickly, dual POV. Both characters have secrets, but it wasn't anything special or no super big twist though it made for a fun in between read.

I really enjoyed this read! It had a unique feel to it and I loved all the twists. I thought the manipulation with all the characters made this book difficult to put down.

Michele Campbell does it again. I love a good crime thriller. The two main characters lives remain parallel for so many year, when they converge everything pops off.

A legal thriller with many twists, turns, unreliable narrators, and shady characters, Michele Campbell’s latest novel is a complex thriller of a book. Following ambitious Harvard Law student Madison as she takes a class and an internship with her idol Judge Kathryn Conroy, Madison finds that there is a lot of history and trauma attached to her new internship and that her idol, professor, and boss is not entirely who she seems to be. This novel is heavily character-driven, with a host of dynamic, complex characters filling the pages, and Madison and Judge Conroy in particular dominate the pages and the reader’s attention. Conroy draws attention to their many similarities, and readers will also find themselves enthralled by the two perspectives and the complexities of both characters’ motivations, relationships, and lives. This book is fantastic for those readers who want strong female leads and a darkly complex thriller (with a dash of legalese and courthouse drama), and Campbell certainly delivers on all fronts. A book like The Intern will draw readers in and hold them for the entirety of the book, and readers will lose themselves in the high stakes and emotional tensions of Madison, Judge Conroy, and the rest of the novel’s cast.

I really enjoyed this! 3.75 stars.

The beginning started quite slow and a little underwhelming. I wasn’t sure where it was going to go and it wasn’t keeping my attention. But 2/3 of the way, it picked up. Lots of themes, drama, complex characters, and decisions. I do think there could have been more of a character development. It seemed to go from black to white. But I’m the end, I would recommend this!

The intern is a fast paced thriller that will keep you interested from the first chapter.

Madison is a law intern working with the judge Kathryn. They both have very dark and dangerous secrets.

Madison's brother is in trouble. Can the judge help her?

Okay this cover immediately grabbed me and I was totally invested as soon as I read the synopsis. I loved the connection between a law student and her finding out about potential corruption and trying to get to the bottom of it without putting herself in trouble. As someone who’s husband went through law school and being with him throughout his journey, I really appreciated the authors authenticity to the book and it definitely seemed like they did their research on what law students go through during school. I loved how fast paced this book was and it just kept me wanting more and more. I loved the dual POV of Kathryn and Madison because I feel like it just helped the reader understand everything that was going on through both sides. Overall, this is definitely one that kept my interest and I enjoyed reading! Definitely one I would recommend!

I hadn’t read a mob related legal thriller in a while. This one was a fun way to get back into that trope.

Madison’s loyalty to her troubled brother has her putting her own law degree at risk to protect him. An internship with her law professor/judge, proves to be more than she bargained for, as her professor is hiding so much about her life and career.

Cover ups, corruption, and plans of escape, this book employed all of this to hold my interest. I love it when a plan comes together! Good read!

This book was just too slow for me. I found myself not caring about the mystery and any of the characters.

This is the kind of high-adrenaline page-turner that captures you from the opening chapter and doesn’t let go. I felt breathless cover to cover, captivated by the characters, the intrigue, the suspense, and the mystery. So enjoyed it.

Madison Rivera is in law school and is ecstatic about landing an internship working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. The only problem is Kathryn Conroy is the judge on her brother Danny's case. Danny has gotten into some deep trouble and all of a sudden goes missing. Is Judge Kathryn Conroy someone that can help her or someone she can't trust?

I had put the audiobook on hold and when it became available, I tried it out and immediately got sucked in. I alternated between reading the book and listening to the audiobook and recommend reading the book both ways. We also get to hear both Kathryn and Madison's point of view throughout the story, both strong female leads.

This is a fast-paced legal thriller that will immediately pull you out of a reading slump! I will definitely be checking out more of Michele Campbell's books in the future.

The Intern was a wild ride of a legal thriller. The characters, the way the plot developed, the twists, all of it had me hooked. I felt as though I flew through this one. Though I guessed a few of the twists I did not see the end coming. The dual time lines and the character development were quite enthralling but I was a little let down by the ending as I felt as though I was left wanting more. I could absolutely see this being made into a TV mini series or movie.

The Intern is a page turning nail biter with a mysterious cat and mouse plotline in which the reader has no idea who the actual protagonist is. The story is expertly crafted and clever as all of Campbell’s books are and filled with shocks and suprises.

Harvard Law student Madison Rivera has worked hard to achieve her goals. Having come from a dysfunctional, poor family with her brother facing prison time for drug charges, all she really wants is to help save him and give her mother the peace she deserves.

So, when one of her professors, a highly respected judge who Madison has looked up to for years, Judge Kathryn Connoy asks her to intern in her law office as a law clerk because she suddenly has an opening, she jumps at the chance. But quickly, Madison discovers there could be a problem. The judge is overseeing her brother’s court case. And her brother insists he’s being framed and the judge in the case is in on it. So, Madison must make a decision and decides to lie to the judge and tell her she is an only child so she can truly investigate the claims.

But they are both keeping secrets. Kathryn has not told Madison that she is being manipulated by a mob because of the information she has about a murder many years ago. Kathryn’s well-connected family will not let her go and threaten her constantly.

As Madison discovers some of the judge’s secrets, she unfortunately becomes a target in this who should we believe thriller which is part murder mystery and part suspenseful crime story.

With both of them holding back from each other, and the FBI breathing down Kathryn’s back and goons trying to manipulate Madison, the stakes are even higher. And then Madison discovers Kathryn’s last secret.

Now they have to trust each other or die together! What has Madison gotten herself into?

The Intern will have you on the edge of your seat, questioning everything you are learning and every character you are meeting. What a ride!
