Thank you Netgalley & publisher for this e-arc of The Intern by Michele Campbell.
This is a thriller-mystery novel. 3.5*; one unique aspect was this was a legal thriller with a judge and student MC's.
Synopsis: "A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.
Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case.
When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her?
As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?."
Things I liked:
1. Genre
2. Law student/judge Mc's and dynamic
3. Not knowing what was going on
Things I disliked (if you can call it that):
1. Pace
2. I like more thriller and less mystery in my reads
3. I would like more details at the end
Type of read: Thriller, Mystery, Fiction, Suspense, Legal Thriller, Contemporary
The authors' background makes her perfect for this type of novel.
I've enjoyed a few of this author's books. This one is right up there with those. Once I started it and didn't want to put it down. It's a page turner. A legal thriller but not in the courtroom. Behind the scenes.
Madison Rivera is a very smart Harvard Law School student. She's always on top of everything. Smart and willing to work hard. When her professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy, asks her to apply for an internship she's over the moon excited. She has always idolized Judge Conroy. Ever since she saw her give a speech at the Catholic school they both attended. Madison decided then that she wanted nothing more than to be a lawyer.
Madison applies and gets the internship but is concerned because of the trouble her bother is in jail for. Also the fact that Judge Kathryn Conroy was the judge in Danny's case. His lawyer it seems is crooked as were some of the cops involved. Danny is in some very serious trouble but Madison kept it from the Judge when she applied for the internship.
Just when it seems she might get a chance to tell Kathryn about Danny, Madison is asked to house/cat sit for Kathryn. Something happens that causes Madison to rethink a lot of things. Is Kathryn really such a good judge or is she bought by someone. Does she possibly know who Madison is, or who her brother is. What is going on here.
This story is told from each of these women's POVs and goes back to when Kathryn was a small child. You get a good look into how Kathryn became who she is now and why. Also how Madison became who she is. You'll get to know each of these women. I rooted for them both even though knowing some of the things I know. Well read. I liked them both. Some of the back characters I didn't care for at all. But they all played a huge part in this explosive book about an Intern...
Thank you #NetGalley, #MicheleCampbell, #StMartinsPress for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
Five big stars and a very high recommendation.
This book will make you think of who you will hire as your intern and make you double check again and again! What a great book! Addicted from page 1!
Michele Campbell’s The Intern features two strong women in a game of cat and mouse that will leave you breathless as they face off against each other. Madison has admired Judge Katherine Conroy since seeing her talk at her school. Following in Conroy’s footsteps, she is now a student at Harvard Law School. She is even thrilled to be taking a class taught by Conroy. Offered an internship at Conroy’s law firm, she is afraid that she will lose the opportunity if they find out that her brother was arrested on rug charges. Danny swore he was innocent, yet pleaded guilty. On a visit to the prison, he warns her not to try and help him. He was set up by a crooked cop, his lawyer knew the arresting officer and the judge was working with them. That judge was Conroy. As Madison works for her she is determined to look into Danny’s case. When Madison is caught in a lie on her application, Conroy uses it to her advantage and begins making demands on her that could implicate her in illegal actions. Madison is suddenly being followed and there are threats against her life.
Is Conroy the corrupt judge that Madison suspects? Campbell paints the picture of a child whose Uncle Ray helped support her, paid for her education and paved the way for her appointment to her position. Ray was connected to organized crime and his generosity had to be repaid under the threat of death. Her relationship with Madison could either help her achieve freedom or find one of them dead. Fans of legal thrillers will find this impossible to put down. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press o providing this book or my review.
A young Harvard law student falls for an internship with a judge that leads her into troubled waters. The book has love, murder, and family issues. One of these ladies get in serious trouble and bo6 are trying to protect each other. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat. A really good read.
The Intern by Michelle Campbell was a bingeable thriller because you are trying to figure out what exactly is happening. If you like legal thrillers with a bit of cat and mouse, then you should read this book! This is my first book by her, but not my last.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Madison is excited to be selected to be an intern in the office of Kathryn, a judge she has idolized for years. Judge Kathryn inspired Madison to pursue a career in law, but she soon wonders if this placement is cursed. Madison finds a link between the judge & her incarcerated brother. She is also invited to house sit and care for the judge’s cat while she’s away. A strange visitor while house sitting leaves Madison with a mounting heap of questions. What should have been an influential internship becomes a race to survive. If she can figure out who to trust she just might save her life. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC. This is my honest review.
The Intern by Michele Campbell was a fun read! I feel like this was a different pace from other legal thrillers that I have read and it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
Madison Rivera is a law student at Harvard who has an opportunity to intern for her idol, Judge Kathryn Conroy. At the same time, Madison's brother, Danny, is arrested and forced to plead guilty in a capital drug case which is being overseen by none other than, Judge Conroy. Now torn between supporting her brother and pursuing her dream career, Madison needs to tread carefully. But there are deeper conspiracies at play here, and soon Madison finds herself in deep with people who are willing to go to great lengths to keep their operations running smoothly.
The Intern definitely had me second guessing everything and trusting no one. A quick read that is well worth it.
This book was so good and twisty. There were so many huge reveals, secrets, betrayals and holy-crap moments. I finished this pretty quickly because I wanted to know what happened to Madison and her brother. This book was certainly not boring or predictable. I sincerely hope Michele Campbell writes more books as good as this one because I definitely recommend this one.
Surprised how much I liked this book and sooooo glad none of it was predictable, Recommended!

I danced between 3 and 4 stars for this one but landed on 4 since it ended up being fun and fast paced after I got into it. Some of Madison's decisions and certain plot points made me roll my eyes, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Madison Rivera is a young law student at Harvard. Her legal aspirations began years ago after attending a talk by Judge Kathryn Conroy. So she's excited when her longtime role model and mentor encourages her to apply to her internship. There's only one problem, Madison's brother is in deep legal trouble and Judge Conroy is assigned to his case. As Madison gets closer to the judge she starts to suspect there's more to her than meets the eye and before she knows it she's in too deep to change her mind. Will this internship lead Madison to her dream career? Or will she end up losing everything?

Thank You NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Michele Campbell for an eArc of The Intern. This was the first book I read by this author and it won’t be my last. In this book, law student Madison Rivera hopes to be chosen as the new Intern for her law professor and Judge Kathryn Conroy. Once she begins her Internship, Madison’s and Kathryn’s secrets, past and present, are revealed despite their attempts to keep them hidden. Both Madison and Kathryn seek the truth and freedom and are willing to take big risks to find it. As they learn about each other’s stories, you keep wondering, who can you trust and what can you believe? So many twists and turns, a page turner till the end!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m excited to participate in the review tour for ‘The Intern’ by Michele Campbell! Thank you @booksparks for the advanced copy. This book will be available on October 3!
A young Harvard law student, Madison Rivera, falls under the spell of the charismatic Judge Kathryn Conroy… Who wouldn’t? She is a powerful, glamorous, and prestigious judge from an Ivy League school. But when Madison’s brother is arrested and claims innocence, she applies for an internship with the judge handling his case. Turns out Judge Conroy has a pocket full of secrets (not sunshine) and they involve bad cops, dirty money, and lots of scandal!!!
This is my third @MicheleCampbellbooks book and boy does she know how to write about crime! I’m sure her working as a federal prosecutor has been very beneficial to her writing novels. She makes wildly unbelievable stories sound legit!
BUT my least favorite character was Madison’s mom. GEE let’s make your daughter feel MORE guilty. Anyway… 🙄
Shout out to my Farmers Market flowers and 110+ degree weather! They’re a bit droopy now.
What’s the weather like where you are? Are you under this heat dome too?
🖤🖤🖤
Super fast paced thriller. I enjoyed the different pov throughout the book.
I found it to be different than other thrillers and it kept me reading/listening the whole time.
I also had this on audio and really enjoyed it as well.
This book was captivating from start to finish. I was rooting for the characters, despite not trusting them. It was not always as fast-paced as I prefer, but I still continued to turn the pages wanting more. There was interesting character development and I enjoyed diving deeper into their secrets.
3.5 stars
Madison, a Harvard law student gets an internship with one of her professors is also a judge. Both have their own secrets.
I didn’t find this one that suspenseful but I there was just something about it that made me want to keep reading. It was fast paced and everyone was untrustworthy. The story was told via Madison and the Judge, both characters were dynamic and interesting. It wasn’t a court room thriller but more of a cat and mouse game between the two women. I felt it was an entertaining read!
The Intern is a fast-paced thriller set in the cutthroat upper echelons of legal society, exploring dynamics of power and just how far two women are willing to go to protect their families, their secrets, and their careers.
The book is a page-turner full of narrative twists--not factual twists, as most characters' identities and motives are clear, but narrative twists, spinning the story out in unexpected directions based on characters' choices. This is in part because it keeps its central cast so small, alternating between Madison and Kathryn's perspectives, with only a handful of other characters explored in any level of detail. Both Madison and Kathryn are smart, ambitious women, with striking similarities in their upbringings that lead them to make similarly questionable decisions for the sake of protecting what they value--decisions that more-privileged individuals may not have felt compelled to make. The author mentioned in a note that one of her goals in writing this book was to look at the first-generation Latinx immigrant experience, and what happens when education opens a door for one child, but she can't take their family with her. While not a primary focus of the book, that theme lurked in the background of the story, adding some additional social heft to what could otherwise be just another legal thriller.
My biggest gripe with the book was how stilted and inorganic some of the dialogue felt. It pulled me out of the story, when the author articulated characters' internal monologues so naturally and yet made them speak in such an unusual way. This dialogue also meant that some dramatic scenes came across as cheesy, or negotiations quickly fizzled with people capitulating too easily. I also took issue with a very casual mention of suicidal ideation that was needlessly graphic and callous, but it was a single sentence, and I'm hoping maybe that line was softened or removed for the final edition.
If you want a page turner set in the heart of the judiciary (and written by an author who actually went to a top law school and clerked for a federal judge), even with its faults, this one is easy to pick up and hard to put down.
Trigger/content warnings: murder, suicidal ideation, organized crime, stalking, blackmail, mention of Harry Potter
Thank you to Booksparks and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.
I did not know what I was getting into with this book. It seemed like it would be a simple and pretty basic thriller, but I think the legal aspect made it so much more complex! I found myself really getting involved with all the intricacies of the story.
I really liked the backstories for both the judge and the intern, although the judge’s background was much more developed and interesting.
The relationship between the judge and intern was my favorite, though. Although it was based on partial facts and partial lies, the two characters really seemed to work well together.
I’m not sure I bought the ending - and I don’t know how any of the characters would have, either, but it was a good way to end the story.
Madison should be excited she is an intern for Judge Catherine Conroy. Madison has a secret her secret will lead her to do things she isn’t supposed to do with the privileges she is given. Her brother Danny has a court case in front of Judge Conroy but accusations are made and her brother goes missing things only get murkier when it looks like the judge is getting friendly with Madison. Is the judge friend or foe this is a horrible review for an awesome book. I loved Madison‘s character and could totally identify with her and wanting to do the right thing but feeling pressure from her family and the love for her brother if you love great thrillers then you will definitely love the Book The Intern by Michelle Campbell it is certainly a twisty thriller that keeps on giving. I want to thank the publisher and net galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Madison Rivera is a student at Harvard Law. She has landed a much coveted internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy, a woman she has looked up to since she was a young girl. Her brother, Danny is under arrest on drug charges. He claims he is innocent and that Judge Conroy is corrupt. Madison is determined to help her brother and take the internship.
The internship proves to be a lot more complicated than Madison ever imagined and the deeper she gets into the Judges life the more dangerous things become for her.
The Intern is told from Madison and Kathryn's point of views. Their backgrounds are intriguing which engages you as a reader and keeps you turning the pages of this character driven story.
This book is full of suspense and you find yourself conflicted as the story unfolds. This is an excellent legal thriller with twists that will kee
great book and loved the mystery through out the book. I loved the characters and how they grew through all of their adventures. I enjoyed this book and this author and will check them out again add them to my reading pile.
