Madison Rivera seems to have everything; she’s a promising year-two legal student at Harvard and brilliant in the classroom. Behind the scenes is a different story. Her brother Danny is in trouble with the law, and their mother is sick with worry.
By a strange turn of events, Danny’s judge happens to be one of Madison’s professors. And strange event #2, Judge Conroy has just asked Madison to apply for an internship with her.
It turns into a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, with the judge using Madison for her own means and Madison wanting to stay on the judge’s good side. Can the judge be trusted, or will she also turn on Madison to save herself?
I did enjoy getting the judge’s story in alternating parts. Otherwise, I would not have had much sympathy or understanding of her character. All of the characters make mistakes, but that makes them seem like real people. Although, at times, I yelled at them!
I liked the Boston setting of this one. It bordered on over-the-top at the end, but I enjoyed the journey. The visit to the financial aid office at the very end takes the cake!
This book was a high stakes situation and I really enjoyed the ride. It was a little too convenient wrap up at the end - allegedly there was a much larger organization behind the key players in the book, but only the key players were dealt with in the end...someone somewhere would've caught up and gotten some sort of punishment. Overall, though, I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the story.
Another fast-paced and compelling read from Michele Campbell. This time she offers readers a legal drama where a young Harvard law student, Madison Rivera, is approached by one of her class professors, prestigious Judge Kathryn Conroy, to be her new intern. Something doesn't seem quite right about the offer to Madison, (why me?) but Conroy is the woman who inspired her to be a lawyer, and this opportunity will not only have huge impacts on her own career, but it could also help her fix a tough family situation as well. Madison accepts the job. She doesn't have a clue what she's getting herself into.
Kathryn Conroy has secret motives of her own for offering Madison the internship. Tangled up in something she hasn't been able to escape despite her many attempts, she hopes she can use Madison as a means to finally break free.
Can the two women work together to advance their own motives? How can you trust someone who has lied to you from your first meeting? Turns out, you can and will do a lot of things when your life or the lives of your family are at stake. Do they each come out alive?
This is an engaging suspense read with a quick pace. A good, entertaining read. 3.5* rounded up to 4 stars.

This was a good legal thriller. The Intern tells the story of Madison, a Harvard law student, who becomes Judge Kathryn Conroy’s newest intern. Things get messy when she realizes that her brother is arrested and charged for a crime he didn’t commit and Conroy is the judge on the case. Madison finds out that Judge Conroy is a little suspicious.. and so is the lawyer and cops on her brother’s case. Madison needs to help her brother .. but Judge Conroy also needs help, saving herself.

I am not the biggest fans of legal thrillers and I was skeptical when I started reading this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the ending and the twist.

This is a good book to cuddle up on the couch with for a weekend. Thank you to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! The Intern will be published on October 3, 2023.
This was a really interesting thriller that took several twists and turns. Some I suspected and some I didn’t suspect at all. I like the dual POV and how it broken into different parts based on the POV.
I did have a little trouble staying focused after reading Kathryn’s first POV (part 2), and I overall found her pov to be the more interesting one. Especially after learning so much of her backstory. And parts of it were a little convoluted and complicated.
But overall a highly interesting thriller that kept me wanting to find out more.
Absolutely loved this book! I love a workplace thriller and this was so well done. A great read for fans of THE BOYS CLUB or PLEASE JOIN US. Definitely recommend adding to your TBR.

Madison Rivera is a Harvard law student who lands a KILLER internship with her favourite Professor, Judge Kathryn Convoy. During her interview, Madison gets caught up in conversation and lies about not having any siblings. When in reality, she has a deep dark SECRET. Her younger brother Danny has been recently arrested for drug possession and Judge Conroy is the Judge on his case. Madison is nervous that the truth will surface at some point … and if it does, will the Judge help out her family?? Or is something else more sinister going on here?? Will Madison have to choose between her mentor AND her family??
This is my first book by Michele Campbell and I am excited to get my hands on her back list books! This fast paced legal thriller is an enjoyable mix of suspense, mob ties, dark academia, and police procedural! I loved the Harvard setting and all the twists and turns throughout! This is one hell of a cat and mouse story that you don’t want to miss out on! 👌🏼

Wow, what a powerfully mesmerizing legal thriller this turned out to be. This book captured my attention from the very first page until the very unique ending. Madison Rivera is studying to be a lawyer and one of her instructors is Judge Kathryn Conroy whom she idolizes. Kathryn suggests to Madison that she apply for an internship in her office which she does and she gets. Madison's brother Danny is framed for a drug charge and the judge that is in charge of his case is Kathryn. Lots of thrilling and strange things happened in this book which kept me on the edge of my seat. Both Madison and Kathryn came from similar backgrounds which also made this a very interesting read. If you love a great legal thriller, you will really enjoy this one.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this super exciting book that I really enjoyed.

If you enjoy character-driven legal thrillers, this one is for you! This was my second read by Campbell and I am definitely a fan. Her writing and plotting are outstanding and the cliffhangers she throws at you in this one… So good.
The Intern was an intensely captivating read. Everything was so well executed. The pacing, the dual POV, the development, and the many twists throughout that had me intensely turning the pages trying to solve the mystery.
What I enjoyed;

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
The Intern started slow for me and then picked up in a way I didn’t expect. While I assumed this story would be all about Madison, I was pleasantly surprised that we got the judges POV too. I loved that the dual POV answered questions that I had and I thought the twists and turns were really incredible. Some of the writing felt a little messy and the pacing was a little off for me personally but overall I enjoyed this book and loved the ending.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
4 stars
The writing was very informative, but if you don't like legal terms and dramas, this book is not for you. Madison, the law student/intern was a strong character. She was smart and loyal to her mentor Judge Conroy. Kathryn Conroy is a corrupt judge, forced to do illegal acts by her "family" in law enforcement.
Together Judge Conroy and Madison must find a way to free her brother Danny from prison. He was sent there by Judge Conroy under the instructions of her corrupt family. They must also find a way to free her from tgr influence of her murderous family.
As the two women learn to trust each other, they come up with a plan to free both Danny and Judge Conroy.
I think this is a solid mystery and I enjoyed it. It was interesting all the way through and the twists were well thought out.
Another great book by Michelle Campbell. All the way through you couldn't tell who was lying and who told the truth. This would make for a great movie !
If there's one thing Michele Campbell knows how to write- it's suspense.
Legal thrillers aren't something I'm drawn to often, but I requested The Intern on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying it.
Of the two, I had a slight preference for Madison's pov, but Kathryn's was just as compelling.
The twists weren't over the top, but well done- and the ending was (in my opinion) very satisfying.
The Intern is the first book I have read by Michele Campbell. In this story, set in Boston and the East Coast region, we are introduced to Madison, an ambitious law student attending Harvard Law, and the professor whom she greatly admires, Federal Judge Kathryn Conroy. When Judge Conroy offers Madison a coveted opportunity to intern in her chambers, Madison jumps at the chance. This thriller moves quickly as we discover that both Madison and the Judge each have their own secrets to hide, and where those secrets leads them.. The story offers alternating POVs from our two main characters, which gives us a deeper look into what has driven them to where and who they are today.
I was intrigued by the premise of this story. I appreciated that Campbell gives us a diverse set of characters and shows women in positions of power. As we move further into the story we begin to understand that their power is more complicated and compromised than we may have originally thought.
The character development in this book was a little spotty, and sometimes took away from the story. Many of the side characters were one-dimensional and portrayed in stereotypical ways. I did enjoy the characters of Madison and Kathryn. They were somewhat likable and each had a bit of an edge to them. I was surprised that two women who were obviously so book smart and street savvy, could also make some not very smart decisions and choices along the way. Nevertheless, I was rooting for each of them. There were parts of the story that seemed to abruptly jump through time, especially when we hear from Kathryn about her childhood and early adult years. The ending was satisfying but felt rushed. The Intern was suspenseful, with a twist or two that I wasn't suspecting, but still somewhat predictable.
If you enjoy legal thrillers, or are new to thrillers, The Intern, might be a good one to try.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for offering me an e-ARC of The Intern by Michele Campbell, in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this! Much more than I expected to. I’ve never really read a legal thriller like this one. I was completely invested in the characters and the plot. It goes very in-depth into both Madison’s and Kathy’s lives and their backgrounds and how they ended up where they are now. I loved watching these two women connect and intertwine throughout the story in different ways. This is a book about power, corruption, and the intricacies of the justice system. It also delves into complex family dynamics and the vulnerabilities of student life. It shows the dangers and realities of putting certain people that we admire onto a pedestal in our minds, particularly authority figures, and then the fallout of realizing they are only human too. The plot is harrowing and high-stakes. I was hooked the entire time. The audiobook is also well done and I thought the narrator did a great job of portraying the tone of the story and the voices of the characters. Highly recommend!
The Intern is a new thriller by Michele Campbell. Here’s the set-up: Madison is a young, smart Harvard law student trying to get on the good side of her professor who she idolizes, Judge Kathryn Conroy. She gets her dream internship with Judge Conroy and then things start to go sideways. Is the Judge really who she seems to be?
This one is best read going in blind. I love a good legal thriller and this one was entertaining with some good twists and surprises along the way. I read it last month and I admit all the details haven't stayed with me but overall it kept me interested.
Thank you @stmartinspress and @netgalley for the ebook. I enjoyed this one!
This is totally not the type of book I usually read, but I'm so glad I did! It's fast paced, and an easy binge. The legal aspect of this story is fascinating to me, as it's a world I know nothing about. Michele Campbell was a lawyer, so everything in that regard is expertly written.
Madison and Kathrvn are both badass women who are brilliant, imperfect, and are wrapped up in complicated, deep rooted family drama/difficult pasts. I found myself rooting for both of them.
As a Bostonian, I loved all the Boston landmarks mentioned - from Maddy's classes at Harvard to Kathryn's fancy Back Bay apartment, Fenway and the Citgo sign, riding the T, landing at Logan, and the skyline views at the federal courthouse.. I love reading about places I'm familiar with!
Plus this setting gave me huge "Boston
Crime Movie" vibes.
This legal thriller had layers upon layers of deception, blackmail, and twists.
Madison is a student in law school interning for Judge Kathryn Conroy. She idolizes Conroy, who is the reason she decided to go to law school in the first place. The one problem? Madison’s brother wars arrested on a drug charge, and he tells Madison that the cop, lawyer, and judge on his case were all dirty…and the judge is none other than Conroy. Little lies build up to bigger ones as we learn about Conroy’s background and follow what happens to Madison in the present day.
The character development was fantastic here, with both female characters being complex and three dimensional. Each woman agonizes over her decisions, weighing out the risks and benefits of every action they take.
The plot was very cat and mouse, with multiple characters and storylines going on. I listened to parts of this one and read part as an ebook and found the read to be easier to follow than the audio, simply due to the time jumps and multiple characters involved. I found it to be an interesting, slow burn of a read.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. I’d give this 3.5 rounding to 4.
When I started reading this, I thought it was going to be a boring legal thriller. I was so wrong! This book was so good and the character development was amazing. I read this in one day because I could not put it down.
Great plot amazing character! Michele Campbell will have you enjoying this. I always enjoy a good thriller
And this dos not disappoint
