Love her, love this book! Madison feels incredibly lucky to be asked to intern with her professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy when she attends Harvard Law School. But filling out the form is problematic as Madison's brother, Danny is in prison for "intent to sell heroin." But she is immediately drawn to the charismatic Kathryn who befriends her and even invites Madison to her home and trusts her to watch it and her cat when she is away. But there are forces beyond their control that are bigger than either of them imagined. It's a deftly-woven, convoluted plot that leaves you gasping for breath just when you believe you have it figured it out!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Woo hoo!! I just absolutely love this Author and how she writes! Such suspense!! You will want to clear your night for this book because you won't move until you finish!!
This was such an amazing read. I love a book that I can’t put down. I felt like it was a cat and mouse game and you couldn’t figure out who or what to trust.
4.5 stars rounded up 🌟 Wow, does Michele Campbell know how to write a thriller. “The Intern” follows two MCs Judge Kathryn and her new intern Madison. As this story develops, neither Kathryn or Madison’s life is really as it seems.
This book hooked me right from the first chapter and was full of twists, legal drama, and corruption! The dual POVs were well timed and the ongoing game of cat and mouse was so enthralling I didn’t want to put this one down.
The only downfall for me was there were maybe a few too many characters to keep track of and I found myself backtracking at times to keep them straight. Overall a SOLID legal / mob thriller I would definitely recommend.
Thank you goes out to NetGalley, St. Martins Press and Michele Campbell for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. 🖤

Michele Campbell is always a must request/must read on here for me! And for good reason. Her books are smart, twisty and totally addicting. In this book, Madison is law student who is struggling with family issues when she gets an amazing offer to be an intern for her professor Judge Kathy Conroy. But Madison has ulterior motives for wanting the job and Judge Conroy has some secrets of her own. Told from the two perspectives of Madison and Kathy, I love that we get to know each woman and the reasons they do what they do. Both women are interesting, strong and determined characters. This book was a fun, engaging read.
As an attorney, I have a special place in my heart for thrillers concerning the legal system. And while I sometimes find that authors glamorize the world of judges/attorneys/etc., Michele Campbell did a great job of making an arguably fantastical plot become believable. The Intern was the perfectly paced book, with snippets of backstory sprinkled in throughout -- the reader got JUST enough to explain something but need to keep reading to find out more. I also loved the settings throughout the book, all of which added another layer to the suspense. Overall, a must read for 2023!!
Michele Campbell has written plenty of excellent thrillers, and this one is no different. Madison, a Harvard law student, applies for an internship and gets it--but she has a secret. A deep, dark one, that could ruin everything. And of course, nothing goes as planned as she's thrust into a dark web of lies and secrets. She must try to save herself, her career, and keep her family safe.
This book was a RIDE. Told from the perspective of both Madison, a law student interning for a federal judge, and Kathryn, the federal judge. Madison deeply admires Judge Kathryn, and Judge Kathryn might have some dark secrets hidden up her sleeve. Things get really twisty once Madison realizes her brother is under arrest and Judge Kathryn is presiding over his case.
This was fantastic, I loved the dual narration between the two main characters. This balance kept me torn between loving and hating the judge and not knowing which was the "right" perspective to have. I found this to be fast paced and frequently had me on the edge of my seat wondering how certain characters were going to pull through some pretty tricky spots. This one was classified as a legal thriller, which it was, but not to the degree of a book like John Grisham would write. I enjoyed how the setting encompassed multiple backdrops of law school, law enforcement, and the backstage of the court room, without it being too much or too dense in these subject matters.
I don't know if it was just me, but Madison's mom annoyed the hell out of me. I'm sorry, but you cannot task your daughter with the (impossible) task of getting her brother out of jail AND then guilt trip her over it. Overall, this was a great thriller with a fast pace, and a neatly wrapped ending.
I could not wait any longer to read the new Michele Campbell and I'm so glad I didn't. Michele is the queen of of the "how are they ever going to get out of this mess?" in writing these days. I literally could not put this book down for the last 40%. Whatever chores there were, well they were just going to have to wait because I was absolutely hooked into this book. I don't know why I though it would be any different because this happens to me every single time I read one of Michele's books. The more I read, the more I enjoyed this. The plot is excellent, the characters rich and fleshed out and the anticipation factor of how this was all going to work out A+. I originally thought this was going to be a 4 start read but now that I have let this sit with me overnight I just know that I really enjoyed my reading experience with this book and when I keep thinking about a book like it's real life characters and their story I know this is a 5 star read for me.
If you were a fan of the shows The Shield or How to Get Away with Murder, this is the book for you. What starts our as a simple internship for a law student evolves into a tangled webs of corruption & duplicitousness. This story begs to ask the question, how far down the rabbit hole will you go to protect the ones you love?
This was my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be my last. This is a fast paced legal thriller centering around two main characters, a judge and an intern. Madison is a Harvard law student struggling to survive law school, pay her bills, and try to rise to the top. Yet her past keeps threatening to bring her down. As she’s nearing finals her mom calls her and begs her to help her brother who is in jail having legal problems again. Except this time when Madison goes to visit him he swears he is innocent and blames a corrupt lawyer and judge, who is none other than Madison’s professor whom she has admired for years. Madison works to get close to her, securing an internship with her, and that is when things start to get interesting. The book switches back and forth between Kathryn (the judge) and Madison (the interns) point of view taking the reader through a fast paced interesting thriller that keeps you guessing. The plot was so well thought out, and there were so many amazing connections and twists and turns that I did not see coming. A really well written and planned out story, with a satisfying ending. I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed the dual POVs of Madison and Kathryn and how their characters and their similarities meshed together. The circumstances surrounding the dark web they get caught in maintained so much tension and drove the twisted plotting. I would definitely recommend this book and I’ll look for more of this author’s titles.
A well written, easy, quick read. Lots of intrigue and twists. The Intern sheds interesting insights into the world and pressures of law school, and the potential for corruption to derail people working within the legal system. ….kinda makes you stop and wonder! I liked it.
Thank You to NetGalley, St Martin’s Press, and Michele Campbell for the opportunity to enjoy this ARC.
Madison, a Harvard law student, idolizes the charismatic Judge Katherine Conroy and has finally made it in to her circle. As Madison delves into the judge's alluring yet treacherous world, secrets emerge and nothing is as it seems. It was really fun to see this relationship between Madison and Kathy play out. I was on the edge of my seat, constantly questioning the true motives of the characters.
This book explores the fine line between trust and betrayal, and the lengths people are willing to go to protect themselves and their family. A wonderful legal thriller that will keep readers guessing until the final page.
Madison is a law student and lands a prestigious internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret and it could ruin her career before it starts. Her younger brother has been arrested, and Judge Conroy.
When Madison’s brother goes missing, Madison sets off to hunt him down. She ends up confiding in the judge, who tells her she can’t help. Madison can’t quite figure out if the judge is her mentor, her friend, or a victim herself, except she does know someone is trying to kill her. Will they be able to figure this cat and mouse game out before someone ends up dead.
This was such a wonderful legal thriller. It has some really entertaining twists that I didn’t see coming. My issue was with the plot pacing. It would go fast, then slow, then fast, then slow. SO it was uneven and I struggled with this. The writing was wonderful. The characters were great and I enjoyed getting to know them. I loved how the characters were morally grey in such realistic ways. This was one I didn’t want to put down but kept getting hunh up on the uneven pacing. I loved how the story was told from both Kathryn and Madison perspectives and that there weren’t too many side characters to figure out. They all worked nicely. I loved the ending so much. It perfectly tied things together and gave me all the feel-good feelings.
If you are looking for a legal thriller with fun mob ties, then check this one out.

This was…fine. It started off relatively strong but started to drag as it went on. By the time I was almost done, I was definitely ready for it to be over.
This was a fun one. It’s a game of cat
& mouse…spy versus spy…where no one knows who they can trust.
I really liked the main character Madison and how the story developed between Madison and Kathy.
I couldn’t imagine being stuck in a situation like Kathy or Madison. Each person had a different role to play to someone else…someone they’d do anything for and that, well…it complicates things.
This one wasn’t my fav by this author but it was still good. I just didn’t like the Harvard / Judge angle as much as I liked A Stranger On The Beach. I just liked that premise better. Total preference thing for me.
I def recommend this one.
DNF at 35 percent. I love legal thrillers so I was so excited to read this one. Unfortunately, the writing style just did not work for me. The dialogue felt cheesy and it seemed like it had too much going on and it made it confusing. There is also a weird amount of mentions of things like food delivery services and it just took me out of the story.
Thanks netgalley for a copy of THE INTERN.
I actually forgot how much I enjoy Michele Campbell's writing style, and The Intern did not disappoint. I love the main characters and found myself rooting for both of them. Totally kept me guessing who was the "bad guys". 5 stars.
I flew through this fast-paced legal thriller in just under 24 hours. This one clipped along at a nice pace, keeping me engaged as we alternated between Kathryn's past and Madison's future. There were many layers and players to navigate through, but Campbell did a wonderful of keeping everything clear and concise. The story was well constructed with plenty of twists and turns to keep me engaged and turning the pages quickly.
