The Intern definitely kept me on my toes. I enjoyed every twist and turn that Campbell wrote in this book.
Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for a review. I've read Michele Campbell's earlier works and was very excited to pick this one up. It did not disappoint!
Madison is a student at Harvard Law who gets more than she bargained for when she elects to join an internship for her role model Professor Kathryn Conroy. Conroy is very mysterious and aloof and it takes Madison some time to figure the professor out. I will say that as much as I enjoyed the fast pacing of the story, I did have a hard time figuring out the character of Kathryn Conroy. The book does dive into her backstory so you find out where she is coming from but I did find her character to be confusing and ultimately unlikeable. Maybe she was a little too aloof and icy? Madison is also struggling with the recent drug arrest of her brother who she presumes is innocent. Before long she finds out that the professor may be more involved than she initially thought. This one kept me guessing until the very end!
The Intern is a great legal thriller, it's fast paced and so suspenseful I was anxious the entire time. I refused to put it down until I finished, I freaking loved it. I work in the legal field so I was fascinated by the plot and the setting, including the characters; a Harvard law student and a Judge, brilliant!
The twists were placed ever so strategically so when a few were revealed, my jaw actually dropped.
Fingers crossed for a series adaptation, it would be pretty awesome!
Huge thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for a review.
DNF at 35%. I can't. The writing was too cheesy for me and both Kathryn and Madison annoyed me so much.
This book got off to a really great start and I really connected with both Madison and Kathryn but the ending felt very under-developed.
The best thing about this book was the depiction of the law student, Madison, and how her rose-tinted view of the legal system is shattered. The author (who, after finishing the book, I learned is a former federal prosecutor) does a really good job at depicting the morally grey tactics used by prosecutors in attempting to “flip” witnesses. It felt super gritty and realistic without being melodramatic.
The first issue was how the reader is constantly told that there is a vast conspiracy but never shown it. We are told that the mob has people “on the inside” at every level who can track Madison and Kathryn’s every move but they only interact with three people. And once those three people are taken care of, suddenly everything is solved and Madison is free from the mob.
This leads into the second issue which is character agency or lack thereof. The resolution of the plot is not due to the actions of either main character but rather the sudden change of heart from a side character. This was such a letdown because neither Madison nor Kathryn ever outsmart the mob but are rather “saved.”
A minor gripe that I have is that I feel like it’s somewhat tacky to be namedropping brands throughout the book. Doordash, Instacart, etc are mentioned multiple times when a generic term (eg: takeout, grocery delivery) would have been just as good. I don’t think these brands actually sponsored the book but it reminded me of bad product placement in movies.
Overall, it was a solid book and a definite page-turner.
Thank you NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was an interesting legal thriller but unfortunately I didn’t mesh well with this one. It was a little slow for my liking and a bit too long, but it did have a good premise. I also didn’t really feel connected to the characters. I will still be checking out this author again though!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC!
This was a fast paced, suspenseful thriller—a federal judge’s intern slowly realizing the woman she idolized is “dirty” and involved with the mob. If you like that sort of storyline, it would be enjoyable, as the judge tries to figure out how to extricate herself from the far-reaching grasp of the mob and uses her unsuspecting (at first) intern to help her. Unfortunately I don’t love those kind of stories, and it kind of lost me at the end.
This is definitely different but it moved at a slower pace than I prefer and I felt like it was too long. I just couldn't vibe with the story because it seemed so outlandish and ended up feeling more like a political struggle session at times than a legal drama.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.
Is this a political thriller that is built around female mentorship or manipulation? That is the question. And who better to write it than Michele Campbell. With Ms. Campbell's personal knowledge of the court system, the criminal aspects of the story along with the justice system ring true bringing a realistic structure and atmosphere to The Intern.
Two women, the Intern Madison Rivera and Judge Kathryn Conroy, who has invited Rivera to apply for an internship, are connected by more than the obvious. Both having familial issues that reach back to their youth that threaten their current careers and possibly their lives and those they love.
These two women have to figure out who they can trust while knowing they are being watched and followed by law enforcement and criminal enterprises that may run close to, if not within the family.
Read if you enjoy political thrillers, women empowerment, family ties, unreliable protagonists, and maybe cats.
Thank you to St. Martin Press for access to an early e-copy via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
3.5 round up! I enjoyed this legal thriller. It was slow at times but kept my attention. I really enjoyed thepast and present time periods. Thanks so much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
This is a brilliant legal thriller with an excellent well-paced plot. It does keep you on your toes and the surprising twists add to the intrigue.
Highly recommend for fans of legal thrillers.
This is full of action, suspense and intrigue. Each character has her own deep-seeded secrets and the story starts from there. Dual time periods enlighten readers as to each character’s motives. An overall exciting read.
3.5 stars! This legal thriller definitely kept my interest, with the past and present storylines. Between the intern and the judge, both women had plenty of secrets to hide. Thanks so much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
This book will keep you guessing until the end. At times I wanted it to move faster, but also didn’t want it to end. Some characters seemed like they’d be significant but turned out to be minor parts.
This one just didn't work for me -- slow start, couldn't connect with the characters. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this one ahead of its release, even if it wasn't for me.
This is a thrilling tale about an intern to a judge, who finds herself in the middle of a crime ring and fighting to save her family, her career and her life! This book was so suspenseful and I couldn't put it down. The main female character was likeable and I was rooting for her right from start. Pick this one up. It won't distract! Thank you to Netgalley and St Martins Press and the author for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I am a huge fan of Michele Campbell. This book was one of those, you know the kind, that you CAN NOT PUT DOWN!
I tore thru this book in a few days, stealing away every moment I could find, in order to find out what was going to happen next. I am not kidding when I share with you, this was a non-put-downable-book. Making up descriptive explanations as I just can't tell you how much I loved this book.
A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.
Madison has been a fan of Judge Kathryn Conroy for some time and when she is finally offered the chance to intern for this highly revered Judge, she jumps at it. But, not before learning that her life has a direct connection to a case that is on this particular Judges docket. Despite that conflict, Madison keeps it close to her sleeve and takes the job. After that, the whirlwind begins. Twists, turns, suspense on every page. I couldn't turn them fast enough to learn what was happening next.
FANTASTIC end and I was very sad when the book was done. I wanted it to keep going. But.....it was amazing!
This was a really great legal thriller! I did think there were too many characters, it made things a little confusing but the plot was brilliant! I enjoyed the dual narrations and the ending was twisty and addicting!
A quick, witty and propulsive thriller set in Boston, this book dives into the high-powered world of law. A Harvard law student gets in over her head when she begins interning for the local judge, who may or may not be embroiled in a cover up. This was an easy read, exciting and fun-reminds me of How to Get Away With Murder!
This book definitely keeps you guessing. This was my first book by this author and this book kept me in suspense til the end. Definitely worth the read. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
