Thanks @netgalley for read number 87 of 2023. I always love @michelecampbellbooks’ novels, and this one was no exception. There were great twists throughout, and while I anticipated one, there were many I did not. The end made me all teary-eyed too. A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 read. Highly recommend. #avivaandfriendsrecos

This book reminds me of a first author debut novel. There’s a lot going on in this and if you’re not paying attention you may miss a relationship between characters that is important later.

While I enjoyed the dual points of view this was overall a bit busy of a book for my personal taste.

3.5 rounded up to 4. I love Michele Campbell, I have been anxiously awaiting for a book from her for a couple of years! So I dropped everything to read this one. Unfortunately, I think this was my least favorite book by her. The first half was really hard for me to get into and towards the middle/end I was just reading just to finish. This one took me a few months to finish because I had put it to the side. As for the characters and saving grace for me, my favorite character was Lucy by far! I bumped this up from a 3.5 to a 4 because I appreciated the ending and cared more about the main characters towards the end of the book. I would recommend It's Always the Husband or She Was the Quiet One if you want to read a Michele Campbell book far before this one.

Michelle Campbell is an Author to add to your favorites list! This story had my interest from the beginning! Madison Rivera seems like a character that is very easy to relate to. A law student with a secret who really admires Judge Kathryn Conroy!
I felt like the plot and setting really grabbed my attention first but the character development is really what stayed with me afterward. This book dives into the grey areas between right and wrong and twists them inside out! Very good and I do recommend!

I enjoyed Michele Campbell’s The Wife Who Knew Too Much and The Intern is another good one. It’s a dream come true for Harvard law student Madison Rivera when she gets an internship with her idol Judge Kathryn Conroy. Unfortunately for Madison, her younger brother Danny is arrested and his case will be heard by Judge Conroy. Danny mysteriously disappears after claiming Judge Conroy is corrupt and it’s up to Madison to get to the truth. This is a fast-paced, well-written psychological thriller and I look forward to reading more of Michele Campbell’s books. Thanks to #netgalley #stmartinspress and #michelecampbell for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. I found myself wanting to read as often as I could. The story line kept my attention. Michele Campbell never disappoints.

I have been a big fan of Michele Campbell ever since reading her very first novel in my pre-bookstagram/pre-social media days. I have always jumped at the chance to read a digital ARC of her upcoming books, and this one was no exception. When I saw that Michele Campbell had a new book coming out, I immediately knew that I wanted to read it; I didn't even look to see what the synopsis was about before hitting "Request" on Netgalley. Madison is a law student at Harvard who just landed the internship of her dreams with Judge and Professor Kathy Conroy. She is beyond excited to work alongside her idol, but there is just one minor complication: her brother, Danny, has recently been convicted of drug possession and sentenced to prison, and his lawyer has ties with Conroy. Danny claims he is innocent and was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Madison quickly gets in over her head when she realizes that Conroy is also hiding some secrets of her own, putting Madison and her family in harm's way. Madison sees the internship with Judge Conroy as a potential way to help her brother overturn his conviction. The story goes back and forth between the past and present; the past focusing on Judge Conroy's upbringing and childhood and all the dirty lawyers and men who were a part of it. The readers learn how Conroy has gotten to where she's at and just how tangled up in dirty dealings she really is. You're left trying to figure out if Madison will help Judge Conroy or turn against her, and wondering what you would do in a similar situation. There were parts that were fast-paced, and other parts that took their time telling a story of survival, which I found to be a good balance in the story. There were a lot of strong female characters in the story: Madison, Judge Conroy, Madison's mom, Kathy's mom, and more. You see the mother/daughter relationship touched upon and I did find myself rooting for all of them. I like the Madison was (mostly) a character of integrity; she was a part of a few sketchy things, but overall, I felt like she stuck to her guns and remained loyal to those that she should have, including her brother, Danny. This was a solid procedural that I really enjoyed! Thank you to the publisher, St. Martin's press, for giving me the chance to read an early digital copy of The Intern!

I’m a huge fan of Michele Campbell’s work and immediately put in a request to read her upcoming novel, THE INTERN. I enjoyed the premise of an intern working for a high profile judge, who may or may not be involved in shady dealings, particularly one that is close to home. The suspense factor was cranked up the entire time, as she becomes intertwined in the judge’s life, and quickly dismissing her own safety for… justice! I was pleasantly surprised by the POV of the judge and it helped steer the story and give the judge some personality and perspective. Overall, a quick read with some surprises thrown in that will delight you.

NO spoilers here. The following is my opinion/thoughts and not a synopsis of the book. The Intern by Michele Campbell was NOT at all what I was expecting. It can best be characterized as a suspenseful sort of legal thriller. There aren’t any court room cases but the characters either work in the legal system or are training to be. I definitely was on the edge of my seat with this one. And it really made me think, does this really happen? Either way, I enjoyed this book but would say I liked her others better. I always read It’s Always the Husband and The Wife Who Knew Too Much and would recommend those first if you haven’t read any of Campbell’s books.

Another great book from Michele Campbell. The characters are intriguing, the plot is captivating, and the whole story kept me reading all night. This was one of those stories where you never knew quite who was lying, telling the truth, and how it was all going to end. A must read!

I’m a fan of Michele Campbell’s books and have read and enjoyed each of her previous ones. I was particularly anxious to read The Intern because I’m an attorney and former prosecutor. Everything about it - the setting, the plot, and the characters appealed to me.

Let me first say that I’m definitely not someone who is prone to writing gushy book reviews. That having been said, if I could give this book ten stars, I would. I’m not exaggerating. It’s that good.

Harvard Law School student Madison Rivera has wanted to be a lawyer since the day she heard Judge Kathryn Conroy speak as part of a career day program at her high school, the same high school Kathryn graduated from some years before. Now, Kathryn is a federal judge in Boston who also teaches a course at Harvard Law School and Madison is one of her students.

Out of the blue, while having a brief discussion after class about a case, Kathryn tells Madison that there is an opening for an intern in her chambers and urges Madison to apply. Interestingly, Kathryn is the judge presiding over a case involving Madison’s brother, Danny, who was framed for a drug crime he didn’t commit and coerced into entering a guilty plea by a shady lawyer. While Madison is aware of this and very concerned about her brother, she doesn’t disclose it to Kathryn and Kathryn seems unaware of it.

Kathryn selects Madison for the job after interviewing two other applicants and Madison accepts the job offer. She quickly discovers that Judge Conroy’s chambers are, to say the least, unorthodox. The two law clerks, Imani and Sean, who are supposed to be Madison’s supervisor are friendly and helpful, but it’s the nasty and uber-controlling Nancy, a non-attorney who is and is supposedly an office manager, not Judge Conroy, who controls what goes on in the judge’s chambers, including how certain cases are decided. Although Madison is told by Nancy in no uncertain terms that Madison’s contact with the judge will be limited to sitting in the courtroom to listen to cases being heard, Kathryn initiates a personal relationship with Madison by inviting her to dinner after Madison’s first day at work.

From that point on, almost nothing is as it seems and Madison gets entangled in Kathryn’s seamy personal and professional worlds, not sure if her mentor is a victim or a dangerous criminal.

In my experience novels usually either have a great plot or great characters. It’s rare to find a book that has both. But The Intern is one of those books. The plotline is never dull. It moves quickly and seamlessly while it keeps the reader guessing. As for the characters, they are complex and never flat cardboard types. For the most part, the characters, including Kathryn, are hiding major secrets and engaging in illegal activities, including murder. While they aren’t - and for this type of storyline cannot be - the most sympathetic of characters, they are definitely interesting and keep the riveting and complex plot moving at a steady pace.

I read The Intern in one sitting and stayed up all night because I was so engrossed in it. I read at least eight or nine books a month and this is truly the best book I’ve read this year. I highly recommend it.

This was fabulous. From the outset, this story gripped me. A law intern lands a clerkship with a woman that she has admired for years - but it turns out this woman not only has a secret, the intern is tangled up in it. I could not put this down.

The Intern by Michelle Campbell gets 5 heart-pumping stars. Madison is a shining star law student at Harvard when her brother, Danny, is arrested on drug charges. Danny insists that he is innocent and is being framed by his attorney, arresting officer, and even the judge. It just so happens that said judge assigned to Danny's case is also Madison's law professor. When Judge Conroy offers Madison a coveted internship in her chambers, Madison jumps at the change--both for the experience, and the opportunity to get inside information on Danny's case. But Madison couldn't have possibly anticipated the mess she gets herself into when she dives head first into Judy Conroy's dark and seedy world. This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

Yikes! Sometimes something too good to be true doesn't always work out the way you want it to.

This books makes you second guess who to trust and who is the enemy. I loved trying to figure it out, but the feeling of being trapped stressed me out. I really felt for Judge Conroy and I can definitely see how she got into her predicament.

Thanks NetGalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange my honest review!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC for a Review. Book had a great cover and the synopsis sounded great so I had to read it. Madison, a law student, found out her brother is taking a plea deal that sounded unjust. She also found out her idol and professor was involved woth her brother's case. Madison took a role as an intern to get in the bottom of things.
The book is written in 2 POVs. The beginning got me hooked, but it went downhill for me after the 50% mark.

It has been quite some time since I delved into the pages of Michele Campbell's literary works. Nevertheless, I am delighted to declare that her mastery remains unyielding. The characters she conjures are vibrant, brimming with distinct personas and immaculately crafted. Although the narrative commenced in a leisurely manner, reminiscent of countless uninspired tales of lawyers and mobsters, a dramatic transformation unfolded in the heart of the story and, without question, at its culmination, which completely altered my perspective. There are still times when the storyline has holes, including a part in the ending that had me asking 'how.'

Wow! What an intense legal thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed it and could not turn the pages fast enough.

Madison is a Harvard Law student who is offered a too good to be true intetship with her idol, Judge Conroy.
But when her brother Danny is arrested and then disappears after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison falls down the rabbit hole of secrets, mystery, and murder.

Cambell's style of writing is captivating, and fans of mystery, legal thrillers, and procedurals will love this.

I read this literally in just a few hours....it was super fast paced.

Told from two different POV"s: Judge Kathryn Conroy and her new intern Madison. Conroy is lecturing a class at Harvard to which Madison attends and wants that coveted internship to booster her resume. One small issue is that Madison's brother has been arrested and the Judge on the case is Conroy. Each woman has secrets. Madison doesn't disclose her brother is on the Judge's docket and the Judge herself has a past that is coming back to haunt her and in turn affects Madison.

There was nothing new here, but just one of those reads that draws you in and you need to see how it ends. Think a very nice beach read.

Another edge of your seat page turner from Michelle Campbell. It's easy to put yourself in everyone shoes and trust no one. Corrupt cops, lawyers, judges, the mob, and a Harvard Law college kid, all together in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Who is telling the truth and who will escape with their life? Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Intern follows Madison, a Harvard Law student, who begins interning for a Judge who’s also one of her professors. Judge Conroy also happens to be the Judge on Madison’s brother’s case, where he was supposedly framed for selling drugs. Her opinion of the Judge starts to waiver as she gets an inside look on her real life and starts to dig. Is Judge Kathy Conroy really as admirable as Madison thinks? Or is she mixed up in some sketchy things?

I really enjoyed this one! I’m not normally one for legal thrillers, but it wasn’t too heavy on the legal side of things. I did find it a little hard to keep track of all the characters at play, in regards to Kathy’s past. Overall, I would recommend this! There were a few twists, nothing too shocking, but it kept my interest. It wasn’t over the top, so I found it believable.
