I loved the concept of this novel but the execution fell flat for me. In the end there wasn’t enough suspense and also too much going on. I found the plot line also very hard to buy into, I know it must be difficult to get yourself of a situation where people in high places have a lot of influence over you, but some of the choices the judge and especially Maddy made were incredibly naive and childish.
I did think the writing was really good though — I enjoyed Campbell’s style and use of similes/metaphors. Otherwise, I wasn’t overly impressed with the storyline.
Law student Madison Rivera lands an amazing internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy. Madison is keeping a secret from the Judge that could ruin her future... but what Madison doesn't know is that the Judge has secrets of her own. Madison has to try to save her family and not ruin her future, and things are much more complicated than she ever could have imagined.
I thought this was a good, quick read - the pace is fast, and you're guessing what's going to happen until the end. While I thought that some of the plot was a bit far-fetched, I was definitely interested enough to care about what happened in the end. Both female leads are strong characters, and you end up cheering for both to win, despite their flaws.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. But I found this book completely boring and predictable. I’ve read others by this author and absolutely loved them. This was definitely my least favorite.
My first book by this author and I'm obsessed. First of it startes with Madison a law student who becomes an intern for Kathryn and this job it comes with twist and mystery. I love everything about this book although I wish they could've expand the ended a little more. Adding this author to my favorite list.
This is a complicated mess.
The title could be “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive”.
Every action and decision has consequences but when you unknowingly fall into a trap, it can put you in an impossible bind.
There is some language and abusive situations.
Great book! The story felt new and refreshing compared to other mysteries I’ve read lately. The main character is likable and relatable and the main character’s’ backstories were well developed. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
This was my first book by this author. The synopsis sounded so juicy and interesting, but the book fell a bit flat for me. This took me a week to read, which is very slow (for me okay!) and that in itself is never a good sign. It started off strong, but then I put it down and didn't have the urge to pick it up again, and finished it in little stretches of time.
Writing: 3/5 - Plot: 2.5/5 - Ending: 3/5
This was a fine novel. The writing was decent but Kathryn's character was strange. She felt like two people. I get what Madison was doing, but I didn't care for her character or her trying to save her brother. I found the characters hard to connect with and found myself not caring.
This became very much a mob/mafia plot and I personally don't care for that much. I didn't understand some of the motives behind things. This is a decently twisty one, but because I had a hard time connecting with these people, I didn't care much and found myself not shocked.
I was skimming by the 2nd half. It felt repetitive at times and too long for its own good. I found myself perking up by the end again, and actually liked one aspect of the ending, so I am sticking with a 3 star rather than a 2.5.
TW:
Violence
I was engrossed in this legal thriller. It is full of action twist and turns and cat an mouse.. I was second guessing who to trust until the very end.
It was a quick read and would recommend it.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy.
I really struggled with this one. I kept putting it down and picking it back up again. I finally finished it but I found it clunky and a bit boring.
But I did like the characters which is what kept me reading. I wanted to love this but I just didn't.
The author has put together an excellent cast of characters in a tale of corruption involving a judge, cop, lawyer, a framed drug dealer, and his sister, a Harvard 2L working as the judge’s intern. When the FBI investigation brings in the judge, the bad guys go to great lengths to protect their interests
Loved this Boston-based legal/psychological suspense! A real cat-and-mouse book, following Madison—a Harvard law student, and Judge Conroy—a federal judge.
Madison is offered an internship in the Judge’s office…and it turns out that things are falling apart behind the facade of the job and the prestige that comes with it. All thanks to some mysterious interlopers who seem to be involved with a whole lot of corruption.
I didn’t know what to think about who was guilty, who was guilty by association, who was morally grey but on the right side, or who may have had a storied past but was on the right side of things now.
Overall, this was an action-packed ride that I loved! Add in Lucy the cat, and it became a perfect book (that reminded me why I left law!)
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and St. Martin’s Press for a review copy!
I was patiently waiting for the next book of Michele Campbell and as always she has another best seller!
From the beginning I was engrossed in this legal thriller, full of action, twists, turns and cat and mouse!
It was good from start to finish! Now, to wait patiently for her next one!
“The Intern” is the latest captivating thriller by Michelle Campbell, author of “It’s Always the Husband” and “Stranger on the Beach.”
Law student Madison gets the position of her life when she is asked to intern for Judge Kathryn, a woman who comes from a similar background as she. But Madison’s brother, Danny is accepting a plea deal, a case that the judge has been assigned. There are also some questions about the mysterious death of the judge’s husband. Madison is determined to clear her brother but worries about her new employer discovering her ulterior motives.
As an attorney and law professor, I am partial to legal thrillers, even with plots where you might have to somewhat suspend belief. (Madison could never have gotten a position like this so easily). The novel alternates between Madison’s point of view and that of Kathryn. Though I found Madison to be a much more likable and relatable character, getting to know Kathryn helped to explain the choices she made. Overall, fans of Michelle Campbell and thrillers in general will find this a compelling read.
Many thanks to Michelle Campbell, NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Michele Campbell could write a soup can and I’d read it. Another tale of the naïf among the rich and powerful, but who is the sheep and who is the wolf, when no one is who they seem? Five beach house book stars.
I read The Stranger on the Beach and it was okay, so when I saw a chance to read The Intern for free, I thought I would give it a try. I really liked this one so much better. This really kept me guessing about the Judge and there were twists and turns that I didn't see coming and wasn't quite sure where they were going to go. I would give this book a 4.4 on the rating scale. The only reason I don't go higher is because I am not a big fan of books with violence. This was more of a psychological thriller with a little violence. I will keep Michelle Campbell on my radar and try another one of her books.
Not my favorite from this author and not sure it is a thriller but I did enjoy the story. Will still be a fan a michele Campbell. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
I was excited to receive an advanced copy of The Intern by Michelle Campbell as I really loved The Wife Who Knew Too Much.
Unfortunately, it feels like 2 different people wrote those books. I really struggled through this one, especially the first part. The writing was clunky and dialogue SO awkward. The story had potential but overall it just didn't work for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for an advanced copy of The Intern.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this E-ARC! Second book I have read by Michele Campbell. I love stories involving lawyers and courtrooms and this book did not disappoint. Lots of plot twists and fast paced! Highly recommend!!
Madison is a Harvard Law student working to become a lawyer. Her professor, Kathryn is also the reason she wanted to become a lawyer so when .she is offered the the opportunity to intern with her office, she jumps at the chance. Her excitement is overshadowed with worry thoughvbecause she has a brother that is currently incarcerated and claims he was set up and it seems like her mentor may be involved.
As Madison gets pulled into Kathryn's life, she realizes that she is not who she thought she was.
Told from both main characters, this was an exciting novel full of unexpected twists.
The Intern was a fun twisty read and I really enjoyed the plot lines and the strong female characters.
The author does an excellent job with pacing in this novel. It felt like there was urgency from the first pages until the very end. My only major gripe is that it got a little repetitive in the middle.
I would highly recommend the Intern to anyone interested in fast paced thrillers and law-based thrillers.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this ARC!
