Madison Rivera is following her dream of becoming a lawyer. She is a student at Harvard. She is really impressed with Federal Judge, Kathryn Conroy, who is teaching her class. She really enjoys Judge Conroy’s class.
Madison gets a call from her mother that her brother Danny has been arrested and is basically being railroaded by the police, his lawyer, and the Judge. Madison and her mother meet with her brother in jail. He looks horrible. It looks like he has been beaten. Madison want to help him by looking further into his case. Danny is adamant that he doesn’t want her to pursue it, because Detective Wallace informed him that he would definitely kill him and go after his mother as well.
While this is going on, Madison finds out that the Judge involved in her brother’s case is Judge McCoy.
Judge McCoy has been impressed with Madison. She offers Madison the opportunity to apply for an internship in her Chambers. Madison is thrilled, but what should she do about her brother being incarcerated on a drug charge? Should she hide it or be honest with the Judge?
She applied for the position and gets hired. Her brother told her that the Judge was on the take and that the Judge also knows the prosecutor very well. She is adamant to check out her brothers case and see exactly what’s going on with her brothers case.
Is the Judge really on the take and corrupt? How does the Judge know the Prosecutor so well? What’s the connection between the Judge and Detective Wallace?
Will Madison find out what’s really going on? Will she be able to keep it a secret that her brother is incarcerated?
The plot always evolved throughout the book. It definitely kept the reader on their toes. The character development was great as well. I didn’t like the antagonist in this book at all. I was rooting for the protagonist in this book.
I definitely didn’t see the end coming, that’s for sure! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book and. Madison gets a job helps judge. When her brother is in court he goes missing. Madison is unsure of who to trust and what her next step should be. This was a good book.
I was just asking myself a few weeks ago if Michele Campbell was writing anything new and then BAM The Intern e-galley makes it's way into my inbox! She always writes such fun thriller/suspense books and I dug right into this one. This is exactly what I remember Michele writing and I enjoyed every second that I got to read it. Thanks so much to the publisher for my copy of this book!
Madison Riveria, Harvard Law student, has always admired her law professor - Federal Judge Kathryn Conroy. They grew up in the same town and went to the same school, and of course Madison can only dream of being as successful as Judge Conroy someday. Imagine Madison's delight when the Judge encourages her to apply for an internship in her clerk office. All that excited is suddenly met with dread when she learns that her brother, recently arrested for drug trafficking, was one of Judge Conroy's cases... and her brother is claiming the Judge is fixing the case with the lawyer and cops involved. The Intern is a thrilling book where you can't help but love the characters. I was in tears at the end (but maybe that's partially the cat lover in me)! Regardless, this is a must read by Michele Campbell and I'm so glad I was able to read an advanced copy!
The Intern was a fast-paced procedural thriller that kept me hooked from the beginning. I really enjoyed how the different POVs were separated up into different parts of the book so they weren't just continuously going back and forth. I think that helped add to the character development and made it easier to put together the different backstories of the characters.
Overall, I really enjoyed the unknown aspect of who the true villain was. There were many times throughout the book when I went back and forth on who I disliked and who I could trust which really helped add an air of unsureness and made me not want to put the book down.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes lawyer/judge dramas and thrillers, and someone who enjoys fast-paced reads. It was a wonderful book and I rated it 4/5 stars!
First time reader of this author and am definitely a big fan and will be reading her others. The Intern had an easy flow and a plot that sucked me in. Yes, there are hundreds of books with this same basic plot, but the author made it seem fresh and new. I highly recommend this book and greatly appreciate the author not writing pages and pages of filler details that were not needed.
Thanks to the publisher and author for the book. It was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Suspense and mystery at its best. This is a quick read with red herrings that make guessing the ending difficult. This talented and gifted author has written a cannot put down novel. It is a quick read with intriguing characters. Madison is a law student and interns for her idol judge. What ensues is almost unbelievable. Along with her irritating mom, she has a brother in jail. Add an ex boyfriend, and the story just keeps getting better. Enjoy this novel which reads like nonfiction at times. This would make a great movie.
Thank you Netgalley & St. Martin's Press for an eARC of The Intern in exchange for an honest review!
This was an OK read for me, I typically love the academic spin on suspense and mystery novels, but this one wasn't my favorite.
Madison is a young Harvard law student, taking a class with her idol, a charismatic judge Kathryn Conroy. She lands an internship with the judge at the same time her younger brother, Danny, has been arrested. It just so happens that Conroy is the judge on his case, too. Kathryn is Madison's mentor, but what else is she?
This is a game of cat-and-mouse that in my opinion is very predictable.
The Intern by Michele Campbell is compelling from start to finish, and thoroughly believable. I found myself thinking, "There’s no way this plot situation can be resolved. I wonder HOW the author is going to do it?!" The answer was certaibly not disappointing. The characters were well thought out and I found myself really vested in them. The surprises and plot twists felt small and numerous rather than one big "aha!" moment, but each was satisfying. I will definitely follow this author and eagerly await her next book and the one after that. The Intern is easily 6 put of 5 stars!
Loved! So well written! This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year. It was a true thriller. The legalese was so on point (I had no idea that Michelle Campbell, the author, went to law school but that certainly explains why). The mafia/mob representation was interesting without stealing the scene or story of the book & truly shows how Kathryn’s character ended up in her position while she was a true moral & honest person. Really enjoyed this book, as I do any book by Michelle Campbell. If you enjoy suspense or thrillers, pick this up & you’ll be “thrilled” you did😁
An internship with a federal judge, especially one you have long looked up to and admired, is a coup for an ambitious law student. Madison Rivera is thrilled at the unexpected offer from Judge Kathryn Conroy. However, the timing is not the best, as Madison's brother, Danny, has been arrested on drug charges, and has been pressured/coerced into pleading guilty. Madison learns that Judge Conroy is the judge handling the case, which presents a host of problems, as it is illegal to attempt to influence the decision of a federal judge, so she cannot really advocate on her brother's behalf to the judge, but also, if she tells the judge that her brother has been arrested on federal drug charges, she will likely lose the internship opportunity as well. Madison withholds that information, planning to share it soon, when the proper opportunity arises.
However, Judge Conroy finds out before Madison is able to tell her. The judge is the subject of a federal corruption investigation. She has been involved in a range of criminal activities, albeit not entirely willingly, and the individuals who are controlling her are also keeping a tight watch on her, and those with whom she associates. She wants to escape, but she has already lost someone important to her during a past attempt to escape, and she has people she needs to keep protecting. Madison's efforts to help her brother and help the judge will put her in the crosshairs of both federal officials and the organization pressuring Judge Conroy. Neither one can be fully honest with the other nor fully trust the other, but Madison and Judge Conroy will have to work together to save themselves and the ones they love. In addition to all the machinations currently, the story goes back and explains how Judge Conroy ended up in her current situation. The story has lots of twists and turns, and some pretty good surprises.
I was so excited to receive this as I read her other books. This story is very different from her other books. I felt this was all over the place with mafia, police and court all combined kind of reminds me of Law and Order. It’s not bad but it’s different from her other books.
Madison has wrangled an invitation to an internship working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. A judge with a reputation. But Madison has a connection to the judge that no one knows about. Beginning your new career with a secret is never great, but the judge has secrets of her own.
Madison’s brother, Danny, is in prison for drugs. None of us think he did anything, but he is terrified of Judge Kathryn! Right away you get the sense that this is messy. A judge on the take from the mob? Maybe.
When Danny goes missing after accusing the said judge of improper conduct, Madison digs deeper into her. What she finds is confusing. Is she crooked? Is she a victim?
They could join forces or they could just kill each other.
This was not my favorite by this author. It kept to the formula though.

I have read all of Michele Campbell's books, and "The Intern" is my favourite!
"The Intern" is fast-paced and suspenseful. The characters all have things to hide, and sometimes there is a fine line between right and wrong, or doing the wrong things for the right reasons.
The book is divided into parts, narrated by the Intern, Madison, and the Judge, Kathryn. I wasn't crazy about Madison in part 1: she seemed too self-centered and full of herself, but she grew on me. I loved the dynamic between Madison and Kathryn. It was interesting to see their relationship develop and evolve. The book deals a lot with friendships, family relationships, loyalty, and trust. A great weekend read!
I would like to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book!

The.Intern is a good, fast paced and very exciting read. There are a lot of secrets and deceitful things going on. I enjoyed thois book and I hoghly recommend it.. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
How does a person decide whom to trust? Madison Rivera, the main character in The Intern by Michele Campbell, thinks of Judge Kathryn Conroy as being above reproach. Even a gentle warning from a friend doesn't slow her down much. Madison wants to believe in the woman she's put up on a pillar.
And that is where the wild ride begins. Madison accepts the internship offered by Judge Conroy, not disclosing that her brother has just been sentenced to prison for a drug offense. The secrets, the weird rules, the inconsistencies begin to pile up-- on both sides.
Suddenly Madison is in danger. Deciding whom to trust becomes even more critical.
I enjoyed Campbell's previous book, The Wife Who Knew Too Much, also dark and exciting. The only other book I can liken to The Intern is The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.
I couldn't put it down. I read the whole thing in less than a weekend because it was just that good.
I enjoyed this book. There was action, twists and turns that kept you reading. I wish I didn't have to put it down as much as I did because I would've finished it fast! liked the back and forth between Madison and Judge Conroy. I felt bad for the Judge and the situation she was put in. She trusted her Uncle Ray and he threw her under the bus by using her education and place as a judge. She was young and naive and just wanted a good education! Too bad that meant she owed the debt back to Ray....
Madison was a likable character as well. Her perseverance to find out what happened to her brother and who framed him and why.
I loved the last 1/4 of the book. The relationship development between Judge and Madison was really sweet. Their trust got stronger and they were willing to risk their lives to help one another. I enjoyed that!
Great read.
So good! I really enjoyed this read! Will purchase more from this author. I was kept guessing throughout the book
I wanted to love this book and give it a 5/5- it had the makes of stories I love. The plot was there, the characters too, it just felt very rushed. I wanted to know the characters and their stories a bit better to give the story additional context. It felt a bit like a movie adaptation of a good book- the storyline was there but it was just slightly lacking.
This one started off super strong but quickly became convoluted, repetitive, and implausible. But I found it compelling and readable enough to finish it. I feel like it could use a good editor - some of the passages read very stilted. I think I mainly kept reading because I had just visited Boston and really loved it there. It’s worth a read but it’s not earth-shattering.
Thanks to St. Martin’s for an advance copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
