Authors can be the best secret keepers...

To say I'm Michele Campbell's number one fan would be the biggest understatement of the year.

I AM OBSESSED

and that is putting it lightly.

Funny story, another author friend of mine (Jaime Lynn Hendricks) had suggested I read Michele Campbell when I was In one of my book slumps. I would pick up a book, read a few chapters, put it down, then repeat. After swimming around this fish bowl for over a week I decided to pick up It's Always The Husband.

Game Over

Not only was I out of my book slump but I had a new author to feverishly obsess over. I did not sleep the week I found Michele Campbell, instead I read each one of her books back to back during every waking moment.

This woman is an absolute rockstar who delivers each and every time she puts out a new release.

But you see Michele has been hiding a secret from me....

I had no idea about The Intern until I opened up Netgalley one morning and it was staring right back at me .

OMG

I needed this book. I started to sweat...

This was the book of my dreams and I could not accept failure...

Well, as you can see, the cute little book fairies over at St. Martin's Press, granted my wish.

I might sound a bit delirious, as I was up all night reading but it was so worth it.

As always, this is without a doubt another 5 star read but did you expect anything less from Campbell? I know I didn't. Her writing style will suck you right in and plunge you right into the deep end of deceit. I was submerged in this book from start to finish and quickly became addicted to each flip of the page. I was racing to the finish line !!!

The suspense had me gripping my chest and shrieking out loud "oh no oh no oh no" .

If I could suggest one book for you this year, it would be this one. Definitely this one.

Here is a little teaser :

A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.

Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her? As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?

Thank you Michele Campbell, St. Martin Press and Netgalley for granting this little Campbell obsessed reader the highest honor of reading and reviewing The Intern before its October 3, 2023 release date in exchange for an honest review.

Now, to my followers, you know what to do....Pre-Order the book!!

A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.

It was a great read. Different than the previous books by Michele Campbell. It kept my attention, great character development - and I wasn’t sure how it was going to end! All of my favorite things in a book. 5/5

Madison lands the internship of her dreams in a prestigious judge's office. She quickly learns how much her and the judge, Kathryn, have in common. Kathryn also had to rely on others' generosity in order to get where she was in life. But Madison has to keep her brother a secret while at the law office. He is nothing but trouble and had just gotten arrested on major drug charges. She couldn't let Danny ruin things for her. But Madison's mom won't let up on her. She has to help Danny; he is family. Suddenly the judge warms to Madison and pulls her into a dark world, she doesn't know if she can escape. She may be dragging Danny down with her. How is she going to navigate this world, plagued with the worst criminals she has ever seen?
I just love Michelle Campbell! She keeps the best secrets and you never know where the story is going to end up! In The Intern by Michelle Campbell just when you think you have everyone figured out, Michelle finds a new twist in the character or storyline. I really enjoyed this legal thriller and will always recommend Michelle Campbell's work to others. I am always on the lookout for new work by Campbell and I am never disappointed. Special thanks to NetGalley, Michelle Campbell, and St. Martin's Press for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion. 4 big stars for me!!

This sounded really interesting to me, but unfortunately I did not finish this one. By the middle of the book, I realized I didn't care enough about the story anymore, or the outcome.

This felt very much like a first draft, the ideas were there but still a little convoluted… and this leaned way more into the mob space than I initially expected. Kept me reading but didn’t blow my mind the way I was anticipating.

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

THE INTERN has an interesting premise and the first 50% was a quick and entertaining read - however, the plot really started getting convoluted (and not in a good way) around the 60% mark. I made it to the end but mostly just felt relief when it was over.

I enjoyed this book. I like multiple POV and alternating timelines, both of which this novel included. I did get a little lost in some of the details of the story especially at the end.

3.5 stars rounded to 4. This was a well written book that was more of a mystery than a thriller. Madison is a law student at Harvard and lands a dream internship, but this is the same Judge who sent her innocent brother to prison. Is she going to risk her career to help set her brother free? Is the Judge as crooked as her brother says? The story was told on a non linear timeline from multiple view points which was enjoyable but a little hard to follow at times. The Intern is definitely a book worth reading!

Madison Rivera feels like she won the lottery when she lands an internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy, her longtime idol in the legal world. But when Madison's brother is arrested for a crime that he didn't commit and Madison begins to delve into the circumstances, Judge Conroy's shady associations come to light. The "uncle" who financed her education has ulterior motives... and he may be the least of her worries as the web of deception and murder begins to unfold.

4.5⭐️! In my opinion, Michele Campbell can write no wrong! As always, I loved this book and the multiple POVs! You meet Kathryn, a well renowned and respected judge and Harvard professor with a dark past and Madison, her intelligent yet mysterious intern. In a weird twist of fate, their worlds collide but will they trust each other? I was on edge the entire book wondering who indeed was the culprit. I enjoyed the plot twists throughout the storyline and was utterly shocked in the end! Although I guessed one of the twists, some of the others I was not prepared for! I enjoyed the past to present from each chapter and the character backstories to help understand them better in present day. Overall, it was a quick read and I loved it!!

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Book: The Intern
Author: Michele Campbell
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Pub Date: October 3, 2023

My only question during the book was what about the cat?!? 🐱 I just wanted they darn cat to be safe. But seriously this was a solid read. It was fast paced and while there wasn’t anything different about this storyline it was still a good book. I enjoy Michele Campbell books and she writes very easy to read stories. There was one twist that I didn’t see coming but everything about it is very predictable. There are enough secrets to keep you reading until the very end.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this sneak peak! Publication date is October 3, 2023.

3.75⭐️. The Intern is full of lies and unlikely partnerships. Madison, the law student, is interning for the judge, Kathryn, that sentenced her brother to prison. The story is told in dual POV and dual timelines. The book kept me guessing about who was guilty and who is about to show their true colors. It's got a mob type feel to it. But I enjoyed the characters and the story.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy.

I usually love Michele Campbell’s thrillers, but this one missed the mark. The plot was ridiculous and much of the dialogue came across as stilted and/or juvenile. Not sure what went wrong during the writing process of this book.

I received an advanced copy from Net Gallery. The Intern is about murder, lying, and scandals…what more would you want in a book?! The book was a fast read which kept my attention to the very last page. I only gave it 3 stars because the end came across as too “happy” for my liking for a plot which could have had a better ending. I agree the ending wrapped up the plot every well.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this read,. The Intern was quite good. It starts of how I love my novels with regular mundane things happening in people lives and then it picks off. There were things in this books that I found very funny as well as jaw dropping too. At around 60%, the book took off and became the Mystery/Thriller it was called to be. The book was a good time. I wanted to read this so quickly when I saw the cover, The cover spoke Mystery/Thriller to me, The door blurred and you want to see what is going on behind it. Curiosity killed the cat. Haha

Wow, what a ride! I read The Intern: A Novel by Michele Campbell in one day as I could not put it down. I was actually sad to come to the end of the book. I started to really like the characters and the storyline and felt like I was right in the middle of the action with them.

There were some very heart-stopping scenes. The story is told from the perspectives of Madison, a law school student and intern, and Kathryn, a federal judge. Madison falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family, and murder.

This is the first book I've read by this author. It will not be the last. The book is not necessarily a page-turner, but that is because the characters and scenes are developed slowly, so the reader gets involved in the storyline and sees how we can slip from trying to do the right thing to being born into a not-so-above-the-law family.

The Intern is a good mystery thriller story. A 4.75 rating out of 5 (rounded to 5).

Betrayal and scandalous behavior made this book a wild ride! Madison and Katherine were strong female characters. It was refreshing to read about them because women in thrillers are often portrayed as weak and clueless. The judge/intern relationship was also intriguing to me because it had so many gray areas that the author explored. I enjoyed this fast paced thriller and will be checking out more books by the author.

I’m a big fan of Michele Campbell’s books, but this is for sure my favorite of them. A young law student gets a dream internship with a judge she’s idolized for years, but not all is as it seems. Crooked lawyers, dirty cops, and a judge with ties to the mob are just the start of this page turner. 4.5 stars

Madison Rivera is a law student with a problem. Her idol and mentor, Judge Conroy, has offered her an internship. It will look outstanding on her resume and bring her even closer to her dreams of becoming a lawyer. The problem? Her younger brother Danny has been arrested and the judge in his case is Judge Conroy. Does she divulge the truth to the judge and risk losing the internship?

Madison lies. She has numerous opportunities to come clean but she doesn't. She tells herself she's doing it to help her brother but in reality she's being a bit selfish and looking out for her future career. While I appreciate the sentiment of doing anything for a sibling, Madison was also looking out for herself.

We soon learn that the judge and Madison had similar upbringings, and they form a strange bond over it. It's also revealed that the judge has her own secrets and Madison finds herself drawn into the intrigue whether she likes it or not.

The story is told from both Madison and Judge Conroy's point of view, in both past and present day. Both women appear to be fairly intelligent but are plagued by impulsivity and resulting bad choices. There were a few times I paused in reading to shake my head at them. Both characters are flawed and it's hard for Madison to accept that the judge isn't as perfect as she had thought.

This book is a fast-paced, easy read. Hints of lies, corruption and even a mob-like feel will keep you reading. It wasn't my favorite book this year but it's definitely a solid read.

Many thanks go to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.
