The Intern is told from two different POV"s: Judge Kathryn Conroy and her intern Madison. Conroy is lecturing a class at Harvard and Madison attends hoping to win a coveted internship. The problem is that Madison's brother has been arrested and the Judge on the case is Conroy which Madison doesn't disclose. But she's not the only one keeping a secret as the Judge herself has a dark past that is coming back to haunt her and in turn affects Madison.
The Intern is an intense legal thriller that holds readers captive from beginning to end with a well-written, potently executed plot line. Outstanding characterization and a steadily increasing pace keep readers burning through pages for answers. Twists and turns are hidden throughout, and readers will burn the midnight oil to finish this highly atmospheric thriller.
Thoughts
This was a really good thriller. I don't read many thrillers anymore so it is nice to pick one up and it be really good.
I was worried about the big time hop in the middle but it worked fine.
If you're a thriller lover I think this one is a good one to pick up.
Michelle Campbell had me with her first novel Itโs always the husband, which to this day is still my favorite! With that being said this one came really close second place! I have been yearning for another novel like her first, I have read every single one of her novels! She definitely is very talented writer and this one got a bit away from her usual domestic thriller vibe. Also I loved a good police procedural involved, love the dual timelines, I think it worked very well. It was very fast paced and a bit predictable but I enjoyed it all the same!

THE INTERN is an exhilarating journey through the legal maze, & is a law thriller that kept me hooked from the first page.
The story follows Madison & her pursuit of justice for her falsely accused brother. She is a recent grad of Harvard law & ends up landing the internship of her dreams with her idol, Judge Conroy. She ends up finding out, that low & behind, Judge Conroy also happens to be the judge on her brotherโs case. She should be able to convince her of her brotherโs innocence & help her out right? Unless there is more to Conroy that meets the eyeโฆ
The plot unfolds seamlessly, with a perfect blend of cat-&-mouse games, dirty cops, blackmail, danger, & unexpected twists. @michelecampbellbooks vivid storytelling creates a gripping atmosphere, reminiscent of a blockbuster film (one I could see Tom Cruise starring in ๐)
The supporting characters, especially Judge Conroy, are well-crafted, revealing hidden depths. A wild ride of danger, blackmail, & intrigue, this book is a gem for law thriller enthusiasts. I enjoyed this riveting legal tale, & it definitely delivered!

Review of The Intern by Michele Campbell
Another solid read from Michelle Campbell. I enjoyed this one and it was a quick read for me. My favorite thing about it was my love-hate relationship with the characters. my feelings about them, flip-flopped constantly throughout the entire book and I wasnโt sure who to like, and who to dislike. It was a great story with twist and turns and I definitely recommend it for thriller lovers.
Quick synopsis:
โจMadison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. โจโจWhen Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madisonโs quest for answers brings her deep into the judgeโs glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her? โจโจAs the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?
While this was not my favorite Michele Campbell book, it was still a solid thriller that kept me turning pages. I enjoyed the cat-and-mouse motif between the two strong female characters.
This was a great read, and delivered everything you could want in a thriller. I wasnโt sure who I could trust, and that element kept me on the edge of my seat. A great fast paced thriller that definitely holds your interest.

When I saw that Michele Campbell had dropped another book, I knew it would be on my TBR list for sure. I have read 2 of her other books and was blown away. This one did not disappoint either. I don't want to accidently give away any key moments from the book, so I'll try to keep this brief.
If you loved season 1 of How to Get Away With Murder, then this book is hands down for you! I really, really liked it but until the end of chapter 1 I was still on the fence a bit. Madison is a Harvard law student with a very promising career as a lawyer in front of her. She's young, beautiful, smart, and determined. She is hand-picked by her idol, Kathryn Conroy, to be an intern and is over the moon about it. Then she realizes she needs to come clean about a family situation that could cost her everything she's worked so hard for.
Kathryn is a federal judge with a demanding case load and a tragic personal story. She has been through a lot to get this far in her career and made some bad calls in the process. She grew up in South Boston and had a pretty rough life. She ends up under the control of some powerful people and sees Madison as the perfect means to an end.
This book is pretty fast paced and had a couple of surprises I never saw coming. Both Madison and Kathryn are strong female leads and I was here for it.
I gave this book 4 stars but only because I found myself annoyed by Madison and the way it took her a little bit longer than I would have liked to start connecting the dots and grasping the much bigger situation she was in.
I don't read many thrillers anymore because I find that they can be predictable, but this one had me on the edge of my seat. WOW. I was addicted to the story from the first chapter and did not leave my couch until I finished it. Such a page-turning, whirlwind of a story that I recommend to all thriller lovers (and even those who might not love them as much). This is a great read!
This is another great book by Michele Campbell! It offers a suspenseful tale full of juicy secrets and messy relationships. I have come to enjoy the 'dark academia' genre, and was intrigued to uncover the connections between characters and unravel the mystery. I truly cared about the characters and couldn't stop reading this one until I finished it!
An absolutely intriguing, canโt put it down read. A internship with her favourite judge is just the thing to get Madison started in her life. Who knew the twists and turns, and detours she would be facing as a result.
The dual POVs keep us in the edge of our seat. Looking through both Madison and Kathrynโs eyes results in a fast-paced thriller that you should not pass up.
This felt like a show unraveling before me. I was fully invested.
Iโll admit, I was curious to see where the story was going and I went in thinking it would be much different story. I was picturing the story in my head as if it were an episode of The Rookie or some other tv drama. This book was made for television. The characters were so well done and the way everything fell into place was fascinating. I was almost stressed waiting to see how it would end. I was extremely happy with the ending.
Definitely recommend.
Thanks so much NetGalley for the ARC.
Okay so I have a lot of competing thoughts so I probably wonโt know for sure how I feel about this book until I finish this review. Iโll start by saying it was very well written, it was definitely a more โgrown upโ book than I was thinking when I read the plot. I was expecting it to be more YA and less A Good Marriage. But the writing style was excellent, as was the character development and the descriptions.
A lawyer named Madison? I felt immediately a kindred spirit โจ so it was off to a great start. But it was LONG. I just checked The Invisible Girl because itโs next to me (351ish pages) and it was 375ish pages so it was fairly close but man it felt like the longest 375 pages. I love a corrupt scheme especially in the legal system, but the โcoincidencesโ right off the bat made me roll my eyes a bit and I think that coloured my perception of the rest of the book. There were also four parts (I think) and some I was more interested in so I got bored during the judges back story parts and kept having to stop myself from skimming.
Overall, interesting storyline, great writing style but fell short on the delivery and plot points. I definitely wouldโve tightened up the storyline and cut some parts out, especially at the start with all the weird things that just happened and the reader just had to be like el oh el okay yeah 100% this makes sense but I would say worth the read, kept me fairly interested, and a legal thriller that has no dashes of YA!
This was fun and twisty but then it fell off in parts. I enjoyed the predictable nature because it felt a little dark but safe. There were great characters involved.
This book had me excited the whole time !! I love a legal thriller. It was fast paced which I love because some thrillers drag. I feel for Madison, having to make some hard decisions. But the ending was so good !!
What an intriguing legal thriller!
This is a newer to me genre, and absolutely loved how the courtroom, roles and cases were wound into the story. Also I donโt always love the multiple POVs of a story, however found it easy to read and captivating to know how each character was going to play out.
Would definitely recommend!
Thank you for the ARC!
Madison Rivera, a Harvard law student, unexpectedly secures an internship with her favorite judge, Kathryn Conroy. However, both the internship and the judge prove different from Madison's expectations, leaving her overwhelmed. The narrative, titled "The Intern," focuses more on Judge Conroy's past, with dual timelines exploring her upbringing and challenges in attaining her current position.
Despite not being my favorite from this author, the story's intriguing elements kept me engaged. I initially read digitally and switched to audio about a third of the way through, finding both formats effective. Sarah Mollo-Christensen's narration, while pleasant, might have benefited from an additional narrator.
Holy smokes! This is not my first Michele Campbell book, but it is definitely her best one yet. A young Harvard law student gets a sought-after internship at a federal court judge's office at the same time that her brother gets arrested for a federal crime. She also discovers that every level of the law in this area is corrupt and gets in the middle of a dangerous scheme in order to get her brother's case dropped. It is non-stop action and thrills. While most of the twists aren't shocking, I found that I could not put this book down. Great choice for readers who enjoy crime shows on TV; It could be described as a cross between The Wire and House of Cards (both of which I loved!)
Law student Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But they are both holding secrets and neither one knows who to trust. Can they help each other?
This was a fun, fast-paced read that I could not put down. Perfect for that rainy weekend when you don't want to get off the couch!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
As a lawyer, I enjoyed this, but had a hard time looking past the "charismatic judge". A little much for me.
