This book was perfectly spooky and gay and I loved that it was all happening under the same moon to connect all the stories

I saw BIPOC queer teen horror anthology and I was sold! I was already familiar with some of the authors which is what initially drew me to this anthology and now I have others whose work I want to check out. A fun and well-balanced collection that I ended up also listening to on audio book.

My thanks to the publisher for a eARC of "Night of the Living Queers: 13 Tales of Terror Delight" and apologies for a delayed review!

"Welcome to the Hotel Paranoia" by Vanessa Montalban - a sinking hotel becomes the local rich people party spot but "the sea gets what it wants".

"The Visitor" by Kalynn Bayron - a dead mother visits her family only on Halloween and should never be invited in.

"A Brief Intermission" by Sara Farizan - a haunted drive in movie theater hosts ghostly visitors who leave destruction in their wake.

"Guested" by Rebecca Kim Wells -asks what if your body could play host to any 'guest'? A dinosaur, a made up character, a movie star? Who would you be? And what if they wouldn't leave after the hour was up...

"Rocky Road with Caramel Drizzle" by Kosoko Jackson - a racially motivated attack in the past leaves a painful calling card to a demon who's summoned to avenge it for a cost.

"The Three Phases of Ghost Hunting" by Alex Brown - the ghost of Terrifying Bob haunts the mall for pizza, but Daisy and Iris are out to make a podcast and have a night out they won't forget.

"Nine Stops" by Trang Thanh Tran - a viral video catches the eyes of a group of friends, it makes for a disturbing message and view, but if they stop watching they'll meet their end.

"Leyla Mendoza and the Last House on the Lane" by Maya Gittelman -a haunted house's wizard is closer to the future and tied to the past.

"In You to Burn" by Em X. Liu -Luce and Harley play a game of ice and fire that comes down from stories.

"Anna" by Shelly Page - when a ghost wants to take possession to live again, all that stands in her way is the babysitter, the twin girls she's watching and her maybe girlfriend.

"Hey There, Demons" by Tara Sim - Noah accidentally summons a (hot) demon to deal with a poltergeist.

"Save Me from Myself" by Ayida Shonibar -Kali Maa leads Mona to see what she means to Nadine and Gaurav and her mother, for a price.

"Knickknack" by Ryan Douglass - a child kidnapping ghost clown leads to a mission where the kids big brother is facing his best friend as maybe more...

It's perhaps rather silly to have hoped for more happy endings than what I found within, but if I found a connection it was the blue moon of Halloween 2020 and the trope "bury your gays". I think I would have been okay with that but so many of the endings did not resolve the short story itself, instead feeling like a pause between episodes or a season cliffhanger to tune into next time.

I do hope there is a next time for a few of these!

It was interesting to see how each author chose to interpret the theme and some hit for me more than others. What's hard with an anthology is some stories are good but needed more time to develop, some are too rushed and don't have much of an impact, and some are perfect. This is a mixed bag for me, but a quick read with plenty of diversity.

A Brief Intermission was my favorite, the story fit well in the short slot and had a creepy ending. I also liked the setting of a drive-in movie theater.

Leyla Mendoza and the Last House on the Lane wasn't much of a horror story, but I loved the hopeful ending and would love this to be longer.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the copy.

A queer horror anthology is so very up my alley and I’m so glad that this one was good!

While not all of these were necessarily terrifying, there were some really strong ones and a few that were kind of emotional, too! The creepy party at the hotel one that kicked off the anthology really got the ball rolling with the rest. Hey There, Demons I also thoroughly enjoyed.

I’m glad that this book exists.

This book was not for me. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't get into it. I was disappointed that I couldn't enjoy it as much as others seem to, but I know that everyone has different tastes and preferences when it comes to literature

All of these stories had queer protagonists and were a lot of fun. loved the writing style from each; they were thrilling and creepy as heck! Perfect for Halloween.

*I received an e-arc of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I love an anthology, and I own several similar themed YA anthologies, so I was excited to read this collection. I thought some stories were stronger than others - some were better paced while others felt rushed or forced into the theme / word count. It was overall a pretty fun collection. I didn't find it super scary - but I also watch a lot of horror movies so I cannot speak to if this would work for someone who has a low tolerance of horror.

3.5 Stars

I think short stories are a struggle for me. I get invested in the narrative only for it to end. That point aside, I enjoyed the creative range. There were some standout moments, and the stories were creepy more so than horror. I love the representation but would prefer longer stories.

I am currently supporting the boycott against St. Martin’s Press until they respond to influencer’s concerns about safety, inequality, systemic issues at hand and also meet the demands of the boycott. I am looking forward to leaving an updated review for this book once the demands are met ❤️

4.5 stars. Really enjoyed a lot of these stories my favorites were: Rocky road with caramel drizzle, Nine Stops, Hey There, Demons, and Knickknack. Horror stories that didn't feel childish even though geared towards a YA audience.

A high 3 stars for me!

This was a really intriguing collection of short stories all featuring LGBTQ+ POC on Halloween and the shenanigans that ensue. It reads as a perfect YA level with a few choice F-bombs to round it out.

Each story had a unique hook and for the most part none of them relied on the same twist or plot device to further the story. The biggest downside for me was the ending for each. They ended abruptly and the short story format is just not my fave.

Very well done and I'll be looking into these authors for their longer form content.

I love when short story collections connect and this one does a great job. I loved horror and I loved the new YA horror boom. These stories as with all short story collecitons, some were a hit and some were not my favorite, but overall I felt I enjoyed the story as whole with all the stories working together. Entertaining and spooky for sure!

I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it!
