This title made me smile so much! I enjoyed the premise of this volume very much, it was like a combination of "Ancient Bride of the Magus" and "The Girl From the Other Side". I liked the relationship between Mira and the doctor, and how the two work together in the household. I loved the chapter on making star jam, I thought it was very sweet (pun intended). I also appreciated this book's depiction of anxiety and depression, and how Mira's struggles aren't necessarily something that needs to be cured, but instead, managed. Mira's highs and lows were represented well, and I appreciated the realism in her having a depressive episode after temporarily conquering her anxiety in the bookstore. While realistic, the book still manages to insert enough magic and charm to captivate the imagination of readers.
A cute start to a new series, it gives Studio Ghibil vibes of a master wizard and their young apprentice. The art style is the biggest standout, both cute and lush at times. Will continue getting this series for our younger manga readers, as it seems to be a good fit for the middle grade crowd.
Thank you to NetGalley and Yen for the review copy
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for an ARC of this title
I found that I struggled to get into this title. So much of the beginning left me confused to the point where I thought I had missed a previous volume. I read this title three times before I fully understood what was going on. I did enjoy it and thought the illustrations were beautiful but the story was too confusing for me from the start
This story has such an interesting premise. The art is absolutely beautiful and feels so magical to look at. The characters are charming and I look forward to continuing the series!
When I read the prologue I though the story was getting setting up to be amazing, the the story happened and it felt very anti-climactic. One second she's having darkness explode out of her and the next their making jam? The way the story seems to be told it's like I missed out on a lot, like there is a prequel story I should have read or something. There is a potential that we'll find out more about the FMC and we just have to wait for the story to unfold. I do really enjoy the art style though, and the middle of the story started to pick back up and gave me hope - but then the story fell off again. A lot of times I'll give a manga series a couple volumes to see what it's like before I stop reading, I think that's fair since manga are shorter than a novel - but I'm really on the fence about continuing this one. The relationship between the 2 main characters seemed a little odd or off as well, can't put my finger on it exactly.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #yenpress for an eARC of #CalltheNameoftheNightVol1 by Tama Mitsuboshi to read and review.
Call the Name of the Night by Tama Mitsuboshi - 4/5
Romance - Sci Fi & Fantasy - Comics, Graphic Novels, Manga
The cover of Call the Name of the Night stole my heart when I saw it, the illustrations are stunning and brilliant. Mira and Rei live deep in the forest where they remain determined to find a cure for Mira. Even with the fantasy aspect of the story I felt myself rooting for Mira and Rei, waiting for the illness to take a turn for the better. This is only Volume 1, so I am looking forward for more of the story to unfold.
Thank you NetGalley and Yen Press for the eARC.
I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
This was a read that left me wanting more, which I assume is the point. The story is about a girl who has an illness which causes her to call night to her and potentially harm others in the process. The story in the first volume flows fairly sporadically with little vignettes leading up to the bigger story. Each chapter gives you a snippet in to the girl's life.
The fantasy element was interesting as there is magic in this world. One of my favorite chapters is about how they make star jam together from falling stars. The main character is also a girl who is taken in by a magically doctor with the intent of treating her. It all starts out a bit slow, then builds which is my only critique. But if you like that kind of story, then this is a cute read.
The artwork is well done and easy to follow along.
The standout feature of this manga is absolutely the art. Absolutely stunning artwork throughout, to the point I was spending extra time zooming in on it. I'm curious to learn more about Mira, sure, but am much more curious about her doctor.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy of call the name of night vol. 1 by Tama Mitsuboshi. this might just be one of my new favorite manga's but I will happily wait for more of this to come out. definitely will be adding this to my store when more books come out.
I adored everything about this volume. The art is stunning. The story is beyond good. This volume gripped my attention like a vice, and I am here for it! I can't get enough. I need volume 2 right away!
A manga about a girl who can call the night into a sunny place. Apparently the place is always sunny, and this girl has an illness that calls the darkness when she's agitated. Not really clear what happened in volume one. But the graphic was good and the story looks promising.
This was a cute start to the series. In this first volume, you get a glimpse of the characters and the plot. I get the feeling that this will be a cozy manga series. Yen Press gives you a fantasy manga with a slice of life feeling. The relationship with the master and Mira reminds me of Howl and his apprentice in Howl's moving castle. The artwork is beautiful and it looks like the manga could potentially pull on some heart strings. I cannot wait to find out how this all ends.
Yen Press always does an amazing job with slice of life mangas! I am always excited to read anything from them.
Thank you NetGalley and Yen Press for providing me an ARC copy.
A cute fast manga for fans of The Girl from the Other Side. I enjoyed this storyline and look forward to more.
This manga was cute and a decent start to the series, giving us an overview of the characters, the problem, and showing us how lovely and possibly heartfelt it can be. I believe this could turn into a great cozy type of series that is just enjoyable to read and linger on.
The artwork is absolutely stunning and the story is endearing and sweet. Mira has a magic problem that stems from a human problem and is being cared for by Rei, a magical physician. It has Hat Witch Atelier vibes, though Mira is younger. This has potential to be a heartwarming series and I don't believe the antagonist-Rei's former colleague- is really needed.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing an ARC for fair review.
Similar to the beautiful and descriptive cover is the artwork inside this manga. The artwork is absolutely flawless and gorgeous. There are many descriptive scenes showcasing the world our characters live in and the magic they use. It also has two adorable shadows and their little mischievous mistakes yet everything provides an air of belonging and hope throughout the art.
This manga is about a young girl named Mira who lives with a doctor named Rei who she calls Master. Mira has an affliction to darkness and it surrounds her when she is feeling scared or anxious. Alongside her Master she aims to overcome this "illness" until one day Cartos, the Master's friend, arrives.
This story wasn't enjoyable. It was meaningful. Mira's affliction to darkness can be seen as a metaphor for depression and the premise of this book seems to revolve around embracing one's depression and worries to find the light within oneself. I think it's quite a positive yet harsh perspective, however it's different for all of us. But I do agree that one should focus on themselves and be who they want to.
The plot isn't slow but there's gradual progression. It's definitely not resolved within a few chapters but it showcases Mira's struggles and thoughts as well as the patience and support of Master Rei. I dislike Cartos and although there are individuals like that in the world, I wish they were more considerate and empathetic, instead of following their own thought process.
Overall, this manga with beautiful artwork has quite a heavy story to it. I wish we could see a bit more into Mira's past to see what may have caused her affliction with "darkness". Whether it's a metaphor for depression or a magical power, I'm glad Mira has the love and support of her parents and Master Rei to help her through it.
⭐️⭐️.5
First of all the illustrations in this manga are absolutely stunning and give the story a real whimsical feel. I adored the art style but unfortunately I didn’t feel very much when it came to the story. I’m always on the look out for manga with something a bit different than your typical romance or action story and this promised something interesting. However, I feel like I spent a lot of the story wanting more. It may be that this was a set up for the rest of the series, I just felt that with such an incredible premise I wanted a bit more to happen. All that being said I think this would be a good series for younger readers who are after something magical.
AD/PR GIFTED
Call the name of the night, Vol 1 is a fantasy manga that gives you a slice of life/Howls moving castle feel. The relationship of Master and patient reminds me so much of Howl and his apprentice. The characters are beautiful drawn and a little bit quirky. This story has a potentially sad or beautiful story of overcoming the darkness and I can't wait to find out what it ends up being.
Thank you for the Arc copy
Thank you net gallery for the advanced copy of this novel. The artwork was wonderful. The story was a little sad but did touch upon topics like bullying and abandonment. It also showed support and friendship. I would recommend.
Thank you Yen Press and NetGalley for the electronic review copy of this great book. I loved the beautiful drawings which reminded me of the Witch Hat Atelier. The story was a bit confusing in the beginning and only started making sense toward the second half of the book. Once the story started making sense — it was interesting. I’m looking forward to the next volume to see how it will continue and in which direction the story will go.
Thanks so much NetGalley and Yen Press for this beautiful manga arc!
I loved this. Mira's struggle with anxiety is touching, as I struggle with it a lot as well! I am excited to see further volumes and how she gets stronger and heals :)
