The beautiful cover drew me into this one. I would love to see more of the internal art in color as well.

This manga was at times sweet and at times sad. I loved Master Rei, though he seemed almost too kind to be true. Mira was very cute and I look forward to learning more about her "illness" (but not in a creepy way like the villain.

Bonus points for the skiapicas for being extra adorable.

I feel like it has some metaphorical themes that people will resonate with.

Call the Name of the Night reminds me of Witch Hat Atelier and Ghibli put together. It's a very cute and heartwarming series with enough darkness in it. A young girl named Mira lives with a master who's really a doctor helping her out. She is supposedly a child of the night and oozes night and sinks everything into darkness when she's anxious. Her master is trying to find a cure and at the same time we get to live with them and share their cutely mundane and ordinary days of life. We only get glimpses why Mira is the way she is and what it really means. There's so much potential in the series and it's surely interesting. I do love the pace the most though as it lullabies you into a weird tranquility.

The art looks so great, detailed and cute. The cover is very fitting too. It's very clear this is seinen and it works. There's this wonderful naivety in the story and at the same time it's sad and suffocating somehow. I really want to know what will happen in the future!

This read was very cozy! The premise is a familiar one, being a small child in the care of a master of some sort, but that's not a knock against it! This is a softer tale compared to say, "Girl from the Other Side," but it carries a similar charm of a cute child having small adventures with their guardian. It was also nice to see that our main character: 1. Actually has parents. 2. That are still alive and 3. Clearly love her, they just had to send her far away because of her strange illness. Sometimes it's just nice to have a chill time with a low-stakes series that has cute art.

If you are looking for a cozy fantasy manga, this is for you! I love the cute art that accompanies this story. I will say there is not a strong plot, but the character in this manga are so cute. The story follows Mira who summons darkness whenever she feels distressed and her physician Rei is trying to help Mira. Rei's friend does cause some thing that causes Mira's power to go booommmm but it did show us what her power was. The vibe in this manga is very low stake which I kinda loved for this manga.

Thank you netgalley and yen press for the ARC in exhcnage for a honest reveiw

“I am the light you forgot.”

Call the Name of the Night is the first volume in a new fantasy manga series. It follows Mira who suffers from a strange affliction causing her to call on darkness whenever she is in distress, and her physician, Rei, trying to find a cure. They live far away from anyone in a peaceful cottage. Then Rei’s school friend comes to stir things up.

This was such a sweet read and a great introduction to a new world. I liked the character designs and all the visuals. Though the story feels quite low-stakes so far, it could definitely become more and more exciting as the tale progresses. Or it could become the perfect comfort book. Personally, I’d love a bit more excitement in the next one, but overall an enjoyable read. I’m intrigued to see where the story goes.

Thanks so much Netgalley and Yen Press for letting me read an early copy in exchange for an honest review. Call the Name of the Night comes out on March 21.

Such a cute and cozy manga! When Mira is distressed she is able to call forth the night. This ability leads leads her to the doctor, Rei, who is trying to help her. Mira’s friends, the shadows, are absolutely adorable! Learning about her family and watching her make star jam just endears you to her. I look forward to reading more about her in the next volume. Thank you NetGalley and Yen Press for this arc!

This was a cozy, beautifully drawn manga. If you want a cozy, magical story with an adorable main character, this one is for you. There is not much plot but rather a slice of life about a girl who can summon darkness when anxious. The art was beautiful and of a style that I loved. It practically screamed magical cottage core. There is little to say about the characters since this is just the first in the series, but I am excited to see where this is going. I am excited to continue with this simple but magical, cute manga.

Hello everyone, I'm here today to review Call the Name of the Night by Tama Mitsuboshi. For full disclosure, the publisher gave me a copy for free.

This manga follows a young girl named Mira, who has an absolutely wild medical condition. She contains the essence of the Night within her. Whenever she gets anxious, night time and shadows begin to leak out of her frame, engulfing everything around her in total darkness. This dis-order leads to her being labeled as a cursed child. She is sent from her home village to a faraway country seeking treatment from the brilliant magical doctor Rei Rigel who is: extremely hot.

It's something akin to a lower stakes version of The Girl From the Other Side and I do like that chill aspect of it a good deal. The chapter where Mira and Rei are making jam out of a rainstorm of falling stars is a particular highlight. We do have a "bad guy" in the form of Cartos, who looks like he stepped right out of Genshin Impact, but his big crime is performing an ethically dubious field experiment on Mira. Ultimately, I recommend this to anyone that enjoys Witch Hat Atelier, Ran and the Gray World, or Nicola.

Call the Name of the Night Vol 1 by Tama Mitsuboshi is the first book in a manga series following Mira, a girl with an illness that causes her to be engulfed in darkness when she gets really overwhelmed or has anxiety. She is currently living with a wizard/doctor named Rei to try and cure her illness.

This was so cute. I got some Studio Ghibli vibes while reading it which is not something I say lightly. The whimsical magic system was really intriguing and the adorable little shadow creatures added an extra layer of depth to Mira’s character. While I do have a lot of questions about what is going on, this was only the first volume and provided an excellent setup to the story. Having one of Rei’s “friends” introduced really helped to showcase Mira’s powers in a unique way.

This is a series I’m glad I found because I will be continuing it and buying the volumes as they are released!

Cozy and adorable art doesn't quite make up for the strange dynamic and many questions I have left by the world. This early on, filler should be answering more than it is creating questions- if it is going to insist on being there at all. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity with the title.

This manga was super cute, Mira is a young girl whose illness causes her to bring forth darkness when she is upset or distressed. She is sent to a doctor to try to help her get over her fears and learn to be happy again and control the darkness inside her,

This manga was super fluffy and the art was greatI really liked the characters designs and world building. I like the mental illness discussion in this as well. Mira is working towards being confident and getting over her anxiety so she can control her darkness. I just liked how simple and cute this was without much action. A great fantasy slice of life.

I've been really curious about this new series since I heard about Yen Press licensing it, and it's certainly interesting! I love the art and the fairly whimsical first few chapters, though it was a bit confusing/slightly disorienting from time to time. Overall, this seems like a blend of 'Witch Hat Atelier' with 'The Girl from the Other Side,' but with a fairly warm/cozy/low(ish) stakes vibe. I'll definitely be reading future volumes!

Call the Name of the Night was such a warm hug! Mira Howley is a young girl who has the power to bring on darkness. Her parents have left her in the care of a doctor named Rei Rigel who is doing his best to help Mira with her affliction. The illustrations in this manga are beautiful and the relationship between Mira and Rei is incredibly sweet. Tama Mitsuboshi, thank you so much for this heartwarming gem! This was a magical story that has left me wishing I had the next book to get lost in!

This manga is so freaking sugary sweet. Gorgeous artwork and a whimsical soft fluffy story come together to make a tooth-achingly-sweet debut of a new series. There is one chapter that feels more like a filler chapter included, but it was my favorite. You really get to see how the main characters interact with each other.

After reading only one chapter of this manga, I already wanted to have it in my hands in paperback version!
It has such a magical, sweet and delicate atmosphere that immediately transports you to this strange and enchanted world.
The protagonist lives with this strange wizard in a land where everything is linked to the stars. She seems to be there to cure what she thinks is a disease. Whenever she is afraid or anxious, darkness and night spread from her body, enveloping everything around her, including people. This obviously made her a threat or something to escape from in the eyes of others.
There are also those who threaten her safety because wants to "study" her without worrying in the least about her emotions, or the fact that she is a person.
However, the wizard will know how to protect her and will try to help her improve herself.

I definitely want to keep reading this manga! Not only are the drawings wonderful (and they immediately made me think of Howl's Moving Castle) but I would have liked to see this marvel in an anime version and in color right away! I sincerely hope it arrives in Italy sooner or later....and if it doesn't I will absolutely have to buy it in English!!!

Thanks Yen Press and Netgalley for letting me read it!

Nice and comfy, just as I'd expected from the cover. The art was really cute and the plot, while nothing too deep, was relaxing and cozy enough. These lowkey manga series with magical vibes are becoming my type of thing! I'll keep an eye out for the next volume.

The cover of this book is so so so beautiful. The illustrations on the inside of the book are very...reminiscent. That's not really the right word, BUT! The illustrations reminded me a lot of the manga books that I used to read when I was younger. It's such a cozy little start to a series and I'm really eager to find out what's going to transpire in the next book, whenever it might be coming out.

Thank you to Tama Mutsuboshi, Yen Press, and Netgalley for giving me a digital ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.

This review is currently posted to Goodreads, and will also be posted on Amazon on the publication date

Call the Name of the Night is a sweet and cozy magical manga. The main characters are Rei, a wizard doctor and Mira, a child who manifests the night when she’s anxious.

Mira has been sent to live with Rei in order to help cure her of her ‘illness’. Mira is a sweet young girl and seems to be mostly thriving in her new home. However, when she is anxious or nervous she unintentionally bleeds out the darkness of night and as such she has been labeled ‘cursed’. Rei is housing her and attempting to help her gain control of her anxieties and raising her with kindness she isn’t afforded by others.

The art style is so charming. Full of magic, flowers and a cozy cottage core like aesthetic. The story seems a bit lackadaisical, with plot and filler parts intertwined. Book one covers the prologue and 6 episodes and it’s the perfect setup to this cute story.

I would definitely recommend for manga lovers looking for a wholesome story with magical, cottage core aesthetics and a cute premise ✨

Thanks so much to Yen Press and NetGalley for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
