Part of a series featuring DCI Jane Phillips and her team. Fast paced and exciting, a good read. Plenty of twists and turns.
I really enjoy the DCI Jane Phillips books as I think her character is really well developed banter is as ever a nice counterpart for the violence of the crimes in the plot. I am personally not a fan of a main character's boss being a thorn of their side, I feel it detracts from the story line development and I feel the crimes are enough for a DCI to concentrate on. I look forward to seeing Chief Constable Kim Fox finally caught out and taken put of the equation.
I love this series the police team are great I always fall straight back I to the characters
I can't wait for the next book
Prominent figures are being murdered and DCI Jane Phillips and her team are on the case. What makes the investigation so difficult is that there are numerous people who would want them killed. Even if most of the people they sent to prison are still incarcerated, who’s to say they don’t have someone on the outside willing to do the job for them? It’s like finding a needle in a haystack; unfortunately, Jane can only jump in and start searching. Not so easy when her boss has forbidden her from working with Don Townsend, a reporter she was getting on better terms with. They had their mutually beneficial relationship going pretty well and now she’s supposed to ignore him but keep him from printing anything in retaliation? It goes about as well as you’d think!
It took me a bit to get into this story, I’m not sure why. I’ve read all of the books in this series and it’s never hard to remember where the last story left off. The author is good at subtly working in how long it has been since the previous book ended. This story didn’t focus as much on Bovalino and Jonesy’s characters, maybe their humor moves the pace along and that’s why I wasn’t immediately able to get into the story. But I still enjoyed it and can’t wait for specific side plots to be resolved (who is that mole??).
I’ll be there waiting for the next installment to hopefully find out and see what else Jane and her team are on the case with next!
A Pandora’s Box..
The ninth outing in the Detective Jane Phillips series finds the detective and team called out to investigate the killing of a retired Crown Court Judge at his Cheshire mansion. The list of suspects is unnervingly long but when a former Chief Constable is discovered killed in the same way, the team have a common link. What they don’t realise is that a Pandora’s Box is about to be unleashed. Another exciting and well written instalment with a deftly drawn cast of characters, clever plotting and a narrative bubbling with banter.

There is a new case in the Detective Jane Phillips series. It's high profile so the pressure from the demanding Chief Constable Fox is intense. I really hate the way Fox makes her spend so much time on meetings and politics when really that is her boss' role; hers is to solve the case. Her immediate boss, Carter is a saint for all he puts up with being in the middle.
The retired judge, retired chief constable, and then more are killed. The first two killings seem like they could be about someone innocent who was convicted and now is out of prison. Jane and her team track down all leads but don't seem to have any good leads or suspects.
Fox has also forbidden her to talk to a reporter Don Townsend. Jane abides by that order, until he has information for her. Apparently the judge and constable were tight and decided who they wanted to go down, reveling in their power in a time before the Internet and forensics were as well developed.
Jane's relationship with Adam is there, but more in the background with this high profile case. The team also still has a mole in the background giving out withheld information. I really enjoyed the high level stakes of the case. Jane and her team do track down the killer and figure it out, but there is a clear case for the future on the horizon with the corruption on the force. I really hope we get that story in the future.
Phillips and her crew had their hands full with this one. Their backs were against the wall with a mole in their section, dirty officers, and questionable deaths. A compelling and thrilling book, with the excitement and intrigue level at the top, making this book unputdownable.
Yet another new author for me, but having read Deadly Justice, I now have to go back to book one and start the series as I enjoyed this one so much and not because I am familiar with Manchester and the surrounding district.
Even as I read the first couple of chapters I had the feeling that this was not the first book that the characters had appeared in, but waited until the end to discover what I had missed..
Strong storyline and a good lead character.
I now the dilemma of what to read next, book one, go onto another series I am reading, or something new!
Recommend.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Justice, the ninth novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crime Unit.
When former Judge, Sir Walter Venables, is found murdered in his own home Jane and the team know that the spotlight will be on them and their investigation, but where to start with the judge having sent down hundreds of violent offenders? The a former Chief Constable, Jack Todd, is found murdered in the same way at his golf course and the same question is asked until an old rumour of sex and corruption reaches them.
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Justice, which tells an engrossing tale with a dash of humorous dialogue to lighten the diet of murder and wrongdoing. It is mostly told from Jane and her team’s point of view with interjections to describe the murders and the occasional musing from the unnamed killer. These musings make the motive more clear but not definitively so, just enough to whet the reader’s appetite and hint at revenge.
The novel held my attention throughout. It is well paced with a steady flow of reveals that keep the pages turning, but not enough to really guess at the killer’s identity or full motive. It is one of those novels where the victims are extremely unlikeable, and to a certain extent blames these unpleasant characteristics for their deaths. In some ways I can agree that they were asking for retribution or, as one character puts it, karma. Toxic masculinity is the buzzword for these traits.
I like the detectives in this series. They are dedicated professionals with some cheeky banter to keep their spirits up in trying circumstances, mostly pressure from the narcissistic Chief Constable, Kim Fox, who only cares about her reputation and the public’s perception of it. She makes a couple of false steps in this novel and Jane is aware of them so I’m looking for fireworks in the next novel. Oh goodie.
Deadly Justice is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is the latest in a series of books with DCI Jane Phillips at their heart. I had not read any of the previous books but it didn’t matter at all. I was straight into the action and didn’t feel that I was missing anything. A judge, retired police officer, and financier are all killed in the same manner with nothing seemingly linking them together. Can Jane and her team get to the bottom of who the perpetrator is and stop another murder being committed. This is a fast paced and believable story which shows the good and the bad of the police as well as how hard it can be to get the answers you need.
Having read this I am now going to go back and read the previous books as I enjoyed it so much.
A desire for justice was deep within him, he had a plan to those that had become complacent.
Bringing it about brought an unexpected pleasure for him.
The plot flows from the first page, what are the secrets that these people held.
Or did tge killer simply feel injustice was done in the careers of these men.
The author has another winner in this series that readers will enjoy.
Given ARC by Net Galley and Inkubator Publisher for my voluntary review and
my honest opinion
People meting out justice are being strangled. The murders are definitely revenge. But revenge for what?
A judge, a retired chief constable, and then oddly, a man involved in the entertainment business.
DCI Jane Phillips and her team are investigating and find the link between the murders, and only through their investigative skills, do they find the murderer.
I must say, I enjoyed this book thoroughly. I read it through the night as I was unable to sleep. It is fast paced, and kept me totally engaged all the way through.
I like the way this team works together to solve crimes. And a bonus is a strong female lead!!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book does not appear on Goodreads, as soon as it does, I will post this review there. Unfortunately, I don't have enough points to post a review on Amazon.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this eARC.
This author and series has been recommended to me several times and when this came up I was pleased to be approved for this.
Whilst this is the ninth book in the series and my first read by this author I think this can be read on it’s own. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking to read the previous books in the series when I can to catch up. I thought this book got off to a great start and I was immediately drawn into the story. I really liked Philips, Jones and the team who investigate the murder of a retired judge. When similar murders follow the team search for links between the victims. I loved the banter, friendships and working rapport the team have with each other. I found this to be a very well written, fast paced and entertaining read which flowed well and certainly piqued and held my interest all the way through. The last part of the book was a very tense and thrilling read which raced to its conclusion, with all loose ends being tied up nicely. It didn’t quite have the wow factor for me, although I certainly had empathy for the killer when I knew who it was and why. Saying that it was still a good read which definitely hit the mark for me. If you like crime, police procedurals I’d recommend this and don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Deadly Justice by OMJ Ryan is book 9 in the Jane Phillips crime thriller series and is one of those series where you really need to start from book 1, so you don't miss the great character development that happens in each book.
Jane Phillips and her team are back in rare form. They are such good characters, and I love how they interact with each other and with suspects.
Deadly Justice has a very good ending, and I did not guess the culprit. The book is fast-paced and action-packed, with good police work, a compelling story, and a satisfying mystery.
I enjoy reading these books, and the author's writing style makes me keep turning the pages and wanting more.
I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book, this series, and this author.

Another excellent novel in the series starring DCI Jane Phillips with the Major Crime team by O.M.J. Ryan. It features the investigation of a dead judge Sir Walter Venables followed closely by the murder of a retired Chief Constable Jack Todd and keeps the reader enthralled to the final pages. Simply an unputtable down book!
I've been following this series ever since the first book came out back in 2019, and it's one of those detective series that just keeps delivering entertaining after entertaining ride. Deadly Justice is already book number nine and shows no signs of slowing down... And it's without doubt yet another highly engaging and suspenseful detective thriller sequel. There is just something about this series that makes the books extremely readable, and you will find yourself flying through the pages of every single one of them.
It's true that you can technically read Deadly Justice as a stand-alone, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Why? You will be missing out on both character background and key events of the previous books, and you definitely won't understand the full impact of what Fox is like if you haven't suffered through her behavior before. Deadly Justice has some interesting developments on a personal level; especially with the shocking revelation about Fox... But otherwise it focuses mostly on the case itself. The books in this series have been great in general so far though, so they are well worth your time if you need/want to catch up.
It's good to see Jane Phillips and the rest of the team back to being business as usual, and I always have such a great time catching up with them. The banter itself is brilliant, and the dynamics between the team members is one of the reasons why this series works so well in general. The case in Deadly Justice is pretty straightforward and mostly doesn't really hit that close to home, and it is a bit of a relief to have another breather after book seven being so explosive. There are some twists and especially the final part is quite tense, but I did feel this plot wasn't as exhilarating as some of the previous books. There was more focus on just how horrible the murder victims were than on the actual crimes and investigation themselves... And I'm not entirely sure what to make of these new dynamics.
That said, there is just something about the writing style that makes it extremely easy to fly through the pages in record time. Combine that with a fast pace and a great balance between the banter and more serious topics, and you have an excellent recipe for a pageturner. It's true that I'm getting very tired having to deal with Fox, but hopefully after the most recent reveals something will be done about that in the near future... One can hope at least. Anyhow, Deadly Justice turned out to be yet another successful detective thriller sequel, and I will be looking forward to book number ten.
A very good book, it kept me going until the very end, I’m looking forward to reading what is next and hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for it, very good though
Omg! Another great read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! This book had high suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, a great who done it and great police work! The storyline was very interesting and quite sad after the facts, it was a page turner and kept me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book and series! They're well worth reading! I am loving this author! Every book so far has been amazing! Don't miss out on this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
