The flow of the grammar structure was excellent on the eyes making it an easy to finish story. Not leaving the surprises too late into the story was refreshing and engaging for me. This was a fun read that kept me guessing till the big reveal. I would recommend this for someone looking for a suburban thriller that is reliable and an easy read.
Avery is a 9 year old. Her parents would describe her as difficult, oppositional... a loner.
One day - Avery goes missing. Was she taken?
And so begins a story about a small town and the people who live there. Their secrets are slowly revealed while the detectives try to find Avery before it is too late.
Shari Lapena wrote a solid mystery - it was told in multiple points of view -which helped move the story along, without impacting the "surprise" twist.
This was a solid 3 star read -- it was fast paced, it kept you guessing and nothing felt like it was pulled out of nowhere. I would say it was ultimately a story about people, the secrets they keep and the ramifications when you're caught in a lie.
My only other Shari Lapena read was "The Couple Next Door" - and I remember feeling that it wrapped up too quickly. I will say that I really felt this was a much stronger book - it ended really well and didn't disappoint.
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC in return for an honest review.
I debated even sharing my opinion on this book because of how much I usually love Shari Lapena books. I have rated a few of her other thrillers five stars, she’s become an auto-buy author for me, so obviously I was so excited to received an eARC of her new book! I’ve heard soooo many good reviews about it but I just didn’t really like it. 😕 there were a lot of characters to keep track of, and the story wasn’t exciting enough for me to consistently remember who was who. I felt like I was going in circles most of the time. the twists were anti-climactic and the whole ‘whodunit’ of it all just wasn’t that great. and the ending made me remove half a star because of how much I disliked it 😅
thank you Penguin Random and Doubleday Canada for providing my copy in exchange for an honest review! if you’ve read this I’d love to know what you thought!
Lapena brings us another story filled with twists and turns. On the day when Nora and William end their affair, his nine year old daughter goes missing. As the search for Avery goes on, secrets and truths come to light.
Very hard to put this one down. Very unlikeable characters and many of whom have motive. I was left guessing until the very end!
This book was not for me. I found it slow going and was not a fan of the author's writing style. I also hated the main character - a 9 year old little girl. Perhaps that is the point, as her personality is enraging. I was also super disappointed with the ending. It feels unfinished. Although this author comes highly recommended I will not likely pick up another of her books.
Incredible thriller. It grabs you by the throat from the beginning and take you on a journey on a search for a missing child. However it is not all that it may seem and I loved that. The conclusion was a bit abrupt, I wanted more. But overall a good thriller.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I haven't read a Shari Lapena book in a few years and thoroughly enjoyed this one. The nice short chapters just flew by and I was totally immersed in the mystery of what happened to Avery. The characters are interesting but not really memorable except maybe Avery herself and it's basically the plot that keeps you glued to the pages. I had a bit of difficulty attributing Avery's thoughts and scheming to a 9-year-old but then again she's not like any 9-year-old I'm familiar with. The resolution was surprising but the ending left me guessing. I'd definitely recommend this book to a friend.
My thanks to Penguin Random House Canada via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.

I finished this book in 1 day! Shari Lapena books are auto-buys for me, so I was so excited to get a copy of this digital ARC. This is an excellent domestic thriller about the Wooler family trying to find their daughter Avery. Their perfect suburban neighbourhood is full of witnesses.. and liars. The characters were great, and I didn't see the twist coming. I couldn't put it down.
Right from the beginning. Lapena does an excellent job of giving us an up-close look into the neighbourhood of Stanhope. It's no different from your everyday suburban community — there are secrets on every street.
I consider Lapena to be the master of page-turners and plot twists. She is always great at humanizing her characters, making them believable while finding empathy at the centre of this domestic psychological thriller — while dropping twists and revelations that had me on the edge of my seat. Her method of intertwining a missing child plot with the adulterous lives of two characters in the neighbourhood adds contrasts even before she adds manipulation into the story, which all works seamlessly.
It's the contrast of the high stakes of finding the missing child character Avery, who is neurodiverse mixed with the upper-class neighbourhood, which had kept me glued to the pages furiously turning them into the night.
You'd be surprised to see how quickly each neighbour would turn on each other to protect their loved ones and keep their dirty secrets from coming to light when trouble comes knocking on their doors.
But nothing will prepare you for who took Avery Wooler and the reasoning behind it.
I found it to be Lapena's most gripping and shocking thriller yet!
My heart was racing with anticipation to find the answers to the question. Of who took Avery Wooler?
This book has resonated with me as my son developed behavioural problems at nine and was subsequently diagnosed with ADHD. I could sympathize with William and Erin Wooler with their struggles in trying to handle a child who is neurodiverse. It's both challenging and stressful and can fracture a marriage.
I highly recommend you read this if you are a fan of domestic psychological thrillers with short chapters, non-stop suspense, and plot twists.
A special thanks to Shari Lapena, Penguin, Random House Canada, and NetGalley for the ARC of Everybody Here is Lying in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I see so many mixed reviews of Lapena’s work, but honestly her writing is just for me! I really enjoy and binge just about everything she writes. This was no different. I was reading this late into the night and the twists! So good!
William is a doctor who is having an affair with a neighbour who is a volunteer at the hospital. Both have families to consider and the woman breaks it off. When William goes home broken-hearted, Avery, his nine-year-old daughter, is unexpectedly there. She has deemed "difficult" by everyone and does what she wants (her family lets her get away with it). She provokes William's anger, he slaps her, apologizes and then he leaves. When the family gets home, they discover that Avery is missing and contact the police. As the police investigate, they discover there are many who could have made Avery disappear ... her father, a couple older boys who live on the street, perhaps a stranger, and more.
I've read a few other books by this author and thought this one was okay. I would have enjoyed it more except I disliked Avery immensely and found her character way over the top and unrealistic ... I was hoping the kidnapper would kill her (nasty to say about a child, I know). It's written in third person perspective with a focus on wherever the action is. It ended abruptly ... I turned the page expecting a new chapter to start but there were only blank pages. As a head's up, there is swearing.
Wow! Shari Lapena is a master. I could not put this book down! This is such a simple premise - a young girl goes missing - but Lapena takes this idea and twists it. She layers in the families and possible suspects, expertly weaving the truth with the disctractions. It had me guessing, jumping from suspect to suspect. It also had that underlying creepiness factor that comes when it surprises you what humans are capable of. Finally, that ending, I mean ... it doesn't get much better than that!! Loved this read so much!!!
Thank you for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review
William and Nora were having an affair when Nora decided to end things
William and Erin are married with 2 children Michael 12 and Avery 9.
Nora married to Al and has a daughter named faith and a son Ryan
Then Avery goes missing and everyone is lying in order to save themselves. Quite the whodunnit read.
Without giving any spoilers away, do yourself a favour and pick up this book
Shari Lapena's "Everyone Here is Lying" is a riveting psychological thriller. Set in the small town of Stanhope, this novel delves into the lives of a group of seemingly ordinary individuals whose lives become intertwined after a tragic incident.
The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, each revealing just enough information to make you need to figure out what is happening. I admit that at the 30% mark I felt that something had to happen as there was no way that a whole book was going to be based on just trying to search for this child. But then we learn more about the various secrets of all the characters and then we start to see that this is about a lot more than we assumed.
I found the book to be fast-paced and engaging, effortlessly drawing me into the tangled lives of the characters. Lapena skillfully balances plot twists and reveals, ensuring that the suspense never wavers. With each chapter, the tension builds, and the stakes become higher, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.
The characters are well-developed, each harboring their own secrets and hidden agendas. Lapena cleverly manipulates the reader's perception of these characters, making it difficult to discern who can be trusted.
While the ending may leave some questions unanswered, Lapena delivers a satisfying resolution that ties up the major plot threads. I do question the age of Avery - and without giving a lot away - and if what happened seems logical for a 9 year-old, but I don't really know much about 9 year olds.
This was a nice quick read, and I think that it will be a great beach read this summer!
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC.
Thank you Penguin Random House Canada and netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
If Shari Lapena writes it. I will read it. Her first book The Couple Next Door was what introduced me to the physiological thriller genre soo many years ago.
Stanhope is a safe neighbourhood for family to raise their children. But when Avery Wooler, a child with behavioral problems goes missing just as the title suggests everyone here is lying. You only find out the truth as same pieces start connecting.
Wowzers. This book is what I imagined the books “The Push” and “None Of This Is True” is put together.
Basically the creepy factor of a child who has clear mental health psychotic tendencies with a neighbourhood that all lies.
Few things I struggled with like the ending, the autistic child parts, the lack of depth of the parents .. but it was a quick read and I know many thriller readers will binge it.
Also, personally I’m glad I don’t live near them.. and dang Avery is a character I’m not going to forget. 🤯
3.5 stars
OH MY GOD.
This was my first Shari Lapena book and it most certainly won’t be my last.
This sucked me in from the first chapter and kept me guessing until the very end. I really enjoyed the omniscient narration style of this book. Getting to see the details going on with each character really kept me engaged.
This book was AMAZING! I binged this at the lake. Kept me guessing until the end. Suspensful and packed with twists and turns. The lies!!! I couldnt get over it! Easily 5 stars! Another wonderful book by Shari Lapena! Thanks netgalley for the ARC!
Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. … so here goes…. So not my thing. Plot driven, lightweight read. Intriguing? Kind of. Hard to put down? … in a perverse way … it is. But from a character perspective, no one is remotely likeable or redeeming (which, when you look a the title is kind of apparent) .. most notably the 9 year old girl. It seemed every time I turned a page, things got darker and more uncomfortable. At the end of the day the story reinforces that every choice someone makes – as small as it might be -- could have dire consequences because you truly never know who’s involved and what kind of reaction will be generated. Overall, I’d say the book was moderately enjoyable but it’s neither a pleasant or uplifting book to read.
William and Erin and their family of two kids are your normal, average family. William is a doctor and has a great career and their kids are healthy and happy. However, William is having a secret affair with a woman on their street. When she decides to end the affair this sets off an unexpected series of events. Upon returning home he is greeted by his daughter Avery, who got sent home from school early. William gets upset and hits her and then leaves as he is scared by his actions. When he returns he finds out Avery is missing and the hunt is on to find her.
Shari Lapena is an auto buy author for me and I absolutely loved this book. I read it in one day and could not put it down. The book has so many great twists and turns that readers will absolutely love. The ending was shocking and unpredictable. I will be highly recommending this to everyone I know.
