Thank you net galley for giving me this opportunity to read this book. I have to say that it kept me reading to find out what happened.
It takes place in a small town on a quiet street.
William is a husband, father and a doctor. He has been having an affair with a hospital volunteer. He meets up with his paramour at the local motel where she decides to end their affair.
William goes home upset that their affair ended and he finds his 9 year-old daughter home from school. William loses his temper and hits his daughter.
William leaves to process his thiughts. Several hours later his daughter Avery is declared missing.
Everyone one this quiet street has something to hide and are willing to lie to the police.
This book really piqued my interest and kept me reading to find out what really happened.
I can always count on Shari Lapena for a bingeworthy thriller!
Everyone Here is Lying is a multi POV domestic thriller with a whole host of lying characters. I really appreciate how easy it was to keep track of all the characters, which says a lot when character development is at the thriller level. I was sucked in from the first page, and read it with in a day. There were a few points where I felt we were suddenly being told a lot of information, instead of show, but those points were few and far between. There wasn't a shocking twist, and I don't think this will be one that sticks with me long term, but it was certainly an enjoyable, bingeable read... perfect for the summer!
If you like Lapena, or just love the escape of a quick thriller, this one is definitely for you!
Thank You to NetGalley, Author Shari Lapena, and Penguin Random House Canada/Doubleday Canada for this ARC.
Shari Lapena has been an auto buy author for me since she wrote The Couple Next Door. I love her writing style - it is wonderfully contradictory, somehow managing to be both straightforward and complex, shocking and realistic, foreign and familiar all at the same time. I always have high expectations for her work and Everyone Here is Lying absolutely lived up to them.
If you know me, you know a multi POV domestic thriller that feels utterly believable is my favourite, which is exactly what this was. The characters felt realistic and familiar, which is essential to me. The plotting and pacing were on point, immediately absorbing you and keeping the reader guessing right up until the end.
While the twists didn’t shock me, that didn’t matter, because I absolutely loved the story and the ending. I was never sure of what was really happening but had a lot of different working theories (some were right and some were very wrong) which is the kind of novel I love to read.
As always, I really enjoyed this one! Thank you to @penguincanada for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This one is available everywhere on July 25th and I absolutely recommend picking it up.
Well worth the 336 pages to get to the last paragraph!
9-year old Avery is missing in this quiet Stanhope neighborhood after having an altercation with her father a respected doctor in the community. Dr. Wooler’s affair has just been ended by Nora a volunteer who works in his hospital and lives down the street. I struggled with the believability of Avery’s character however she is the center of the whole story.
The novel is aptly named as everyone is lying. Neighbors are gossiping and peering out windows watching everyone’s activities. A page-turner story with suspense, twists and turns and jaw dropping end!
Thank You to NetGalley, Author Shari Lapena, and Penguin Random House Canada/Doubleday Canada for my advanced copy to read and review.
This is a perfect summer thriller, it’s bingeable, a real page turner, I finished it in a day so big points to Shari for that!
However, despite being a real pageturner, the writing was very plain and the story will
Soon be forgotten.
A book for summer but not your forever shelf.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the advanced copy all opinions are my own.
4.5 STARS - Shari Lapena is one of my auto-buy, must-read thriller authors because she writes one helluva good, twisty suspense read.
Everyone Here Is Lying is set in Stanhope, a suburban community that has more than its fair share of secrets and lies. This domestic thriller has great tension and centres around a missing child. Avery Wooler is a nine-year-old little girl who goes missing after last being seen by her father - a man with little patience and a secret mistress on the side.
Filled with a group of unlikeable but interesting characters, Lapena takes her readers on a joyride of deceit, suspicious characters and an intriguing whodunnit. Readers benefits from seeing into the lives, lies and omissions of various characters in the small town and will, no doubt, suspect pretty much everyone because ev-er-y-one has secrets to hide.
I had to suspend disbelief over one character's abilities and shear wickedness, but Lapena takes us on a non-stop, wild ride with short chapters and great misdirection that will keep readers guessing and second-guessing. And despite the rather abrupt ending, this is one of my favourite books by this Toronto-based, lawyer-by-day, thriller-author-by-night who is at the top of her game.
You'll find this book in stores on July 25, 2023
Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to DoubleDay Canada for my advanced paperback ARC and finished copy of this title which were given in exchange for my honest review.
3/5 stars
EVERYONE HERE IS LYING is my second Shari Lapena novel and likely won't be my last. William Wooler's been having an affair but one afternoon his affair ends, leaving him devastated and angry. His daughter, Avery, is unexpectedly home from school when William arrives causing him to lose his temper. Avery is declared missing several hours later. This is a neighbourhood filled with lies as the investigation into Avery's whereabouts brings the truth to light.
First let me say, what a beautiful cover?! I love sunset colours on book covers - nothing draws me in quicker.
EVERYONE HERE IS LYING is a quick and easily bingeable read equipped with short chapters that keep you flipping the pages as more and more lies come to the surface as each person in this Stanhope neighbourhood are looked at under a magnifying glass during the investigation of a missing child.
This story is told in multiple perspectives, all in the third person. I thought this was a neat way at looking into the key players of this story's views and uncovering some of the lies they've been holding back. What I didn't love about this storytelling method was the choppy and jarring transitions from one character's POV to the next within the span of a sentence. A smoother segue would have been appreciated for a better flow to the story.
There are lots of characters introduced during this neighbourhood thriller, some that are more crucial to the story than others. I can't say that I liked any of the characters and felt that even the more central characters were grating, unlikeable, and one-dimensional.
Is it just me or is there an inordinate amount of sobbing that transpires in this thriller?! I feel like 90% of the characters are described to be sobbing from one scene to the next. I get that a child's disappearance is an emotional time, but why is EVERYONE crying?!
Overall, this is a story whose plot is relatively straightforward and easy to follow. The ending was relatively unexpected in how it came to be, a bit rushed, and a certain amount of suspension of belief may be required to fully believe how certain things happened. Ultimately, it's all really well explained so it's hard to fault it for it's slightly out-there conclusion.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher, Doubleday Canada, of this advanced digital copy for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions shared are my own.
This was my first Shari Lapena, and I totally get the hype! When a wholly unlikable child goes missing, the reader is put in an interesting position: who are we really rooting for? Everyone Here Is Lying tells the story of Avery's disappearance from multiple points of view, making for a fast-paced read that's hard to put down.
I admit I never heard of Shari Lapena before. Which is a pity. I also admit I didn't think at first I was going to like this book. I thought the plotting and writing style were a bit too simple.
But I got into this book. I found at the end of each chapter i had to keep on going.
Everyone Here is Lying is a thriller about a nine-year-old girl, Avery Wooler, who goes missing one day on the way from school. It's a sort of "This Town" that takes place on one street. All the major characters live on this street and all seem to be telling lies.
There are many suspects, including Avery's father, a doctor who's been having an affair with a neighbour, Nora down the street,. And her son also becomes a suspect when another neighbour phones in tip that she saw Avery get into his car.
But, as it says on the cover, everyone here is lying.
What makes this book different than standard suspense/police investigations, is that this one doesn't follow the thoughts of one leading detective. Instead the narrative switches between the points of view of all the major characters. One minute you're in Nora's mother's mind, the next a divorced woman across the street. And no one is beyond suspicion.
At first I also though that one of the characters was a bit too hard to believe, but then about half-way through, I realized something about them. And there are a few things a bit stretched; but if you're looking for a fun summer's read, this could very well be it.
This just lacked character development and creativity. It felt like a very basic thriller - sadly not her best.
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada, Doubleday Canada and NetGalley for this ARC!
Shari Lapena always writes the best thrillers and Everyone Here is lying is no exception.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I did not expect the twists and turns that happened!
4 Stars!
Dr. William Wooler has it all. He is a respected surgeon, good-looking, married to Erin and they have 2 children, Michael (12) & Avery (9). Avery has a personality disorder that controls the family leaving William frustrated. Nora Blanchard is a hospital volunteer, wife and mother. William & Nora begin a weekly affair and soon realize they want more. Nora suddenly breaks off their affair. Avery manipulates William then disappears leaving William trapped in a lie to hide their conflict and his affair.
The trauma & investigation while two detectives lead the search to find Avery is very emotionally intense. The final outcome had me cheering for Casey the interviewer.
Another great read from Shari Lapena.
I was excited to read Lapena's next work as I've been a fan of her entire backlist, and this definitely didn't disappoint! I really appreciate Lapena's writing style- it's concise with no frills, and it somehow always suits her premises perfectly. I read Everyone Here is Lying in one sitting and was invested until the very end. The only thing I'll say is that at first I had a difficult time keeping track of all the different characters and differentiating them in my head, particularly with the female neighbours, but after a while this wasn't an issue. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of domestic thrillers and Lapena fans alike.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book to read and review.
Shari Lapena is an enjoyable author for me, so I was excited to get my hands on this one early. The premise of the book is fairly straight forward; a young girl goes missing, and everyone is lying about what really happened. There are lots of characters, but they're generally easy to keep track of, and there are lots of interrelated stories that come out as people start to lie, or get caught in their lies. The way the whole neighborhood was interwoven was well done. Many people feel like Avery's character was unbelievable, but as someone who works in mental health, I found her character to be plausible - particularly in a family that is trying to placate the problem rather than address it head on.
The part where this book lost me was the ending. I was rating this a solid 4-star mystery type read, right up until the end - and the last page plummeted this one a full star for me. It felt completely rushed, almost unfinished, and it left us with a sort of cliff hanger that 1. we already knew the answer to, and 2. as a result of already knowing what happened, didn't make any sense to end that way. As a final, desperate plea about this cliff hanger; point #3. please don't make a sequel, it doesn't need to exist (i'm looking at you, 'The Family Remains').
Very gripping thriller. The title was appropriate as everyone really was lying. I did find this more plot driven than character driven, but for the most part, it worked for me as this was more of a thriller type of book, which often don't have as much character development. There were places where I would have preferred to concentrate on one person, such as Gully or Erin, rather than bouncing around to what felt like everyone's point of view.
The ending was a nice twist, and the read was enjoyable overall.
When 9 year old Avery goes missing from her home one afternoon, an entire neighborhood is turned upside down as everyone becomes a suspect and no one knows who to trust.
I thought this book was a well paced domestic thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat until I got to the end. My only real complaint is that I wanted to know what happened next! :D

Riveting!!! The type of book that once you start, you will want to stay up all night to finish!
So many twists and turns it will make your head spin!
Even though there are a lot of characters in the book, they are drawn out enough that it never gets confusing. Each character is flawed in some way, making it hard to know who is telling the truth, but, like the title suggests, "Everyone Here is Lying."
I have enjoyed Shari Lapena's other books, but I think this is my new favourite!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Penguin Random House for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
#NetGalley #EveryoneHereIsLying
My first book my this author and I was not disappointed!! I loved how suspenseful this was, will definitely read more of her work
"It's not necessarily the ones who seem different that you need to be afraid of - it's the ones who carry off normal without anyone else suspecting a thing."
Everyone Here is Lying by Shari Lapena is everything you want in a thriller: exciting, absorbing and unpredictable.
Avery Wooler has gone missing. Following an altercation with her father, the young girl disappears from a community where "things like this never happen." But with each player in the story having their own motivation, and their own complicated relationship with the truth, nothing is what it seems. Who took Avery and what else will be revealed in the search for the "truth"?
This was an exciting and thrilling read for me. While I appreciate a thriller that takes its time, I have a huge appreciation for thrillers that are quick, addictive and fast-paced. The author barely gives you room to breathe before the next twist and turn, which I loved. This pacing makes the breakneck pace at which the families involved receive and have to navigate new and sometimes conflicting information. You're on this ride together. Lapena clearly knows what she's doing and it shows.
The cast of characters will seem familiar to anyone who has lived in a small neighborhood where everyone knows everyone. They're first drawn with broad strokes but each page transforms them into three dimensional people, who may or may not be deserving of the reader's trust.
Everyone Here is Lying is full of twists and turns, and interesting characters and relationships. This is my first Shari Lapena book and this one makes me want to go back and read her whole library.
This one is out on July 25th and I highly recommend it if you're looking for your next great thriller. Thank you @PenguinRandomHouseca for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for a copy of this digital ARC.
Stanhope – a family neighbourhood, where everyone has secrets, and everyone is lying.
Opinion: Shari Lapena’s best book to date. I said it.
This book is such a suspenseful domestic thriller. The author did an excellent job of slowly introducing the characters. There ended up being a lot of characters by the end, but by slowly introducing them, it was easy to keep track of them and I didn’t find myself thinking “who’s that again?”.
This one captured my attention right from the start, and held it all the way through! It is easily bingeable and such a page-turner.
Everyone Here is Lying releases July 25th.
