This is my review of Everyone Here Is Lying.
William Wooler, a doctor, is married to Erin with two children; nine-year-old daughter, Avery and older son, Michael. But William has been having an affair with his neighbor, Nora, who is also married and has children. They meet discreetly at a local motel, where Nora ends the relationship as she is afraid of ending her marriage and hurting her family. He had been taken completely off guard.
William is devastated and upset and returns home to find his nine-year-old daughter, Avery home unexpectedly from school. He is very angry at her as she was supposed to wait for her older brother to bring her home, but she ignored the rules and walked home on her own.
A few hours later Avery is missing. The police are notified. Who took his daughter? They lived in Stanhope, a safe neighborhood for families where this didn’t happen.
William isn't the only one on his street who's hiding a lie. Soon everyone in their neighborhood is a suspect.
This was a gripping domestic thriller with a shocking twist…a real whodunit that will appeal to a wide audience. Too many suspects and no real evidence until an anonymous eyewitness emerges.
I was kept guessing throughout and changed my mind so many times…
Many thanks to the author and publisher who granted my wish on NetGalley to read this book.
I just finished Everyone here is lying by Shari Lapena and here is my review.
William Wooler is a Doctor, a family man. Respectable. His affair ends abruptly at the motel where he has been cheating on his wife for months. He is distraught when he gets home and finds his daughter, 9 year old Avery, has walked herself home after the school sent her home for bad behavior. After another encounter with his defiant daughter…he gets angry with Avery…
Hours later it is discovered that Avery is missing.
Who took Avery Wooler? The more information that comes forward, the less likely it is they will find her alive.
This book had me hooked right from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. The author weaves the kind of suspense that will keep your heart rate elevated and you won’t want to stop reading until you get to the end.
I loved the ending. I had not figured out a lick of it. I was blaming everyone before I knew the truth! This book had me tapping my kindle so hard to get to the next page. I love books I can’t figure out.
Every single person felt unreliable and I couldn’t relate to anyone but it didn’t matter. The plot was excellent and I loved how it all unfolded.
There is true genius in this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good suspenseful thriller.
5 stars, That was the best thriller I have read in a long time
Thank you @netgalley and @penguinrandomhouseca for my gifted copy
This one will keep you guessing as to who took the little girl and why. A bit of a cliff hanger at the end. I enjoyed the way in which the story is told, it is very fast paced while building the characters.
Everyone Here is Lying is the seventh book from the best-selling Canadian author Shari Lapena. As demonstrated in her previous standalone novels like The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family, the author is a master at creating suspense and shining a light on complicated family relationships. The fallout from a family spat can have ripple effects that impact a neighbourhood or even an entire community like the setting of Stanhope in Everyone Here is Lying.
All we know about Stanhope is that it is a small American town. People always say that the best thing about living in a place like this is that everybody knows you. Unfortunately, for some residents the fact they know someone makes equates to the right to judge them. Sometimes that sense of ‘knowing’ someone disregards that a person’s public persona may be very different from how they behave in private.
Two of the key characters here are William Wooler and Nora Blanchard. For several months they’ve been having an affair. They are neighbours and have taken steps to keep their relationship private. They meet at a hotel on the edge of town. Their assignations are planned on the burner phones they both carry. The book opens with their final meeting at the hotel. Much as she enjoys her time with William, Nora has an overwhelming sense of guilt that their affair will destroy her husband and children. She ends it and they agree to go their separate ways.
But today marks more than the end of a relationship. It is the beginning of a nightmare for both of them. William cannot go back to work at the hospital as he intentionally did not schedule any appointments that afternoon. He expects the family home to be empty but much to his surprise, his nine-year-old daughter Avery is home.
William discovers that she’s been sent home from choir practice for getting into trouble. This is not the first time that Avery has exhibited problematic behaviour. She has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a learning disability. When she refuses to say why she was sent home, William loses his temper and slaps her so hard he knocks her to the floor. Shameful of his anger, he checks that Avery has no major injuries and begs her forgiveness. Avery ignores him and William leaves the house in frustration.
Michael, who is Avery’s older brother, expects to meet her after his football practice to walk home from school together. She is not at the school nor at home. He phones Erin, their mother, to say that Avery is missing. Erin rushes home while Michael searches places in the neighbourhood where Avery could be playing.
When they are unable to find her, Erin phones her husband and the police. When questioned about his whereabouts that afternoon by the police, William is afraid that his affair will be exposed along with his violence. He values his reputation as the kind, handsome doctor, so he lies to them and puts his reputation above the safety of his daughter.
The longer Avery is missing, the faster you will burn through the pages to find out what has happened to her. The time span covered in the book is short, but a lot happens within a week. Once Avery is identified as missing, Lapena ratchets up the tension and pace of the book. She accomplishes this by letting the action-driven plot unfold from the perspectives of William and Nora, their families, their neighbours and the two detectives assigned to the case. This approach will give you insight into the thoughts of the various characters. You will learn which characters match their public personas and which characters have been treated unfairly because of their reputation or past actions.
The detectives have to sort through multiple lies and misdirection in order to understand Avery’s disappearance. You may need to suspend your disbelief, particularly around Avery’s ADHD diagnosis. Although she exhibits social difficulties and impulsiveness, she’s also capable of things that would seem too complex for a nine-year-old with the condition. However, this shouldn’t impact your enjoyment of Everyone Here is Lying. It has already hit the number one spot on the Irish bestseller list and is number five on The Sunday Times Bestsellers list.
The ENDING of this book!!!! SHOOK me to my CORE! This was kind of slow for me to get into but around 40-50% it really consumed my life. Even when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it and trying to figure out who it could've been or what happened. Can't wait to read more from this author - I've heard her other books are great too!
Nine year old, Avery Wooler goes missing and as the police search for her it becomes obvious that everyone involved is not what they seem. The ending was a bit abrupt, but overall this was terrific. Shari Lapena is a must read author for me. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! Shari Lapena has done it again! First, thank you to @netgalley @penguinrandomca and the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This domestic thriller had me wishing I had more free time this trip to finish it sooner. The last line basically had my mouth drop open while on the flight home! (The second picture is from LaGuardia airport where I saw this book for sale a day early!)
Avery Wooler lives in a safe neighborhood but is definitely a troublemaker at just 9 year old. She gets kicked out of an after school class and decides she doesn’t want to wait for her older brother & walks home by herself. While she’s there, her dad returns home unexpectedly when his lover decides she wants to end their affair. He’s upset and hits Avery, he leaves after he apologizes and that’s the last time Avery is seen. She’s reported missing & the police start the hunt to find her.
This is my favourite by this author so far & it’s out tomorrow (7/25)!

Shari Lapena is an auto buy author for me and like her previous books, this one did not disappoint. She gave me everything I wanted in a domestic thriller/suspense. Definitely recommend adding to your reading list!
This was a page turner. I couldn’t it put it down. There were some twists I didn’t see coming. Also it really kept me guessing who took Avery right up to when it was revealed. Solid 4/5 read! Would have been a 5 but the ending was rushed and abrupt. All in all you won’t be disappointed!
This was definitely a book with a lot of twists, I was pleasantly surprised to see none of them coming. Very well done, a nice change from other thrillers. The ending was maybe a bit abrupt and I didn't feel the resolution I was expecting, but it was good.
All of the residents on Connaught Street have secrets — affairs, secret obsessions, and family drama. When 9-year-old Avery Wooler goes missing, those secrets are brought to the light.
Everyone Here Is Lying is a mystery with so many possible suspects that the reader has a hard time determining who did it. I enjoyed how the story was written, with multiple POVs that stitch the timeline together very well.
I really enjoyed this story up until the reveal, then the wheels kind of fell off for me. I thought the reveal was underwhelming and unbelievable.
My main issue with this novel is with Avery’s character. I mean, how can a 9-year-old be that manipulative? She is just pure evil with no explanation. I was especially frustrated when it came to Avery’s interview. You’re telling me a kid knows what double-cross means? I just found it so outlandish that a child was that calculating.
I wanted so badly to enjoy this book more but Avery made that very difficult. 3/5 stars! I really enjoyed the writing style and fast-paced start of the book. I’m not giving up on Shari Lapena and look forward to reading more of their novels!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC!
This story hooked me right from the start and never wavered in its intrigue. I love an honest-to-goodness page-turner. Sheri Lapena does not disappoint in this tightly crafted story about family, neighbours and co-workers who all hide behind secrets and lies when a young girl goes missing. The stakes are high, and the clock is ticking to find 9-year-old Avery. Who is responsible? You will have to pick up this book to find out for yourself. The ending might just surprise you!
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another signature page-turner from Shari Lapena.
This was a quick read that draws you in from the first page. At first I expected to be confused by how many perspectives this was written from, but Lapena artfully skips between the characters and I wasn't able to predict how this one was going to end.
This was a good level of suspense, not a 'keeps you up at night' read, even though the main plot is quite dark and some of the characters are a little disturbing.
Lapena delivers another exciting thriller with Everyone Here Is Lying. The title holds true - how do you solve a small town crime when no one is telling the truth? With an intro that hooks you right off the bat, a host of questionable characters and unreliable narrators, and twists around every corner, Everyone Here Is Lying will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Wow, this book! I was hooked right from the beginning of this book, I couldn't put it down!
Going back and forth between the different characters left me wanting more from each of their sides. The twists truly kept me on the edge of my seat with this one, wondering what truly happened to Avery. This was definitely a binge-worthy book that I finished in 2 days! I will definitely be checking out more of Shari Lapena's books!
Thank you @netgalley and @penguinrandomca for this ARC. This book comes out on Tuesday, July 25th and I highly recommend checking it out!

Review: Everyone Here is Lying by Shari Lapena
⭐️⭐️💫
Well, we are just going to cut right to the chase. I did not like this book. The only reason it gets 2.5 stars from me, is due to the readability.
I detested the characters. The characters weren’t just unlikeable they were vapid. I generally enjoy unlikeable characters but UGH. I also am really tired of the vilifying of children as a plot point, it’s kind of gross.
The ending was a huge turn off (I hate when thrillers leave question marks), and it felt like it took a long time to get to an unsatisfying finale. I also guessed every single “twist” at the beginning.
Shari Lapena’s writing is always good, so the readability is great; she keeps pulling you along and definitely writes page turners.
I have always picked up Lapena’s books, but I think Everyone Here is Lying will be my last. While her books are thrillers, they do not thrill ME and I think that is where the problem lies. So many people have rated this highly, @wordsbetweenlines and @mamareadsyyc have stellar reviews, so I think this is definitely a case of, it’s not you… it’s me.
Do I recommend this? Yes. I’m positive that the majority of the reading population will love this book.
Thank you Penguin Random House for the advanced copy of this book!

This was a fun read, albeit not a particularly memorable one. A fast-paced story with short chapters means that I read this in a matter of a couple of days. I didn't like most of the characters, but that made the story more entertaining. Compared to some of her other books, I found that this one was lacking in some of the twists I've come to expect of this author. Shari Lapena is an automatic read for me and I'm glad I read this one too. She never disappoints!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Another great Shari Lapena story with all the twists and turns and surprises that will keep you hooked to the last page.
As with her other books I was enthralled from the first page and devoured Everyone here is Lying. The story begins with a missing child. Avery is an unlikeable child in a seemingly normal family. She lies, throws tantrums and generally disrupts everything until she gets her own way. But when she goes missing, the dominos really start to fall. Throw in an affair, a family and marriage in crisis, a neighborhood with secrets, a desire for revenge, and a lot of lies and deception, and you have Everyone here is Lying.
The main character is a very strong troubled 9 year old, Avery lives with her family the Woolers on a small street in a small town. Her Dad, a doctor, is well liked, he is also skilled at lying and is cheating on his wife. He looses his temper sometimes and slaps Avery.
The small street is alive with lies and cheating, so much so that Avery takes
advantage of what she knows and when her dad hit her hard one day she takes off from the house and nobody knows where to find her. A major search takes place. It’s amazing how many lies come out when the police begin to interview the neighbours.
A fast read guaranteed to keep you interested. I like the way it is written and will read more by this author. Well worth 4 stars.
