I freaking LOVED this book. I could not put it down and it was my first read from the author, Lizzy. I need to buy the actual book and have it on my shelf. The growth of the main character was amazing. She's relatable, I physically laughed while reading this book.
OMG I loved this book! I was hooked right from the start and couldn't put it down. Read the whole thing in one day. Amy's voice is so crystal clear and I absolutely loved her and all of her cringey, embarrassing moments. Despite her being a less-than-perfect protagonist, I never stopped rooting for her to get her revenge and get the guy. I think there is a little (or a lot) of Amy in all of us and we can all sympathize with how quickly her life goes off the rails. Love is messy, after all, and very few of us get it right without at least a few hiccups.
I also loved the MMC and how they meet and then connect. It's a great meet cute and their slow burn romance sizzles right off the page. I can absolutely picture this one as a hilarious rom com on the big screen and hope to be able to buy tickets to see it soon.
It's hard to believe this is my first Lizzy Dent book, but now I'm all in. I've officially entered my Lizzy Dent era, so excuse me while I go and download every single one of her books.
When Amy Duffy accidentally goes viral, and makes a mess of her life...she runs away. Now, two years later she is finally starting to feel like herself. This is when the storyline really picks up. The reader falls in love with the development of Amy, starting from BAMF, to wallflower, and back again. You want to cheer for her when she starts to really prioritize the most important things in her life, and takes control again.
Lizzy Dent does a great job of allowing the reader to fall in love with Amy Duffy, and feel both anger and love for her when she does both the right and wrong things. All of the characters in the novel are developed beautifully, where you really feel like you are one with the story.
After reading Lizzy Dent's previous book "The Summer Job", I couldn't wait to dive straight into The Sweetest Revenge and it didn't disappoint! The novel starts with the main character Amy trying to escape/overcome from a disastrous moment in her past. She starts afresh in London with the hopes of a new job and a fledgling romance.
This book was both funny and poignant. It gave us some laughs, but also had some very sad and bittersweet moments. Amy's character was very relatable (we've all experienced a mortifying incident in our lives!) and the depiction of Jake was so sweet. I wish we had a smidgen more chemistry between the two main characters, but overall a funny and heartwarming read!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for sending me an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I’ve read the Summer Job by Lizzy Dent and really enjoyed it, so naturally when I saw the cover and read the synopsis of her new book, The Sweetest Revenge, I couldn’t wait to dive in.
The story starts off great, it gets straight into the plot where we witness Amy going through a disastrous break up with her boyfriend Chris. Fast forward two years later, Amy has relocated to London, only half the woman she used to be due to the aftermath of her breakup. She finds herself in an unfulfilling role at a TV studio and when an opportunity for a promotion presents itself, she turns to her very attractive and famous neighbour, screenwriter Jake, for help.
I really enjoyed the story and finished it really quickly, it’s very well written. However, I must admit I wasn’t completely convinced by the chemistry between Amy and Jake. Despite the slow burn of their relationship, I wasn’t particularly invested in seeing them finally get together. Their dynamic felt more like that of best friends than lovers.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend this book to my friends, it was fun and lighthearted read.
How do you overcome shame after making a public mistake?
Lizzy Dent strikes again! 'The Sweetest Revenge' is another triumph of a rom com about learning to forgive yourself.
For two years New Yorker Amy Duffy has been a shell of herself after a video of her drunken revenge on her ex-boyfriend/boss for scuppering a television show she'd been developing for four years ends up on social media.
Now working in London producing TV trailers, she's in a rut until she discovers her new neighbour, fellow public shamee Jake Jones, possesses a screenwriting talent which starts to stoke the old fires of the ambition she once posessed. But that's not the only fire he sparks. Of course just when Amy finally starts moving forward, her vile ex has been hired as the man who stands in her way.
Like previous Dent heroines, Amy is funny, clever and relatable. Shame is a horrible feeling, and when you combine it with the internet, even someone with the strongest mental fortitude would be living at the half life Amy has been living. In Jake, Dent writes a perfect complement for Amy. He's introverted, talented as well as calm and practical, and has also experienced a life on the internet fishbowl after a stint on a reality show.
One of the book's strengths is the depiction of the television industry. Dent uses her television producing background to provide details about the industry that is both informative and entertaining. I love reading about different industries, and characters excelling or developing in their job.
'The Sweetest Revenge' is funny and heartwarming with characters you wish you could join them for a drink on their Primrose Hill rooftop. I was hooked from start to finish and I can't wait for an audiobook re-read.
Thanks to Putnam/Penguin Group and NetGalley for the ARC.
“Chris may have pissed all over my show and broken my heart, but I pissed all over his Audi.”🎬
—————————————————————
This novel was a funny and sweet book about betrayal, revenge, and budding romance.
The way that Amy got herself into a world of trouble by seeking revenge when Chris shut down her project was brilliant, and it was such a strong start to the novel. It set the scene and presented Amy’s character straight away; fearless and feisty. I really liked Amy and Jake as characters, but naturally was not as keen on Chris. Honestly, I’d do much worse if someone betrayed me the way that Chris did to Amy.
I felt there was a slight lack of chemistry between Amy and Jake, and that may have just been down to the fact that they forbade themselves from acting out on their desires until after the proposal for their new television series plan. Although I don’t doubt that the two liked one another, I would have liked to see a little bit more passion between the two. 🔥
Everything else about the novel I loved; I laughed out loud at multiple parts and thought Amy was brilliant and headstrong. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go for it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Lizzy Dent, and G.P. Putnam’s Sons (publishers) for allowing me to review this pre-release ARC.
My rating - 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love Lizzy Dent!
From the beginning I was hooked. How could he?! On repeat in my brain at the beginning of this book.
But after that there is laughter, feelings, and a the best friend group. You’ll definitely want to find your people by the end and meet up for a good patio drinking evening.
Go on this journey with Amy and experience the emotions with her in this heartwarming, funny tale.
And Jake 😍
I absolutely loved Lizzy Dent’s debut novel, the Summer Job, and now I am always eager to read her new releases. Her latest novel, The Sweetest Revenge, did not disappoint!
The characters she creates are relatable, funny, and witty. I loved how the experiences of Amy and Jake, the main characters, allowed each other to learn and grow. While I was frustrated with Amy at times, I was happy with her character development. This novel focuses more on the romance than her other two novels, but it is more in-depth than other books in the rom-com genre.
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books for the ARC!
Such a fun read - the chemistry between the two main characters was perfect, and I loved how central Amy’s career was to the plot, not to mention all of the insider-y details about series development.
I have never read a Lizzy Dent book before, but now I have a new author to enjoy! This is, quite frankly, such a funny and cute story. It has so many different elements in it, and even though some parts of it are a little racy, it overall is pretty clean (except for quite a bit of profanity). It does have a lot of drinking, which I keep finding to be common among romances with this age of protagonist, But otherwise, this isn’t an overly raunchy book that might turn some people off.
The main character, Amy, is quite hysterical. She does not think before she acts, and when alcohol is involved, this becomes quite a disaster for her. She also doesn’t think when she acts when she begins dating her boss, which leads to her drunken escapade that ends up turning into a viral video. The mental image of the revenge that she exacts upon her boss/lover is quite hysterical. There were many times in this book that I shook my head and thought, “Well, she got herself into this mess in the first place!” However, if she hadn’t, it wouldn’t be near as amusing as it was.
Later in the book, she meets a new man, Jake, with whom she decides she will keep a platonic working relationship, and this begins another fun part of the book as they get to know each other, and the tension between them just keeps rising. I really felt like this relationship was well-thought out and well-planned, and I enjoyed the chemistry between Amy and Jake. It wasn’t too hard to dislike her ex boss/lover, Chris. He deserved every bad thing that came to him. I feel like this book is going to be enjoyed by many people sitting on the beach this summer. I believe if you pick it up, you will not be disappointed.
Fun, laugh out loud romance that I found relatable! This is being compared to Bridesmaids and I can totally see it! New to me author but I'd definitely recommend and will look out for more of her books!
We love a lovable and hot mess main character. Also love a slow burn closed door romance. This book was really cute and fun to read!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance review copy in return for an honest review.
Enjoyed the characters and the slow build romance was great. Honestly, this would be a five star read for me if she didn’t overuse the f-word. It was just over the top.
Thank you to Net Galley for providing an early copy of The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent
Screenwriter Amy Duffy ends up on the bad end of a relationship break-up with her boss. When a video of her behavior makes the internet and alienates her family, she moves from New York to London to start over. She is immediately drawn to her next-door neighbor , Jake Jones, who it turns out is also in the writing business. Jake is also attempting to recover from personal demons of his own.
Their shared interest in writing leads to a collaboration that each believes will restart their careers; they also decide not to become intimately involved while working on the project. This disingenuous pact stifles what may have developed naturally between them.
Amy finds a way to enact revenge on her former boss and she may, at the same time have an opportunity to set things right in her and Jake's lives.
Thank you NetGalley and author for this ARC!
I enjoyed it a lot! Such a cute book. This book is a fun and flirty romantic comedy. I highly recommend this and will most definitely will be reading again. I recommend.
This was a fun read - thanks, NetGalley. I loved that it was about people who love TV cuz I’m one of those people, too! I dug the settings in the UK. And I loved The Incident! Hilarious. It was a lot of fun.
Are you ready for a rom-com full of exactly what the title implies, Sweet Revenge? Then this is the book for you.
Go on a life journey with Amy Duffy, starting with her most embarrassing moment. When boss turned lover Chris does the unthinkable, Amy feels she has no choice other than to run. To hide. To start over.
Through her embarrassment, Amy went from the shark to the chum of the TV production world. Little was she aware that 2 years into hiding and avoiding even her family, she would find someone to change her complete outlook on that fateful day.
There is nothing better than a climbing out of the ashes and reclaiming life along with a little love sprinkled in. This book has it all.
Amy Duffy leaves her job and family to start afresh in London after an incredibly embarrassing incident. I enjoyed the author's new perspective, portraying the main female character as originally from the United States but ending up in London. Amy's character and her passion for her career were captivating. She is highly relatable, being accomplished yet also a bit of a 'hot mess.'
Exploring the production side of television and the associated challenges was really interesting. The connection between Amy and Jake, as well as their collaboration as love interests who respect and view each other as equals, was a highlight. As expected, the author seamlessly weaves in her hilarious wit throughout the novel. Similar to her other works, I often found myself laughing while reading Amy's thoughts. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in return for my honest review
Getting drunk and taking revenge on her ex-boyfriend/boss sounded good at the time, but only led to more heartbreak for Amy. Her career is toast and her love life is obliterated. Looking for a fresh start, Amy finds herself in London. Two years later things are finally starting to look up.
The Sweetest Revenge was such a cute read. I absolutely adored Amy. Not only does she have the same name as I do, but how could you not relate to a woman who has been scorned and humiliated by someone she loved? I loved her meet-cute with Jake. Jake had his own fair share of baggage and humiliation. He was also looking for a fresh start and ended up with an unexpected friendship with Amy.
Together, Jake and Amy made quite the pair. Their banter was entertaining and I enjoyed the ease of their relationship. No good love story would be without its fair share of ups and downs and I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two characters navigate their way to happily ever after.
If you enjoy romances about a woman scorned getting her revenge and a second chance at love, you won’t want to miss The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent.
