Thank you netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for allowing me to read this book. I felt so bad for Amy in the beginning and was so happy for her to meet Jake although at times felt he deserved more from her. This book was cute but It bugged me how much she thought about her ex while spending time with Jake. I am a big fan of slow burn but wish I felt more chemistry between Amy and Jake. I also wanted to connect with the characters more than I did. I enjoyed the Beginning and ending most and felt like everything in between was a bit slow and lacking for me.
Cute rom-com about two people embarrassed on social media who end up living in the same apartment building. While Amy's humiliation is two years old and she moved to London from New York to escape and not too many people in her new life know about it. Jake on the other hand is fresh off a dating show in which he drunkenly tried to escape with humorous consequences. They become close and start to work on developing a TV show together for the station Amy works for so she can show her former boss and ex-boyfriend she has moved on and is thriving after her past in NYC. I liked this book I thought it was a quick read and I liked both of the main characters a lot I would give this 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I really enjoyed the background in the development of the show and the behind the scenes stuff you don't think about. I want to thank NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the cover, it really drew me in. Ultimately, the story fell really flat for me. In the crowded contemporary romance space, there wasn't enough substance to the story for me to feel like it was worth consuming.
Going to skip synopsis and go right for the review:
What this had going for it.... the setting. From the opening scene in New York, to the character's journeys around London/England, and a trip up to Scotland, you really feel like you're on location. Other reviewers have mentioned that the characters didn't feel as fully developed or fleshed out - I didn't necessarily feel this, but if you consider the setting a character, it definitely shines.
Akin to setting is also the descriptions of working in television and script writing. Our main character, Amy, has lost a lot of self-confidence and taken a step back in her career after her disastrous experience in New York, but watching her regain that confidence and step up for what she wants is satisfying. And to do that through the lens of television is a lot of fun.
There are some "cringe" moments. If you are deeply uncomfortable watching people embarrass themselves this may not be the book for you.
Conclusion: This is not a steamy romance with lots of sex. It's a slow burn novel about rediscovering yourself and your confidence and being able to trust again. Beautiful setting and fun shenanigans sprinkled throughout. It is a romance (technically) because there is a happy ending, and the focus is on the developing love interest.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing an arc for an honest review.
Let's start this off, by thanking Lizzy Dent & her team for the ARC. As always, I'm forever grateful. I want to start by mentioning that I love the cover! It's bright, bold, and made me curious about what the books is going to be about. The story follows Amy Duff who was a successful producer in NYC. After an embarrassing situation that's caught on video, she runs away to London and starts over again.
Two years pass, and instead of being a producer, she's making TV show trailers. When an opening opens up for producer, she decides it's time to move forward from her previous scandal. And with the help of her cute new neighbor, Jake, she's bound to make a great impression. Jake is also struggling from his own scandal, than happened much more recently than hers. What Jake really wants to do, is to become a writer, and so together they start to work on a show together. Something that she can pitch to her company. While they work together, sparks start to fly.
Overall, the book is a cute quick read with lots of laughs. While all that is true, I also felt like something was missing overall. I liked Jake as an individual, but it was a little difficult to believe that him and Amy truly had a deep connection. They had a lot of flirty banter, but not as many deep conversations. I also found it a little strange how interested she was in Jake right off the bat, and asked her best to pretend to be an agent to get his writing. I think it may have felt a little less weird if she had more conversations with Jake before doing that.
I enjoyed reading it, and I would consider it a quick summer read. 3 stars.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
Oh this one really is so sweet. If you love stories within stories this one’s also for you. Two writers working on a television show plot where you definitely feel the chemistry of the MCs but you kind of just weirdly want to know all the details about their script too.
Our main girl Amy has a lot going on: social media shaming, fleeing to another country, super hot and charismatic London flat neighbor, an ex that shows his stupid face at inopportune moments, and a killer script she’s trying to co-create with the hot neighbor.
This story really explores getting yourself out of a funk, taking ownership of your mistakes, and moving on in a multitude of ways. If you need to feel good, this one will do that for you!
3/5 🌟
Amy Duffy is a television developer that attends her cousins wedding. Too many drinks leads to too many mistakes following her boyfriend dropping a bombshell on her.
This embarrassing night leads Amy to run from her old life and venture to London to start a new life. There, Amy meets Jake and they start a friendship where they both decide to help each other rid their shame of their unfortunate life choices.
This was an easy and comical read. I enjoyed Amy, but I found myself getting second hand embarrassment for both her AND Jake. I cant help but have sympathy for them which made me start to care for them as the story continued.
Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC.
Amy Duffy, you cringey, relatable, adorable mess! I wish you were real so we could be best friends and I could tell you to get your shit together (with love of course)
If you’re into sweet romances with quirky characters who just can’t get out of their own way sometimes, you’ll love this one! (And if you’re a fan of Emily Henry, I think you’ll love Lizzy Dent too)
I accidentally stayed up way too late finishing this book last night and now I’m tired at work but it was so worth it
Thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC. I can’t wait to read Lizzy Dent’s other books!
A super fun, satisfying read!
Two years ago, Amy is an extremely successful television developer in New York who finds her career derailed when Chris, her boss — and secret boyfriend — blocks approval of a show Amy has been developing because of how it might look for his career. Her furious (and drunken) reaction to his betrayal goes viral, and Amy escapes to London, hiding in easy promo work and trying not to get connected to the worst moment of her life. She finds a kindred spirit in her new neighbor, Jake, who spectacularly flamed out as a contestant on a reality TV show, and who also happens to be a screenwriter. Amy starts to feel like she’s getting her groove back — in her career <i>and</i> her love life — when her ex shows up as the new interim head of development at her new job.
Amy is funny, smart, and talented. Jake is a perfect match — sweet, brilliant, and with a talent to match Amy’s. Chris is a smarmy, entitled jerk, and it’s a pleasure to see him get what he deserves. I especially enjoyed getting a peek into Amy and Jake’s creative process.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️ The gratification is very delayed, but the buildup is sexy
🤳👗💦🚘 For once, the viral video is both hilarious and legitimately mortifying
🎥🎬🔪🌊 I would totally watch Amy and Jake’s water-based murder show
👙🛀🥵 There is an upside to an unusually hot London summer

Thank you NetGalley for an early e-copy of The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed The Summer Job and I was so excited to see that Lizzy Dent had a new book coming out. I was even more excited when I got approved for a NetGalley ARC of it. Unfortunately, The Sweetest Revenge seemed like it was written by a different author. I struggled to get through it. Normally, I can read a book in a couple of days, but I never wanted to pick this up and ended up taking a couple of months to finish it.
Maybe I would have enjoyed the story more if the main character, Amy, had chosen some other form of revenge? But what she did was gross and beyond destructive. It made me super uncomfortable and I had a hard time liking her because of it.
It also didn’t help that there was zero chemistry between her and Jake. The romance was such a slow burn that I’m not even sure the match was ever lit. In fact, the romance could have been removed from the story entirely and not much would have changed.
If you do read this, make sure to set your expectations. Even though this is marketed as a romance, it’s more fiction. There’s very little romance and the little romance there is isn’t very fulfilling.
I wanted to love this book. I really did.
Here’s what I think went well:
I actually really loved the “rough around the edges” characters. I didn’t even mind her actions that frustrated me (in my opinion she was very self-centered) because I felt like it added to how he was frustrated with her as well. I also enjoyed how this was set up. Seeing them create the script and almost watching another story within a story was fun & unique!
Things I didn’t like:
I really did not feel ANY chemistry between the two of them. It felt disjointed and lackluster & this didn’t give me “I love him/her” vibes. For that reason, I had to give it 3 stars because the whole point of this book was to be a romance and I just wasn’t feeling the romance part. I also felt like things went unresolved. He didn’t really discuss forgiving her for not mentioning that he wrote the script during her interview or for not reading his new script that he was excited about in a timely manner.
Thank you to NetGalley & Putnam books for this complementary digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I was immediately drawn to this book by the adorable cover and intriguing premises. This book had me laughing and I felt all of the emotions the FMC, Amy, was feeling, She was lively and relatable and I loved reading about her. The setting of this book was great and the plot was interesting. That being said, I did find myself feeling bored with it at times. I am not sure if that is partially due to the fact that I had read a similar book right before this one. I think Amy and Jake's relationship started off super strong, but by the end I just didn't feel myself rooting for them or really caring what happened. I would still recommend this book and it was a good summer read.
Cute rom-com about tv production office romance gone wrong and the female MC fleeing to London in the embarrassing aftermath . Amy's drunken revenge on her gaslighting bf (who was also her boss) in the beginning of the book had me cackling. Honestly, we've all been there, maybe not to the point that it's gone viral, but still- we've been there. I always find reading about television production and show creating fascinating and enjoy seeing both the NYC and London side of it. Amy and Jake were clearly kindred spirits when they met, him in the aftermath of a truly humiliating exit from a reality show. It was sweet to see them write together, forming a friendship and then obviously starting to fall for each other. It got a little anti-climatic and flat for me towards the end- but an overall quick and fun friends-to-lovers read.
This is a heart-pounding novel that will captivate readers from start to finish. The author skillfully crafts a suspenseful narrative filled with unexpected twists and turns, ensuring an enthralling reading experience.
The story introduces readers to a diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations and secrets. As the plot unfolds, their lives become intertwined in a high-stakes game of danger and deceit. The author expertly maintains a sense of suspense throughout the book, keeping readers guessing and eagerly turning the pages to uncover the truth.
One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its ability to create a palpable atmosphere of tension and unease. The author's vivid descriptions and attention to detail transport readers into the world of the story, making them feel as if they are right alongside the characters, experiencing the thrilling events firsthand.
2.5 stars
There were some good life lessons, as well as funny moments. I really enjoyed the first part of the book, but things fell apart as the story went on. The pace was uneven, and the love story felt forced and underdeveloped. The writing was okay, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I loved the London setting, but overall, the story was a bit lackluster.
Cute romcom about the woes of an office romance gone bad and the sweetest taste of revenge. This may be my favorite one of Dent’s books yet!
Thanks NetGalley and Putnam for the digital ARC!
This was an easy, fun read. I especially liked the build-up of friendship between the two mc's. But to be honest, I wanted more proof of a love connection and didn't like how Amy handled the final climax.
Annddd speaking of the climax 😬
After that slow-burn, I was really hoping for a bit more in that department as I didn't realize it was a closed-door.
Overall, this was a sweet, friends-to-lovers romance!
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing an arc for an honest review.
This was a great, fast moving story of holding your head up high and being true to yourself. The bonds of friendship and work family can be strong. The highs and lows of making your dream come true. Love always help whether it's for your passionate life dream or the man before you! This was an uplifting, enjoyable read. I highly recommend it to everyone.
This was a cute, fun little rom-com that I think would be a great beach read. I absolutely loved reading about the television production aspect and think that the setting really helped develop the story better. Jake & Amy are so much fun together and I really enjoyed that they felt like incredibly relatable real-world characters.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for sharing this ARC!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.
I enjoyed this book enough to finish it but I wasn't totally in love with the characters. I thought it started fun, but there was too much talk about the tv show they were writing and not enough about who these characters are. I also don't think we got enough of why she was still hooked on Chris two years later since we never really saw them together.
Easy read but just not for me
