Good memoir of a Naval Officer during COVID. Also covers the rest of his career. Good leadership principles.

Thanks so much for sharing this book.
I am focused on Scuba diving and it was great to read more about other water adventures

"Listening" to the stories and lessons learned in Surft When You Can by Brett Crozier was very enjoyable. Without being too technical, he made all his Naval assignments, adventures, training, and commands come alive.

Surf When You Can follows Brett through his Naval career and the lessons he learned throughout it. I enjoyed the life lessons that he presents. They’re written in a clear way with interesting stories and examples. I would definitely recommend.

Crozier is a Navy man thru and thru. This is book about his experiences, his lessons that he learned about leadership, continuing to learn and switching specialities and the importance of taking care of your people.
Why I started this book: Wanted to learn more than the two minute news blurbs about the Navy Captain who was relieved of duty because his email about COVID conditions on his aircraft carrier was leaked to the press.
Why I finished it: Fascinating look at leadership, experience and focusing on the nearest alligator. One chapter about the COVID experience, where Crozier was very candid about his experience and how it ended his career and very discreet about the political machinations and Navy fallout that resulted. Thinking over it, he may not know all the ins and outs of the other side. I very curious to see if this book ends up on the CNO Recommended Reading list.

Years of military service and reflection allowed Brett Crozier to distill several life lessons along the way. He gives the lesson and then supports it with stories from his service. Overall, the book was ok. Nothing wrong, but nothing truly outstanding. Not upset that I read it, but there have been better executions in the genre.

Amid one of the darkest times in American history, it was a moment that captured the attention of the nation. Brett Crozier, captain of the most powerful and prestigious aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, walked off his ship for the last time while thousands of his sailors saluted and chanted his name in admiration. This remarkable moment occurred after Crozier made the decision to try to protect his sailors by pleading with his superiors for help when COVID-19 swept through the vessel. Two days later, he was relieved of command.
From his days as a fighter pilot in the Persian Gulf to enjoying his love of surfing, to commanding an aircraft carrier, Crozier's main goal was to protect those around him.
In this book, Crozier reflects on his life, career, and commitment to doing the right thing in a book that celebrates the power of kindness, the importance of teamwork, and the value of standing up for what you believe in. Through a series of captivating stories set all around the world, Crozier takes us along on the grand adventures of his extraordinary career and introduces the incredible people he met along the way.
This was an amazing autobiography of a man who loved his country and the navy. It was well written and told in vignettes of his life and service around the world. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me the privilege of reading about this man whose goal in life was kindness to others and doing right by them.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
In some ways, this book is reminiscent of In Search of Excellence, but it is much better.
Capt. Crozier uses his experiences in the Navy and in life to explore short recommendations (each a chapter title) for success. Unlike Excellence, which provides useful suggestions for business, Crozier's insights can be applied to the military, to business, and to life, in general.
In addition, the author's writing is crisp and humorous.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
