Edge of my seat the ENTIRE TIME! Ruth Ware has nailed an epic read yet again. I love her style, character development, how the plot thickens, and the smooth closure to all the threads that were woven into the story. This book has you falling in love with two of the main characters right from the beginning. As things progress there is a lot of mystery and you really are not sure who you should be hating. The reveal is something you saw coming for a bit of time but the "why" is what keeps you going. As things come to a close, you are left with some sadness over everything that had to happen to create this gripping read. But, do not think you can skip over the last few pages. Lovely surprises are waiting until the very end.
Zero Days, by Ruth Ware, is a thrill ride about a woman trying to clear her name! The book artfully mixes a bit of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a bit of The Fugitive, and a bit of Jason Bourne. Jacinda (Jack) and her husband Gabe are “pen testers”; they are hired by companies to check their security by breaking in and penetrating the building. Gabe is the computer expert and Jack does the physical work. After a challenging job, Jack arrives home late to find Gabe brutally murdered. She is the police’s only suspect. She escapes and goes on the run, trying to prove her innocence and determine who is responsible for killing her beloved husband. Jack does not know who to trust, she has little money and supplies, and she has been seriously injured during her escape. (A note to those who are squeamish, a lot of time is spent on the symptoms of her injury). Jack is quite adept at avoiding and blocking traces. The book provides an interesting window into computer crimes. Ruth Ware has created Jack as a smart, determined woman who is easy to cheer for. The pace keeps the reader hooked. This book is highly recommended!
With many thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books, Scout Press, Simon and Schuster for the ARC. My opinions are my own.
I found Ruth Ware's newest book, Zero Days, a thrilling, fast-paced read that I couldn't put down. The storyline was intriguing with the profession of the main character being someone who was paid to physically test security procedures that companies put in place for themselves. This book will be a hit for Ware's loyal followers.
This book was sent to me electronically for review by Netgalley. Thanks to the publisher and the author. This talented and gifted author has written a cannot put down novel. I have read several books by this author, and I liked them. This one is different and all about IT. That being said, despite being a good story, it is not one of my favorites. I wish the language would be left out. It does not add to the book at all. The intrigue and the mystery in this novel keeps it moving quickly. There are surprises and red herrings that keep the reader guessing.
Ruth Ware changes up her style with Zero Days for a more kinetic approach to her storytelling. While most of Ware's books retain a slow-burn storyline, Zero Days is more fast-paced and adventurous while still embodying the whodunnit nature of her mysteries. Centered around the growing world of technology and a skilled protagonist with an uncanny ability to think quick on her feet and evade capture, the fast-paced narrative keeps you engaged throughout.
Typically, I do not enjoy spy/action books but when Ruth Ware’s name is on it, I HAVE to read it. I have loved every one of Ruth Ware’s books in the past, so even though it was a little out of my comfort zone, I was excited to read Zero Days, her newest novel.
Female character Jack and her husband Gabe are hired to break into buildings and test out the security systems. That’s right, companies hire them to break into their own buildings to see what they need to improve on. It gave me very Mr. And Mrs. Smith vibes. Except one day Jack came home from work to find her husband brutally murdered. When talking to the police... it is obvious she is the prime suspect.
DISCLAIMER: this is quite different than most of Ruth Ware’s previous novels I have read. Even though I am not into spies/breaking in/running away books, this was entertaining and kept my attention. It did feel a little unrealistic to me (probably the point) so I had a tough time buying in. As I was reading, I felt this was a 3-star book, but I really enjoyed the ending, so it ended up being a 4 star for me. Zero days will hit book stands June 20, 2023.
I always get excited when Ruth Ware has a new book coming out ! So I was super happy to receive this advance copy. It was a very fast paced thriller, lots of action with a strong main woman character. I felt like this one was a little different than Ware’s usual thrillers though. It was not one of my favorite ones but I did enjoy learning about the cyber world and Jack and Gabe’s pen testing job. I was able to figure out who the murderer was pretty early on. I felt like there could have been a better twist. The book did drag on some parts. Overall I would rate 3 stars !
Thank you Netgalley and Gallery Books for my Arc copy for an honest review.
Thank you to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
I am a huge fan of Ruth Ware so when I saw that she was going to be publishing a new one, I knew I had to get my hands on it!
This action-packed thriller felt a little different from her other books but I am here for it! Well written, I found myself completely engrossed in this book and didn’t want it to come to an end! On her quest to find her husband’s killer, Jack had to overcome obstacle after obstacle and was someone you wanted to cheer for. In the end, justice was served in its own way but also left you wanting to see a continuation of Jack’s story.
Zero Days was a captivating book. A technology-based thriller which did not seem far-fetched, and kept the reader on their toes through the entire book. It was a quick read, and while it had a predictable resolution, it had enough twists and turns to keep you trying to figure out how it would end.
I had a pre-publication advanced readers copy.
Review - Jack and her husband Gabe are pen testers, and easy break into/hack into companies for a living. One night after a pen test, Jack can’t get in touch with Gabe and arrives home to find he has been murdered, and she is the number 1 suspect. From this point forward Jack is on the run and the action doesn’t stop!
I usually always enjoy Ruth Ware’s novels, and this was no exception. It’s action packed, suspenseful, and a little emotional, and I was definitely rooting for Jack to come out on top. My only complaint is how naive / dumb Jack is in the beginning. She is blindly trusting to those around her, even though she knows her husband has been killed. Even when she thought certain things were “off” she just continued on and I found myself so frustrated with her. About halfway through she seems to have an epiphany and realizes she can’t trust everyone.
If you’ve been a fan of Ruth Ware in the past definitely grab this one! Pick up if you like - suspense, hacking/technology crimes, fast-paced, survival thrillers, or books about being on the run!
Zero Days by Ruth Ware hits shelves 6/20/2023. Many thanks to NetGalley, Ruth Ware, and Gallery Books for this ARC copy in exchange for my honest review!
Zero Days by Ruth Ware
Jack and her husband, Gabe, are penetrations specialists and they love their career choice. Gabe handles the IT part of the job while Jack is the feet on the ground (or body in the ceiling), honing her strength and endurance to get her into and out of the most physically demanding situations. The entire time she has Gabe in her ear, advising her and admonishing her as she does the pen test but often pushing the line on what she can successfully get away with. The risk is part of the adrenalin rush for Jack, part of the fun of the job.
Their last assignment was going to plan until it all fell apart and Jack finds herself in trouble. Gabe usually shows their "get out of jail" card proving they were actually hired to test a company's security system but this time Jack can't get Gabe on the phone. This never happens, Gabe is always available, never leaves Jack hanging at the end of a job. When Jack gets home she finds out why Gabe never answered the phone. He's dead!
And that is when Jack really sent my blood pressure rocketing. It's one thing to take risks on a job where you are being paid to do what you are doing. Once Jack finds Gabe murdered, during the police investigation she realizes that she's the prime suspect. With her in the investigators' sights, they don't have a reason to look for who really murdered Gabe, especially when some very incriminating evidence is discovered. Now Jack needs to use her penetration skills and physical prowess to find out who really killed Gabe.
I can't really relate to Jack. So often she knows she shouldn't do something, then impulsively does it, and then frets about how she shouldn't have done that. Other times she freezes at the worst moments, making everything worse. In fact, Jack is really good at making things worse. I have no idea what I would do in Jack's situation but I do know I wouldn't do what she does. Still, it was interesting watching her work from my own safe spot in life. Every time I thought things couldn't get worse, they get worse.
I wish we could have seen more of Jack's sister, Hel, and her precocious 4 year old twin girls. I can see I missed out on a lot of body emission verbiage by not having kids. My gosh, how to parents do it!
Thank you to Gallery Books, Gallery/Scout Press and NetGalley for this ARC.
Ruth Ware is a favorite author for me, and I was so pleased to receive the arc for her latest novel, Zero Days. I really enjoyed this one. It had a different feel than some of her other books, but I was hooked from the very beginning. The pacing was great and the characters were interesting. As I read this, I kept seeing it play like a movie in my head. This would be a fantastic adaptation to screen. It carried with it so many emotions, and you really feel for the lead character, Jack. This was such a fast paced read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Don't miss this one!
4.25 adrenaline stars
Ruth Ware consistently delivers for me! This one is a contemporary thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Jack and her husband are security testing experts, hired by companies to find their weaknesses. The book opens as Jack is breaking into a building guided by her husband at home hacking in on the computer. When Jack finally makes it home, she discovers that her husband has been murdered.
Jack struggles to put her timeline together that evening for the police and she becomes their chief suspect. Forced to go on the run, she is determined to find her husband’s killer before they find her.
A cat-and-mouse game with lots of technology ensues as Jack races around London and escapes some near catastrophes. I loved her sister in this one.
I did predict some of the outcomes in this one, but I definitely enjoyed the thrill ride. I thought the ending was perfect too. Maybe MI6 has a new recruit?
I normally love Ruth Ware, but this one just didn’t hit home with me. The tech aspect and the characters just didn’t develop enough with me to enjoy.
One by One was the first Ware novel I found contrived, and the first one I didn't finish. So I'm pleased to be able to say that I finished Zero Days, which is pretty darn terrific.
Jack and Gabe make their living as professional hackers, hired by companies to test security measures already in place. When Gabe is murdered and Jack framed for it, she knows the police will take the easy route and not even pursue the truth. she takes off before she can be arrested and is determined to find the truth even it costs her her own life. Fast paced with lots of action, suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. Ruth Ware is one of the authors that got me really into domestic thrillers. Then The It Girl happened and it was so bad. I was afraid she had lost it. The description for this one sounded completely different than anything else she has written and it really delivered. It is a fun, light spy thriller. It reminded me of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, True Lies, and had Janet Evanovich vibes. All in all a welcome departure.
I am a huge Ruth Ware fan so was very excited to read her new book!!
What I loved about Zero Days:
1. The premise - a couple tests the security of companies - both physical and technical!
2. It was fast paced and you turned the pages quickly to see what was going to happen next!
3. Loved the title and how it worked with the format of the book!
What I wanted to be different:
1. Jack (our main character) seemed to strong to be true - both physically and emotionally.
2. Killer was obvious and that was kind of sad.
3. Wasn't my favorite of her books but still love her as an author and will look forward to reading her books in the future.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books, Gallery/Scout Press for sharing this page-turning copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Expected publication date: June 20, 2023
Always clever and erudite, Ruth Ware returns with another installment in her unputdownable run as one of today's best thriller authors. I can't recommend this book highly enough. You would think Ms. Ware would have run out of ideas or tricks up her sleeve to make her highly addictive books interesting...but let me assure you, she hasn't. I couldn't put this one down until I had read the very last page. Anyone would enjoy this novel (or any of her books), so I repeatedly recommend them to all wholeheartedly! Especially this one. In fact, I think this might be one of my favorites!! Run and get this for yourself!
This technothriller is a bit of a departure for Ware, considered by many to be a modern Agatha Christie. While the action propels the reader, rather than the twisty whodunits of Ware's previous works, Zero Days reads more like Brad Thor or the works of other modern thrillers.
