Requested this book without realizing it was number 3 in a series, but even so, I really enjoyed it and would check out the other books in the series. There was some confusing parts, which probably wouldn't have been had I read the other books, but it is what it is.
That being said Haunting Pasts is worth the read and worth checking out the authors other books!
NetGalley has been incredibly generous in providing me with an advanced copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I must say that the book has exceeded my expectations in every way. From the engaging storyline to the well-developed characters, every aspect of the book has left a lasting impression on me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a captivating read that will keep them on the edge of their seat till the very end. Thank you, NetGalley, for giving me the chance to read this book ahead of time!
This is an extraordinary series and this installment was very good. Deftly combining suspense with heartrending subject matter, the plot is well crafted.
Many thanks to the author and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Okay, I went into this not knowing it was number three in a series (it was not labeled as such on NetGalley), which may account for some of my complaints. I found it a bit hard to follow who was who and what their pasts were - which would likely be solved by reading the first two. The pacing was good and the plot kept me engaged. A solid book.
I did enjoy this read, although I wanted to know more about the previous investigation that led to this one, and I do think that it was built up a lot for a rushed ending - I enjoyed the female empowerment aspect
Mabel owns a motel and restaurant in a small town. She has become a PI and investigates murders. The town hates her but she is going to investigate again.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC and to the publisher Trevor Wiltzen.
The mystery was kind of bland. The beats were predictable and the characters were pretty unlikable for my liking. The historical fiction element didn’t really help it’s case but it did make the read rather boring and at times pulled me out of the story.
I always enjoy a good serial killer thriller. I thought this was quite suspenseful. I requested this from Net Galley not knowing it was the third book in a series which is why I rated it a 4⭐️ - I felt like I could’ve known more about Mabel (the main character) from reading the first few books. I really enjoyed it overall - this was a quick easy read with short chapters. I may consider reading the other ones now! Thanks NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this!
This book was a fantastic read. I was a bit confused in the beginning and it took a couple of chapters to really get into it, however, it turned out to be a fantastic storyline and I couldn't put the book down once I started! I found this to be a real page-turner and very suspenseful. I felt as though I was in a movie. Mabel's emotions and her passion as a mom and a PI were incredible. This character had so much positivity and determination. Once I started to read, I wanted to keep reading because I wanted to know who the killer of all of those girls was. I was rooting for the justice Mabel was trying to get for all of those girls. This was an incredible book and I have already recommended this read to several co-workers and friends.
Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
A fun, entertaining serial killer mystery! I came into this one blind, but I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series to catch up on Mabel's previous cases.
I really enjoyed this story. From the first chapter it had me hooked.
I fell in love with the main character, Mabel. This strong woman runs a struggling motel and diner while raising two young boys. Unfortunately, she isn't well liked by the locals - in her search for some missing girls she uncovered a large drug ring. With that money now gone instead of being spent within the town, most towns people are not a fan of poor Mabel. Mabel restarts her search for missing girls (now cold cases) and after speaking with one of the gang members she uncovers so many clues that points to a serial killer on the loose.
This was a quick, easy read. What I liked most about this story is how it was super easy to follow. I could walk away for a few hours and when I came back it was as if I hadn't put it down. I noticed after I read it that this is #3 in the Mabel Davison series. That being said, I wasn't lost at all! Everything was explained perfectly. I would LOVE to read the other 2 in the series. Such a great read!
Book 3 of a series, didn't realize at the time. Will definitely read prior 2 books. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Unfortunately as I checked this book out I did not realise it was a part of a series- hence I did not finish. However the writing was of a high quality and the story intrigued me- I think I will definitely come back one day to read it and its counterparts!
What a great addition to the series, Mabel isn’t your ordinary business owner and friend. She is committed to solving problems by any means and she will get the job done.
Haunting Pasts was a compelling story. I did feel a tiny bit left out since I am new here. The author did a good job of making sure we were brought up to date pretty fast. It was still hard to really grasp how everyone could be this upset with someone running the crime element out of town. Still, Mabel was a strong character that I really enjoyed. She had a way with people. The story that continued here was sad but intriguing. I’d love to read the background.
This book is full of twists and turns, and the plot draws you in and doesn’t stop. This was the first book I have read by Trevor and I can't wait to go back and read the other two books in this series. Mable was such a great character. I would recommend this book if you wanting a quick mystery read.
Thank You NetGalley and Trevor Witzen Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC in advance for my honest opinion.
This book is hard to review. It’s very plot driven without much else. It lacks imagery, characterization, the things that add depth and complexity to novels. Though, the plot did drag me in. I also haven’t read the two books prior as it was marketed as being able to be read as a stand alone. Maybe these things are in the first two, but I can’t help but think they’re also lacking these elements since truly every book should have more then just plot. I do plan to try book 1 and see, but ultimately this was just an okay read for me.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The setting and main character of this book were intriguing and I would read more from the author (there are two previous books in this series). Recommended for mystery/suspense lovers. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
The fact that this was part of a series didn't deter me from reading it. If you go into this book having read nothing else in the series, be aware that there could be instances where some background would've been helpful, or you're left a little confused. However, it is not dire to read the previous books, as this is still enjoyable on its own.
I am surprised at the lower number of reviews, considering the content, it should be higher. This was an enjoyable read for me.
