When I read a book as moving and addictive as this, I always struggle to put my thoughts on paper. There is just so much going around in my head! It gave me a mixture of sadness, happiness and frustration. Moments where I wanted to reach into the book and give characters a much needed hug and others when I wanted to reach in with my fist.
Emma is such a talented writer. In every book she has written she has managed to completely pull me in and make me feel all the emotions and this book is no different. With a struggling mother of two, a broken marriage, family secrets, a 'wicked stepmother' and so much more, there were elements of the story I could relate to, and with so much going on, i'm sure many of Emmas other readers will too. It is believable, heart wrenching and absolutely brilliant!!
When you've spent your teenage years resenting the woman who's taken your late mother's place in your father's life it's hard to go back and ask for help. But in this latest heartwarming novel from the very talented Emma Robinson this is what Gabbie has to do when her life implodes.
A story of secrets, misunderstandings and resentment pulled me in from the very first page. Emma makes all her characters relatable putting the reader into the position of "what would I do" in this situation. I like to think it's a compliment to the author when I say I read this book in a day as I enjoyed it so much.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read the advance copy with no obligation to leave my review
Once I saw this on Netgalley, I requested it straight away and couldn’t wait to get started, ,luckily I had time to keep reading once I started, it’s a mixture of heartbreak and misunderstandings and just who you can rely on once life turns sour. Another five star read from Emma Robinson.
I never read books like this but so glad that I read this one. It was beautiful, moving and so heart warming. The characters were wonderful and so well developed.
This was a fantastic family which made me shed a few tears. I will definitely be recommending this drama to everyone.
It was Just wonderful have a tissue ready.
My Stepmother's Secret by Emma Robinson is another fabulous read from this not to be missed author. It is, at its core, a domestic drama that touches on themes of bullying, addiction, and the love of family.
Gabbie is travelling to her childhood home, now occupied solely by the stepmother with whom she has always had a prickly relationship. Taking her daughters away from a home they love and a father they adore seems to be the only sensible course for Gabbie, but it remains unclear as to why this might be the case. Returning to her family home brings up memories of her school days, and an alternate timeline reveals the bullying that she endured. In the here and now, Gabbie struggles to reconcile with her past while finding a way to move forward with her two daughters.
Emma Robinson has crafted a tale of a family in crisis with astuteness and sensitivity and, as always, has created a cast of characters that will find their way directly into your heart. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. This book covered some good topics: addiction, bullying in childhood and how it can effect you as a parent, etc. I did think it was a little slow, but the characters were realistic and likeable. I work with people with addictions and this book shows how addiction can cause one to spiral out of control and lose everything. Very real.
I really liked this book. This talented author has written a book that is just fun. It is a quick read with realistic characters. There are family dynamics that move the story, and there are secrets that keep the reader intrigued. The protagonist has two daughters, with problems, and a husband who is dishonest. She takes the girls to go and live in her family home with her stepmother. She has never cared for her stepmother, but she hopes it will work out. The story would make a great television movie. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the author.
