I really love this series and the characters feel like friends. These mysteries are fun and usually keep me guessing until the end. For this book, I didn't care too much for Tricia actions and how Angelica treated her. I understand getting frustrated with a family member, but this felt different. I'm not sure what it was, but this was not my favorite book of this series. I'm also not sure how I feel about the new character. I'll have to wait until the next book to see how I feel.
I really loved this series in the beginning, but it has gotten a bit stale. I still love the characters and setting but the story is lacking to me.
I have read all of the Booktown Mystery books and usually enjoy a visit with these well established characters and their universe, but A Questionable Character did not prove to be one of my better visits. The plot begins with bookstore owner Tricia and her entrepreneur sister Angelica simultaneously discovering a body and gaining an intern at the Chamber of Commerce that both sisters preside over. The intern, David, turns out to be a quirky young graduate student who aims to insert himself into Tricia's investigation and, ultimately, into her life.
While I enjoyed seeing more of the series' characters and their evolving relationships, the denouements of both main plot lines were a bit puzzling: the identity of the murderer came almost completely out of left field without much foundation and Tricia's attraction to David is also a head scratcher. She seems to be more his caretaker than a genuine love interest. Of course, one of the hallmarks of this series is Tricia's terrible taste in men, so perhaps this will play out in the next book.
I'll be looking for new entries in this series, hoping for stronger plot lines next time.
Full Disclosure--NetGalley and the publisher provided me with a digital ARC of this book. This is my honest review.
Barrett's latest installment in the Booktown series delivers as usual. A murder with lots of viable suspects and plenty of red herrings finds protagonist Tricia figuratively donning her deerstalker cap once again. Familiar characters and setting are fun to revisit and a new and unlikely friendship adds to the intrigue.
