The reclusive Ryker Matthews did not disappoint! After glimpses of him in HOW SWEET IT IS and ALL FIRED UP, I had a sneaking suspicion he'd be my favourite Matthews brother. And I was right! He instantly won me over in this hilarious meet-cute involving a grocery store mishap.
Unexpectedly gaining guardianship of her three nieces, chef Bryce is hanging on by a thread. This book truly captured the absolute chaos of parenthood. Gosh, it was fun! It's labeled as a romantic comedy, and it certainly does have its funny moments, but what really stood out to me was the soft, effortless connection between Ryker and Bryce.
After his honourable discharge from the marines, Ryker spends his time restoring vintage vehicles. I really enjoyed how the story weaved in his experience with PTSD and living with a prosthetic leg. He has certainly been through a lot, but this man exuded kindness.
Ryker might be the king of acts of service. I loved the simple ways he was there for Bryce. And Bryce was equally there for Ryker. The tenderness she shows towards him, especially in his raw, vulernable moments was so admirable.
With both their lives completely derailed, this title couldn't be more fitting. A change of plans, indeed. It was super heartwarming to see these two lower their guards and find room for love.
I love this. It show that there are so many different kinds of families out there and I love that I got to experience it in this book. This author was fantastic.
First off, thank you to Forever/Grand Central Publishing for the eArc of this title!
This started off two incredibly strong. I read the first 50% in one sitting without even trying, and I was laughing & swooning nonstop. I loved Ryker & Bryce, I thought their chemistry was great, and I found that despite not being a mother or mother-like-creature myself, I thought Bryce's guardianship situation was actually quite easy to relate to and brought a lot of humor to the story.
Things started to fall apart at about the 60% mark, when the third act conflict gets introduced. it just really felt like the author tried to throw as many miscommunication tropes at the story as humanly possible, and it strung out for ENTIRELY too long. It also got very repetitive in how it was executed, literally every time they started to communicate about important things there was a convenient interruption. I am alright with this in small doses, but it felt like it happened on every page from 60%-90%. It just really, really took me out of the story.
I appreciated the PTSD, veteran, mobility, and grief representation, as well as the picture painted of a non-traditional family after facing tragedy. I can tell that the author tried very hard to handle this with care. I just couldn't get past the romance miscommunication.
Change of Plans, by Dylan Newton, is a well-written, small-town romance. A story of Ryker and Bryce. This is the last of the series and the first I have read. I will definitely be going back and reading the others! Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher, for providing me with an ARC ebook to review.
I felt that this was the heaviest book of the series. Bryce is trying to navigate parenting her three nieces after.thr sudden death of her brother and sister-in-law. The girls are all showing their trauma in different ways. Bryce is in a custody battle with their maternal grandparents and kind of struggling to make ends meet, while keeping some of her own self identity through her work as a chef.
Ryker has PTSD and physical issues from his time as a Marine in Afghanistan. He's been almost hiding from his friends and family.
Definitely a grumpy sunshine story. Bryce and Ryker manage to bring some needed lightness to each other with their "hug emergencies" and time together.
I know it was supposed to be a romantic comedy, but everything that was an issue just sort of magically resolved in the last couple of chapters of the book without truly being fully addressed, which seemed unrealistic, but maybe readers were supposed to assume much more went on off-page. I'd rather have had a little more explanation.
Thank you to net galley and Hatchette book Group for providing me with an arc copy of Change of Plans by Dylan Newton. Before I begin I would like to know that this book may be a trigger for anyone suffering with PTSD.
This is my second book by Dylan Newton and I fell in love with the characters. The flow of the story was awesome I didn't want to put it down, Bryce is a character who has a new beginning and changes her life to help her family. '
Bryce Weatherford is taken over guardianship of her three nieces. It's been a real struggle for her and the girls. Her move to town and new job have meant a big change in her life. The girls are a handful, and they are struggling.
Ryker Mathews has returned home minus a lower leg and PTSD. He is suffering with the phantom pain in his leg. He's at the grocery store with his niece when he runs into Bryce. Bryce needs his help getting her middle niece out from under the shelves where she has gotten stuck.
Ryker seems to be there to help Bryce and she and the girls seems to help him also.
Great story of two people finding their way back into life.
Cute story. Took me a while to get into it then I was hooked. Not a fan of miscommunication but it worked for this one. Loved all the characters and the mental health rep.
Thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing), Forever for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I’ve been waiting for Ryker’s story since this series began and I was so excited to get it!
This was a sweet (but spicy) romcom about the final Matthews brother who has proven himself to be a reclusive but caring character throughout the series. Ryker is a veteran with PTSD who is struggling with reentry after an injury and amputation ended his military career. He spends most of his time holed up at his garage, until he comes to the rescue of Bryce, a chef who suddenly finds herself with custody of her three nieces after the tragic death of her brother.
Bryce is understandably struggling with her new role as guardian, she quit her job and moved cross country to be there for them and that is a lot of upheaval all at once. The girls are all struggling with the change as well, and I wanted to give every single one of them a hug.
Bryce and Ryker together were pretty damn sweet and I love how they took care of each other in different ways. I do think their romance took a backseat to their personal issues, which put this more into women’s fiction rather than romance to me, but I still enjoyed it!
It was a great ending to this series and while I’m sad it’s over, I sure did enjoy my time with these Matthews brothers.
𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘖𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴 follows Bryce, a chef and now full-time gaurdian of her nieces in the most unfortunate circumstances made barablr by a guy with a pirate hook and a Scottish accent!

Hmm... for a book I was so excited for especially cuz it was Ryker's story, I'm a bit disappointed.
I feel like we didn't get to meet Bryce at all, only the Bryce who's a gaurdian now. And I get it's a major plot of the story but it doesn't mean we couldn't have gotten to know Bryce.
This story might've deserved a place of its own but seperate from this series. I feel like Ryker deserved better. So does Bryce and the girls.

Such a cute read! The main characters, Bryce and Ryker, happened to find each other at the right moment in the right time of their lives. Serendipitous? Yes, and it was all kinds of heart warming to read how their first introduction turns into a relationship.
The story features strangers to lovers, found family (which is one of my favorite tropes), and a unique meet cute. I could have done without the third act break up with the cliched miscommunication or lack of communication plot point though. I thought that there was more potential there to feature something different rather than something overused.
Overall, I found the writing to be enjoyable and the story itself to be cute and comical. It was pleasantly lighthearted and light in angst.

When Bryce gets the call that her brother and his wife have passed away her life flips upside down when she becomes the guardian to her three nieces overnight. With this she has to uproot her life and move to the small town in NY to take over as guardian.
We see all of her bumps along the way, Including the fight with the girls grandparents on their mom’s side over who would be more fit to be the girls guardian.
With all the bumps in her road it seems like the worst time for a romance, but when grumpy Ryker is accosted by Bryce and the girls in the grocery store it’s pretty clear that it doesn’t really matter what you say about “timing” because sometimes it’s just about what’s right and your plans and “timing” don’t really matter.
I really loved the mental health rep and the message of learning to be okay to ask for help because we all need help from time to time and life is a lot easier if we let others partner with us, especially when we have a change in plans.
Thanks so much to the publisher and Dylan for my ARC of this one!
I really, really liked this one!!
Bryce recently received guardianship of her three nieces, hilarious kiddos from 5-12 who will make you cackle laughing! It’s been years since Ryker returned from war with his leg amputated just below the knee, but his life with PTSD is messy.
A chance grocery store meet-disaster changes everything.
Single guardian + dual perspective + small town + found family + PTSD & limb amputation rep!
I loved loved loved so much of this! Bryce’s character growth is wonderful. The kids are freaking hilarious! All of the pirate play was just the best. Ryker’s ability to be super goofy with the kids is swoony.
I didn’t know this is the third book in an interconnected series about siblings, but after getting glimpses of the four previous MCs, I want to read both of those books!!
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
- Small town
- Guardian/Single parent FMC
- Former Marine now mechanic MMC
- Disability rep: PTSD, limb difference (amputee)
- Small town
- Slightly open door (it's not too descriptive, but also not completely closed door!)
CW: Death of a sibling (and parents to the kids in the story), grief, PTSD with recollection of time in Afghanistan
I really enjoyed this heartwarming book! So much yes to the guardian/single parent trope. I loved Bryce; such a great character. Strong, relatable, vulnerable, and a badass chef. Clear as day why she was chosen as guardian.
Ryker, what a huge cinnamon roll hero. I loved the way he pretty much related to everyone, from his own family, to Bryce, and especially to the kids. He's been through so much, and still is daily, so his good intentions make it easy to forgive his anxiousness to open up completely. Some people might say it's miscommunication or failure to communicate, but I felt like it was done really well in this case.
It was great hanging out with the Matthews family one last time. I can't wait for what Dylan has in store next!
Thank you Forever for the ARC.
Dylan did it again! This is by far my favorite of her books. If you enjoy laughing out loud while reading, this is it. The way her characters get into trouble is definitely relatable. I really loved Ryker, he is my favorite Mathews brother. Dylan did an amazing job making her characters realistic. You can tell she spent lots of time doing research to make everyone come to life. Awesome job Dylan!!
I really liked both main characters in this book. I enjoyed following Bryce’s growth as a “mom-like creature”. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to transition from a single, carefree rising chef to guardian of three rambunctious, but still grieving little girls. She feels like she’s failing, but from the outside you can see how much she loves those girls and how hard she’s trying.
Ryker comes off as a total grump, but he’s such a cinnamon roll. My love language is acts of service, so I obviously I was VERY into that part of Ryker. I thought his backstory (veteran suffering from PTSD/amputee from an IED explosion in Afghanistan) was well done. His communication issues though…oof!
The miscommunication trope was strong in this one. I don’t hate this trope as much as others do, but I have a really hard time with it when every important conversation gets interrupted by some mishap. A 10 minute conversation would have cleared up pretty much every relationship issue they had. I also think the romance could have been a little more developed. It feels like they fell in love with each other despite not spending that much 1 on 1 time together.
Overall it was cute, but I think I prefer the first two books in the series. I’ll still be on the lookout for Dylan Newton’s next book though.
Give me a Dylan Newton novel and I will devour it in less than a day!
Change of Plans is the third novel in a series that revolves around characters Ryker and Bryce. Bryce is temporary guardian of her brother's three kiddos and trying to keep custody of them. She's a chef at a local restaurant and loves what she does. Yet, she's also searching for adventure in life. Ryker may be just the adventure she needs.
Ryker is a military veteran discharged due to injury. He's got PTSD from Afghanistan and is trying to get by through fixing cars. He isn't looking for love or any other kind of personal connection. Yet he cannot help but get closer to Bryce as the days go by. Maybe she'll be just the change of plans that he needs.
I enjoyed reading Change of Plans and adored both main characters: Bryce and Ryker. Bryce was the aunt that wasn't expecting to have three nieces under her wing. Ryker is the golden retriever character who wants to help out slowly. Everything adds up to a love story worth reading in Dylan Newton's third novel. I was able to participate in the traveling arc of this story and that made the reading experience so much more special!

If sweet, emotional and romance books that are more than just romance are your jam, then Change of Plans is perfect for you.
There was never a time in this book that I wasn't rooting for Ryker and Bryce in their personal endeavours and their romance.
It was incredible reading how Bryce transformed from a single chef into a mom of three and being with her as she went through her struggles and ultimately found Ryker to lean on and be there with her through it all.
The same can be said with Ryker - his personal growth through this book put a smile on my face and could read more books about these two.
Overall, Change of Plans is heartwarming romance full of fun characters, swoon worthy moments and small town charm.
I appreciated this author's ability to perfectly balance the humor and lighthearted scenes with complex and emotional challenges Ryker and Bryce faced. I loved how Bryce’s quirkiness shines in this story and her growth throughout the story felt authentic to any parent trying to navigate parenthood. I enjoyed how Ryker was able to overcome his demons and how the author humanized him rather than let his shortcomings define his character.
This was a good read overall. The pace at times was a little slow, but I enjoyed the characters and the themes of the story. I didn’t feel the all consuming love story, but I did enjoy the connection Ryker and Bruce shared, it was just missing a bit of chemistry for me. Thi was a great addition to the series and I enjoyed getting little updates of previous characters and the predominant role they played in this book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Forever Pub for this ARC
If you liked the movies No Reservations and Raising Helen, then I definitely recommend this to you. The premise is similar— a young woman’s (Bryce) life is turned upside down when her brother and sister-in-law unexpectedly die in a car crash and she becomes the guardian of their three kids. What is different, and what I really thought stood out and enjoyed, is that our male main character, Ryker, is a Marine vet who suffers from PTSD and is an amputee. I loved that he wasn’t placed there to save her, but rather they are both working through the challenges life throws at you and together they make it out better.
Bryce’s three nieces, June, Cecily, and Addison were so well fleshed out and multidimensional for side characters. I felt the way their grief showed and how they processed things were nuanced and honest. They were also cute, funny, and petulant like all children.
This is the third in a series but can be read as a standalone. Ryker’s family makes multiple appearances and while I didn’t feel I missed anything not knowing his brothers’ backstories, I think reading the previous books would enhance those scenes with them.
