Dylan Newton books are always the cutest romances. I am so happy to finally get to read the last book and had the BEST TIME!!!
Bryce’s life is turned upside-down when she is given guardianships of her three nieces. While mourning the loss of her brother and SIL, she has to learn how to parent and guide the girls through this difficult time. The last thing she needs is any kind of romantic entanglement when handsome and helpful Ryker appears.
Change of Plans is the third book in the Matthews Brothers series. It can be read as a stand-alone but the MCs from the other two books do make appearances throughout this one.
This book is definitely heavier on romance than it is on comedy. While there are some humorous moments I don’t think I would necessarily consider this a romcom. Overall though, I did enjoy Change of Plans. Both of the MCs have their own baggage and difficulties that they are working through and neither is openly asking for help. They do manage to find balance and comfort in each other when least expected. There is a lot of back and forth between them and some miscommunication but I think that goes with trying to understand this new period of life. I love that Ryker is the 1st to fall.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ve enjoyed this series with the Matthews brothers. This one might be the least compelling or memorable for me.
Pros:
-Ryker’s struggles are complex and real. His tough exterior, teddy bear heart was easy to root for.
-None of the conflicts were trivial misunderstands (except a short bit at the end).
-I love the nieces and the portrayal of the day-to-day struggles of being a “mom like creature”. Especially children of trauma.
-Bryce’s calm and compassionate reactions to almost everything were a joy to read.
Not my favs:
-I found this one to be a bit cheesy in its dialog and very insta-lovey.
-The grandparents are over-the-top villains in a lot of ways. They lacked nuance.
-very little plot and lots of repetitive inner dialog.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC to review!
Dylan Newton writes some of my favorite romantic comedies!! My only complaint is that I wish the characters had more of a diverse background. Other than that, Change of Plans is the perfect book to pick up this summer.
This was a very good book. I enjoyed reading it. The characters and plot kept me interested. I would read another book by this author.
I love Dylan’s writing and I the Matthew’s brothers. This book covered some heavy topics but still felt like a light and airy romcom
I don’t know why I waited too long to read this. And how come I never heard of this author!?!?
I was blown away this book. I laughed and cried. I stayed up 11am til 6;:13am reading this fantastic adorable story. I just couldn’t put it down..
Those three girls reminded me of me and my two sisters growing up. The author captured their innocence and their awesome personalities so well which you can relate to them and just want to love them forever!
I love the emergency hugs! Brilliant!
I could go on and on but you’ve got to read this!! Seriously! If you’re in the mood for a feel good story with emotions all over the places…this is it!! It will stay with you long after reading your last page.
This is book 3 of the series but can be read alone. I’m grabbing the first 2 books and will be reading Dylan Newton’s future novels!! I’m going go and rave about this book on TikTok!
I was approved to read this eARC by Forever and Netgalley. Thank you. All of my opinions are purely my own.
This is the final book in the Matthews brothers series and I’m sad it’s over! This one *might* be my favorite of the trilogy, although I have a real soft spot for Drake in the first book (How Sweet It Is).
Bryce and Ryker are both going through some major stuff and on the surface appear to have nothing in common. And yet, they form a connection and discover that accepting help from each other creates an unbreakable bond - and just might lead to more than friendship. I really enjoyed watching their slow-burn romance unfold, and my heart ached every time their fears had them backing away from each other.
What I also loved about this book was the focus on community, family, and all the different relationships we have. Both of the main characters felt a bit ostracized from their friends and family due to circumstances outside their control, but after a few well-meaning interferences, they began to feel like they belong.
This book is the icing on the cake of Newton’s romcom series and I highly recommend checking out all three books!
READ IF YOU LIKE: small town romance, cinnamon roll hero, single parent kinda, found family
PRELUDE: had the opportunity to be a part of a traveling ARC team for this for dylan newton and it was so fun getting to read alongside a group of people!
LIKES: the family vibes were top notch, loved bryce's ability to speak her mind no matter what, we must protect ryker AT ALL COSTS - his small but consistent gestures were the best, bryce and ryker's unwavering support of each other was excellently portrayed,
DISLIKES: the miscommunication trope snuck up in a few places and it drove me a lil bit bonkers. i get really frustrated by interruptions of important scenes/conversations, especially when it happens over and over, but it wasn't suuuuper overt, so it's just a small knock.
IN CONCLUSION: i hadn't read the first two in this series and there were quite a few cameos from previous books' characters, so i would prob recommend reading the series in order, BUT i wasn't confused by anything and this can still be read as a standalone. def recommend for a sweet but serious, small town romance with real cinnamon roll and family-first vibes!
I have loved all of Dylan Newton's books & couldn't wait for the 3rd installment of the Matthews Brothers trilogy. I almost feel like I would read her grocery list at this point, lol. If you enjoyed either of her previous books this one will not disappoint either but you don't have to have read the others to enjoy it. A great romance that deals with mental health, military vets and unexpected family.
🦅 Wow. What a book
This was a heavy yet a very feather like book. It has very important talking points that stress the importance of PTSD and death and the struggle of raising kids alone, BUT it was also a very funny and easy read. I literally started it two days ago and just finished it
The characters are very down to earth, perfect actions and reactions based on their ages, the plot was something new, the kids and the family and the whole town is just so incredibly fit together
I really enjoyed the back and forth banter and the exchanged dirty jokes. Ryker doing his absolute best trying to impress Bryce and taking care of the girls and going out of his way to make the girls happy was so adorable - and he thought he lost game.
These kids are so chaotic. They literally break everything they come across and it’s so funny. But there was a lot of character growth from Bryce and the girls. Especially, June and Adele and Harvey. I liked how they all had to go live else where to actually appreciate Bryce’s hard work and efforts
Bryce and Ryker are both on a healing journey. Even though they’re on different ends of the process, they’re both really courageous and strong and I think the presence in each other’s lives is what helped the fasten the healing process
I also really liked how the author highlighted the struggles of PTSD and how Ryker was dealing with his HO and radiation and the mechanics of the prosthetic leg. I like how normalized it was in the book especially around the kiddos
That hug emergency thing between them is very much needed and I will be using it🥹
That was a really great book. I honestly ate this whole book up. I’m so happy I read it 💗 I also really liked that the chili soup recipe was included in the book. I also really liked the fact that the boys’ mom wanted to start a new chapter in her life and she wanted to hand down her business to Bryce
When I was first new to NetGalley, I requested this book. I hope I didn’t disappoint the author by only just reading the book and reviewing it now
This is the third book in the Matthews brothers series. I really enjoyed this book. Bryce taking in her nieces really tugged on my heart strings. Her and Ryker’s relationship sucked me in right away. They had great chemistry and support for one another.
Thank you netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review l.
I loved the first two books in this series, so I'm not sure why I dragged my feet for so long in this one. I'm glad I finally came back to this and gave it a fair shot. I was not disappointed! Bryce and Ryker are the definition of flawed heroes. Rkyer's story of losing his leg and the recovery was so touching, and Bryce's heart to take care of her nieces is SO big. Their chemistry sizzled, and I just love these "make your own family" kind of stories. This one was a win!
Thanks to Forever and Net Galley for this advanced review.
Dylan Newton is a favorite of mine!! Her romance novels are just the best! Change of Plans had me laughing, swooning and rooting for the main characters as they danced around themselves trying to not admit their feelings. Don't wait to read this!
The virtue signaling and word policing in the first two pages was just not it. And neither was the rest of this book.
In this fun and easy read a chef is left with her three nieces. Everyone in the town falls in love with the chef and her children but one special bond is formed with a man. This fun read will bring a smile to your face and make you feel good. A definite must read for summer.
Disaster strikes for chef Bryce Weatherford when she is unexpectedly given guardianship of her 3 nieces. All 3 of the young girls are giving Bryce a run for her money and acting out. Bryce finds herself yearning for a life outside of her new
"mom life" and managing her new job.
Ryker Matthew's had his leg amputated years ago after an accident during his time in the Marines, but he is still struggling with the aftermath of his career. He numbs the pain with his vehicle restoration business, but struggles to fill the void in his lonely heart.
Ryker soon sweeps Bryce off of her feet in the middle of an aisle in the grocery store. Sparks fly, but neither of them are ready for what that entails... or is exactly the change of plans they need??
This is a beautiful, funny, heart warming story about two people struggling to fill a void and finding themselves together in the midst of a tragedy. I laughed, cried, and related to the story in so many ways. I loved this book and thought the story was so sweet and unique. Dylan has a way of taking what would otherwise be a very heavy story and making it light hearted and funny. She is forever the queen of rom coms!!
Thank you to Dylan Newton for allowing me to be on a Traveling ARC team for this book!!
Dylan Newton is a new to me author and I was wowed by Change of Plans, so much so after realizing there were two more books prior to this one I went and bought them immediately. This is not your typical single mom story, not in the least. Following the death of her beloved brother and sister in law, Bryce Weatherford finds herself appointed the guardian of her three nieces age 12, 8, and 5 and in a custody battle with her late sister in law’s parents. She is barely hanging on by a thread as all three girls present a different set of challenges when she meets Ryker Matthews in a grocery store while trying to free one of her nieces from under a shelf. Ryker is a Marine turned mechanic suffering from PTSD and an amputee as well. From the minute they meet there is a connection neither one thinks they want, but also one that is impossible to deny. This book takes readers on a journey as we watch both Bryce and Ryker face challenges in their everyday lives and deal with them with humility, humor, and sometimes tears. Together the forge a bond that turns into friendship and more all while falling in love even though they don’t want to admit it. There were so many sweet, wonderful, thought provoking, and tender moments in this book as they navigated life as best they could and learned to accept the cards the universe dealt them. I want to say more, but I don’t want to ruin this story for anyone. I highly recommend this book; it is absolutely one of my favorites of 2023 and one I know I will read again.
I always enjoy reading Dylan Newton's novels, and I would definitely recommend to fans of the previous books!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher
I wanted to love this one so badly because I ADORE the unintentional guardian trope, but this one just did not click for me :/
