This is a great cookbook about how tasty and healthy don't have to be expensive. You can have it all!
I love the way the book is set up; whenever a cookbook like this - which has a high probability of being picked up by a new cook - starts with the basics it makes me super happy. It does not assume the reader will know everything and it speaks to them in a way that is welcoming and makes you excited to learn. The pictures and the way tools and basic techniques were described were really helpful. On top of the opening chapter being really helpful and smart, there are a bunch of recipes I am excited to try. I get so bored when I get into a cooking slump, it's great to have a new set of cheap and quick dinners to try.
As a busy mom of two boys, I'm always on the lookout for recipes I can make that will be filling, healthy and that they'll actually want to eat. My 15 year old has an adventurous palate, my 8 year old not so much but I found recipes in this book that they both enjoyed.
The perfect cookbook for an adventurous younger and/or newer cook. I could imagine giving this as a gift to a new college grad, or someone getting their first apartment; add some measuring spoons and a dishtowel set and you're giving a fun and very useful gift that will truly inspire any reluctant cook!
These recipes are easy to master with easy to find ingredients making it perfect for anyone's pocketbook or skill level. Tatar starts you off with clear, easy to follow, basic recipes everyone should know like boiled eggs, pickled veg, chicken breast, etc. and then gradually raises the stakes with variations on sandwiches, wraps, and salads, then continues your cooking journey with less standard fare like easy chicken congee, homemade gnocchi, and creamy chickpea curry. In between are Tatar's own signature takes on classic fast foods like smashburgers, chicken fingers, and tacos. Beans, tofu, and vegetables do a lot of heavy lifting so this cookbook can appeal to the classic meat and veg eater as well as ethical eaters and even vegetarians or those on a more structured and limited diet. For recipes with an animal based protein, he uses chicken almost exclusively which will keep costs down and create a cookbook that has an easy appeal.
No matter your skill level, eating habits, or dietary choices, Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. by Kevin Tatar lives up to its name and will inspire you to become a home cook that will help you find inspiration and inspire others to ask "How did you make that?"
I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. It's filled with an interesting variety of recipes. And it would work well for a novice cook as well as an experienced cook.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Tasty, healthy and cheap is a cookbook for the healthy and those seeking affordable food. The book begins with Kevin explaining the basic concepts of cooking everyone should know and the utensils everyone needs . It's written an understandable way and the recipes are easy to follow .
the BEST cookbook for anyone wanting to eat delicious but healthy food. Everything looks so good and the recipes are so easy to follow. They even go over cooking basics and skills too so even beginners can follow them.
Healthy and affordable...
This was a great cookbook to have on hand for starting home cooks or if you are looking to eat healthier on the cheap. Great ideas, laid out well and with handy photos of the finished product. An essential for recent college grads and those looking to introduce healthier foods into our everyday diet. Great for fresh ideas to mix up the usual meal staples.
Recommend.
My family and I had been getting bored with our usual dinners. With the cost of most meats going up, I was unsure of trying new recipes. This gave us a way to try out new things without breaking the bank. We even have some that we will be adding to our usual rotation.
What a really good cookbook! The title pretty much says it all! The recipes all looked so good. I love that there are pictures of the recipes, for me thats an important part of any cookbook. A lot of the ingredients are ones that you probably already have on hand. I appreciate that most of the recipes are also on the healthier side and fairly simple to make!
This book was filled with wonderful pictures, concise recipes, and super easy procedures. It aligned perfectly with my tastes as a picky eater, with a nice blend of vegetarian, poultry and beef recipes. Everything was accessible, and mostly Veggie or Chicken (which you don't see a lot of in contemporary cookbooks so that made me super happy). I think any beginning budget conscious cook would love this as part of their library.
This was a super easy to read, bright and colourful book filled with great recipes.
I think this would be a great book to gift to someone who is going to university.
Thank you for the arc.
A solid cookbook that is beginner friendly, but not so basic that more advanced cooks couldn't learn from it. A nice overview of cooking terms, techniques, lots of pictures, and easy, healthy, non-intimidating recipes. I always enjoy a cookbook that has recipes that you can see yourself making, that aren't full of hard to find ingredients, and don't have 20 steps. These recipes are perfect for making after work, but are still interesting and full of flavor.
Thank you Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for the ARC!
Finally, a cookbook written by a normal person!
I really enjoyed reading all the little bits about family and inspiration along the way too.
Not all the recipes are really my thing but I can appreciate the ease of access and various degrees of skill level needed to make a lot of the dishes.
I was also very impressed with the set up of essentially you are only as good as your equipment etc. A good knife, a clean work surface and a good pan (or dish or whatever is appropriate) are key to creating anything. These things are not prohibitively expensive but I admire the "start as you mean to go on" attitude.
A little "samey" with beans, chickpeas, chicken and egg repeated a lot, but he freely admits such so who am I to complain.

A healthier recipe filled cookbook with ingredients I normally have in my kitchen? Yes please.
Gorgeous photos, great recipes I plan on trying.
Exactly as the title says, this recipe book is filled with tasty, healthy, and cheap meals. What’s even better is that almost all recipes are 1-2 servings, making this perfect for young adults who are moving out of home or going off university, or even single young professionals who are tired of their usual meal rotations and need some inspiration. The instructions are easy to follow and the ingredients lists are laid out well, with very few meals needing more than your average pantry and fridge staples. This would make a great gift or addition to your public library’s cookbook collection. Thanks NetGalley for the temporary review copy.
A fabulous cookbook! From banana pancakes, to Cajun pasta, to black bean tacos - this book has it all. What a fantastic wide range of delicious, yet simple to make recipes. It has very clear, simple and easy to follow instructions to help guide you through each recipe. I love the mouth-wateringly delicious photographs that accompany the various dishes in the book. Not only do they look scrumptious, the pictures help you know what you’re aiming for. It’s rare that a recipe book manages to achieve dishes that are delicious AND cheap, but this book absolutely smashes it. I found myself bookmarking every other page for dinner tonight. Lots of delicious ideas to get cooking straight away. Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press, and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review.
When I found Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. on NetGalley, I was beyond excited! I’ve been in such a rut planning out meals that are both flavorful and healthy.
This book delivers and then some! The photos of each recipe are colorful and beautiful. Each one makes me want to jump up and cook it immediately! I also love the simplicity of the book as well. Each recipe has fairly minimal ingredients that should be relatively easy to find. This is huge! I often see so many cookbooks with ingredients that so many struggle to find.
This cookbook has inspired so many new ideas for my family dinners. I also plan on purchasing a copy for my son, as he will be in a campus apartment his second year of college and think this book would be really valuable to him!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read Tasty. Healthy. Cheap.! I can’t wait to buy a hard copy and to recommend to all of my friends!!
These were certainly tasty, healthy, and cheap! They were so good and I can't wait to make them again
