Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. : Budget-Friendly Recipes with Exciting Flavors is a basic cookbook aimed at anyone looking for simplicity and the basics. The recipes are delicious, I have found lots that I want to try, and the structure of the book is easy to follow.. The best thing is the mouth watering pictures which is something that is so important for me. Overall a great recipe book that would make the perfect gift book for anyone just getting started with cooking.
I adore Kevin from the internet and was thrilled to see this book. It does not disappoint.
This cookbook is casual, easy, delicious. As per Kevin “This is not a fancy book!”. It’s written for those getting started on their cooking journey. I’m an experienced cook, but I still found so much value. It brings everything back down to the basics.
“No BS. Nutritious, efficient, and enjoyable food” - from cooking a straightforward chicken breast, to a fully loaded omelet, to creamy chickpea curry, to a tofu burrito bowl, homemade pesto, homemade gnocchi with peas and walnuts, to cinnamon apple crumble.
Great recipes. Straightforward. Delicious.
This is already my favourite cookbook of the year.
Thank you to Quarto for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this great book. This book provides easy, straightforward recipes that are budget friendly and flavorful. A great book for a beginner chef, I definitely recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of the book in exchange for this honest review.
One thing that stuck out to me about this cookbook is how much personality it had. The author, Kevin Tatar, is a content creator whose videos I have enjoyed whenever I happened upon them. I really enjoyed the way both the introductions and the recipes themselves felt consistent with his voice and style. The way the instructions for the recipes were written felt less formal than in most cookbooks, which I found refreshing.
I did enjoy the relaxed style of formatting recipes. But my concern is that while it may be more approachable, it may also be a little vague for inexperienced cooks. I personally had no issues, but since this book is written for newer cooks, I do think there were instructions that could have been a little more direct.
I have never tried to rate a cookbook. But, to me, this is probably a three and a half out of five. There were several recipes I really liked, but this will probably not take the place of my most reached-for cookbooks. However, I have no specific complaint, so I will round up to four stars out of five.
Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. is well-suited for its intended audience. The book is written for and marketed to young people who are on a limited budget and are perhaps just learning how to cook. I think it is a good starting place for learning to cook dishes that are tasty, (somewhat) healthy, and/or (relatively) cheap.
This is a good cookbook for the beginner cook and for those who are somewhat experienced and doesn't want to eat for a week on the same leftovers or doesn't want to go to the bother of adjusting a recipe to make a meal for one or two.
Explanations of equipment, processes and some basics along with clear instructions, the large colorful pictures make this a valuable cookbook to have at your fingertips.
I received this ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you so much.

So, you are just beginning adulting. Cooking looks so easy on TikTok. However, you find it confusing and even frustrating to cook yourself (either in your small apartment or dorm room). Enter Tasty. Healthy. Cheap., the cookbook meant for you.
While I can totally see the benefit of eating food that is all of those adjectives, I’m not sure that this cookbook delivers on what its title promises. And it certainly is not for beginners. First of all, some recipes do not include measurements…because you are just supposed to know somehow, I guess. For example, the recipe for Pickled Red Onions states “combine the vinegar, water, and a generous sprinkle of salt”. Nowhere in the book does it state what the quantity or even the proportion of vinegar and water should be. Another issue is that most recipes have way more than ten ingredients, which may be tasty, but are probably not going to be cheap to buy. Finally, it is hard to tell whether the recipes are healthy as absolutely no nutritional information or allergy warnings are included.
On the positive side, the photographs are beautiful and make you hungry just looking at them. If you are a fan of the author’s TikTok and YouTube videos, Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. may be an efficient way to keep favorite recipes nearby. But for complete kitchen newbies, this is probably not the best book to use to learn to cook. 3 stars.
Thanks to Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
I am not a college student or a young adult, but I am a newly single mother of 3 kids with an incredibly significant income decrease, and right as grocery prices are skyrocketing. I have 3 teenagers who never seem to get full, and I need to feed 4 adult sized people on a lower income. When I saw Kevin's book, I liked the description since I am always looking for ways to save money on groceries without sacrificing taste. I had never heard of the Youtube channel Kwook (but I will definitely be subscribing to it now!), so the author and his cooking advice and style were completely new to me. I am impressed. I am a foodie who loves a good meal. I have marked so many recipes in Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. across all categories. They are mostly healthy (but delicious!) meals too! There is everything from banana pancakes to black bean burgers. There are also meals that start out simple and cheap that you build upon as well like the instant ramen upgrade. The desserts are always my favorite of most cookbooks and I love that in this one they are all healthier, but without sacrificing decadence. Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. will definitely be a go-to cookbook for me!
With the rising price of groceries these days I am constantly looking for budget friendly meals. This book is beautifully laid out with great photos. I love a book that starts you off with basic staples and tools needed. The section about boiled eggs and perfectly cooked rice are a godsend. Even though I admire more fine cooking sometimes I still struggle with the basics. This book would be great for my husband as well, who is just beginning to cook more. The recipes look rather simple but still feel elevated.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Well, I was hoping for and expecting an accessible cookbook, from #KWOOK, and that's what this is. I love how many recipes are vegetarian, inexpensive, and easy to make, and I really like this cookbook! This would be a great one to be a gift for young people just starting out to set up homes and kitchens, but it is also pretty good for older ladies who are tired of cooking! Will definitely be trying out recipes from this cookbook. Recommended!
While I haven't tried any of the recipes yet they look pretty simple to follow but yet not boring. There were several recipes that looked good enough to try but quite a few weren't really in my wheel house. I don't think there is a single recipe that both my kids would eat happily and therefore this cookbook isn't as useful to me. Most recipes are for servings of two so this would be ideal for a single person or a couple that is striving to eat healthier.

I can’t wait to try so many of these recipes! I love how he breaks it down in simple terms and even does easy recipes like hard boiled eggs or plain chicken breast!
The pictures make my mouth water!!!
This is such a good cookbook for beginners!
I love cooking but don’t always find the time to make a healthy meal. In this book you get to see easy recipes that are healthy and balanced for an everyday diet.
These are recipes you can easily follow and are not too expensive.
I would buy this book in store for myself or my friends/family.
This book is full of tasty sounding recipes and delicious looking photos. It's starts with a worst intro that covers key equipment, key terms (with photos!) And hints which is great - particularly if you're a novice cook.
The recipes are fairly wordy to read; I'm yet to cook one but have bookmarked a couple! I like that lots of the measurements are given in Oz or Gs, particularly as the book seems more based at an American, rather than British reader.
The book is split into chapters such as breakfast, party essentials and dinners. My biggest criticism is that the time each recipe takes is not clearly displayed on the recipes.
The pictures are great for inspiration and I look forward to cooking from it.
I am a pretty experienced home cook with many years of experience behind me and I also LOVE cook books! This book is possibly too basic for my needs BUT it is a great book. As soon as I started perusing the pages, I could see that it would make an excellent gift for a student or young adult starting out on their own, especially a male! The style of writing alongside the recipes is friendly, slightly amusing and very approachable especially towards the new and inexperienced cook. Well done, great creation.
I really enjoyed reading this one! Lot’s of recipes that I would actually make! The photos are very nice , the recipes seem easy to make and they all look very good! There are recipes for breakfast, on the go, instant classics, dinner time, pasta and bowl, party essentials, sweet and treats. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
I really liked this cookbook recipes were simple, fast and very budget friendly. This is one that definitely needs to be on everyone’s list for the new homemaker / going off o college.
3.5 stars! The pictures in this book were fabulous. I felt like a number of the recipes were a little bit intimidating for those new to cooking at home but I’m excited to make the shakshuka, roasted veggie risotto, and PB&J frozen yogurt bark. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
The recipes are ok the food photos show the recipes well, not bad for a well balanced diet. Nothing super original.
Although this book is targeted to students and young adults, it works for anyone who feels like they are relying on too much fast food, take out, and convenience foods at the expense of their health, and their wallet, but is not really confident about their abilities in the kitchen and with food shopping and meal planning. This is a terrific cookbook -- the author explains everything and gives lots of tips to boost confidence. Best of all, the recipes are focused on simple, whole foods and they look absolutely delicious. Easy, too.
5 stars
This cookbook delivers exactly what it promises…healthy affordable recipes. The layout is fantastic, the pictures wonderful. We tried the black bean burger and it was delicious. We had almost everything on hand, so that made our experience even better.
This is a great cookbook for beginners on up! I love that I can literally make most of these recipes with the staple I have on hand. I’ll definitely be getting a physical copy when it releases,
