Can I give this cookbook 10 stars?! It has delicious recipes, a great layout, easy steps to follow, and most importantly, beautiful pictures to accompany every recipe. I am a huge fan of cookbooks with pictures and this one is very nicely laid out . I am looking forward to adding this to my collection. Highly recommend since I really want to make every single meal in the book.
I really like this cookbook. It's healthy, clean eating and I will definitely try some of the recipes. For me, some of these recipes are ambitious, but I really want to try some of the salads, sweets and smoothie bowl. I could really love some of that bark right. It's a shame I don't have the energy right now, but I will definitely try some of them! Thank you Net Galley!
This is a really great cookbook for anyone wanting to eat healthier on a budget, which is especially important these days. Some of the recipes are simple, others are more trendy, like shakshuka, avocado toast and tofu noodles. This would be a great gift for younger adults starting their kitchen journey!

Tasty. Healthy. Cheap (Kevin Tatar)
You are a young adult, student or simply just someone who wants to eat and prepare delicious and nutritious food, but don’t want to spend a whole lot of time in the kitchen? Then this cookbook is for you! Written by the popular cooking content creator Kevin Tatar, this is a collection of some of his favourite recipes. Tatar (almost) always keeps an eye not just on deliciousness - although that is his primary goal - but also on the nutrition- and health-aspect. Therefore, and because he also provides us with simple and easy recipes this truly is the perfect deal for the modern and busy person, who is not dedicated to spending 3+ hours on the latest complex Ottolenghi-creation.
Keeping the target audience in mind Tatar also has a little ‘Basics’-section at the beginning that shows how one can get the best of a meal by getting the core ingredients right. On top of that you can find step-by-step instructions for more difficult recipes. The recipes in itself then are sorted into categories regarding the different occasion one might want to cook for (i.e. breakfast, at-the-desk-meals or his also in his social media content featured category ‘Meals that got me through College’). Also quite smart: Throughout the book you can find tips how food leftovers can be used in some of the recipes. For the short-on-cash student and in times of a societal food waste high surely a big benefit when planning your cooking. The recipes are not specifically vegan or vegetarian designed. A lot of them are meat based, but you can definitely find a bunch of vegetarian ones and can adapt some to fit vegan requirements (for example swap out the honey with agave sirup in an otherwise already vegan friendly meal). There sure is a big variety of mouthwatering options in there for you to try. I for example loved the Buffalo Cauliflower Bites (big cauliflower fan here) and can’t wait to go for the Homemade Gnocchi with Peas and Walnuts and the Straightforward Black Bean Tacos!
All in all this is a fun cookbook that surely doesn’t define cooking in a whole new way, but can serve as a great gift to beginner chefs that want to broaden their horizon step by step in a fun way.
Now I have to visit my kitchen and try some of the delicious foods provided here, so see you soon, lovelies <3
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars from me :)
Overview:
Target Audience: Beginner chefs, Young, Adults, Students
Difficulty Level: Easy recipes, even for the first time chef possible to handle!
Vegan/Vegetarian Friendly: Not specifically targeted to either, but many vegetarian recipes and some easily adaptible ones for vegan requirements
I consider myself a cook book snob. If it is not put together well I will not even glance through it. A good cook book must have a good layout that is easy to follow and pictures of the food. This book has both! This cook book for anyone who is starting out learning how to cook as Kevin explains basic kitchen tools and cooking basics.
Great variety of recipes with easy to follow directions. Perfect for those wanting to eat healthy and on a budget.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press, for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
As someone who loves to cook, I was looking forward to trying some of the recipes in Tasty. Healthy. Cheap. Unfortunately, this wasn't the cookbook for me. Firstly, it's geared towards young adults, which I am not, so I didn't care for the writing style. And secondly, I didn't find the recipes to be budget friendly or cheap at all. I can't imagine a student being able to afford the groceries for these meals. Not regularly at least. I do think that the photos were nice and I like how the book is a companion to the authors YouTube videos.
Gorgeous photography and some really inventive suggestions for how to use standard ingredients. Written to make cooking less intimidating to home chefs who are just starting out. As someone who loves cooking and cooks quite a bit, I would use this book for ideas but probably not follow recipes step by step. I would, however, buy this book for my brother or husband.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. It had lots of good ideas in it. The only downer is there definitely wasn't much of anything my kids would eat, except for desserts
Recipes I can’t wait to try easy tasty budget wise.lLove the photos really caught my eye made me hungry.A cookbook I will be using again#&again.#netgalley # quartrobooks.
I was excited for this book, especially because I'm always looking for more recipes to add to the roster that are both healthy and affordable. I wasn't familiar with the author prior to starting this book, but I liked his voice in this book, and will definitely be looking him up on social media now.
To start with, Tatar explains some basic concepts about cooking, and the most important kitchen items you'll need. This makes it easy to understand, especially for people who aren't as comfortable in the kitchen, or people who just haven't cooked in the past. He explains these things clearly and concisely, but well enough that anyone who has no kitchen experience could easily find their way around a recipe comfortably.
From there, he goes on to explain some basic recipes that make it simple to cook meals, and can be the building blocks for more detailed recipes. In fact, he builds on these later in the book, referring back to them. I loved that he includes gorgeous photos of all of the recipes, and that most importantly, each of the recipes in this book draw from basic ingredients. There's no need to make a trip to a specialty store to pick up spices or ingredients that will only be used for one or two recipes and then languish on the shelves.
There are a wide range of recipes here, from breakfast to lunch and dinner, as well as desserts and snacks. There's plenty of plant-based recipes, some are gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan, which is wonderful, especially since these tend to be more budget-friendly. All of these are easy to prepare and sound delicious. I bookmarked plenty of these recipes to prepare on my own, because they're right up my alley.
However, for a cookbook focused on healthy recipes, I was surprised to see that there were no nutritional values provided for any of the recipes. Some of them were less than healthy, and the author acknowledges that, but it's hard to decide exactly how healthy they really are without being able to see the amounts of nutrients they truly provide, including sodium, fat, fiber, and carbs. That would be something I'd like to see included. But overall, this was a standout cookbook, whether you're brand new to cooking or somewhat experienced.
Thanks Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for this eARC.
This was a pretty easy to follow cookbook. The only thing I didn't love was that while the recipes were geared toward one or two people you will still have leftovers. I made the fajita pasta and I just doubled the recipe instead of having two halves of cut bell peppers and other scraps. It's easier to just use all the ingredients instead of having leftovers.
Other than that it was easy to follow, fun to read, and I really enjoyed the beginning where it went over the basics.
Was so thrilled to receive an arc of this from netgalley since I've been following his Instagram for a long time. This cookbook did not disappoint, it has a variety of dishes, both in health and nationality, and is a great addition to anyone who loves to cook or is just starting out.
The perfect book for those who may be cooking in a dorm or in a kitchen. Simple, uncomplicated recipes featuring simple, yet tasty food. There is really something for everyone in this little book!
The recipes are tasty, not time-consuming, and easy to follow. I found a new black bean recipe even.
Clear instructions were the best thing about this book.
This was a great collection of easy to make and inexpensive meals. They are wholesome recipes and appear to be enjoyable. I can't wait to try these recipes, especially the health dessert options.
I've been trying really hard to get into healthier week night meals and this feels like a total knock out in terms of recipes. It's well organized, has a ton of good options for meals, and everything looks DELICIOUS. And it's using food I actually recognize, rather than weird, out of touch recipes that feel totally alien. Yum!
Perfect guide for cooking on a budget. Full of easy to follow recipes that not only taste good, but don’t break the bank. Highly recommend this cookbook.
This cookbook hits that sweet spot with recipes that not only are affordable, tempting, and healthy as all plainly promised in its title, but also come in a great variety that fit any time of day, and all seem quite easy to manage in most any basic kitchen. This feels like a fantastic resource for any brand new cook, college students and fresh grads especially. However, it’s so well rounded that I think those who have a little more experience under their belt would also be glad to have it in their personal cookbook library - or at least that’s the case with me!
This book is just as it says... Tasty food/recipes, Good for you and inexpensive to make. Isn't that what we all want? Well yes I do and I really enjoyed reading and exploring this book and its contents. There is something for every meal and every occasion.
Lovely introduction and some great basic information to get you started. I loved 'Boiled Eggs, The Easy Way' as don't we all have problems with boiled eggs and especially peeling them! Breakfast is the best meal of the day and there are so many options and tasty ones too.
There are ways to use up leftovers, meals to have at your desk, tacos, burgers and so much more. I am salivating just thinking about them all.
A great book so lets get started as I am ready to cook up big.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a nice recipe book. It has good pictures and a variety of recipes. I can see this book being useful especially for new cooks who are learning how to put together meals. Some of these aren't the most budget-friendly recipes depending on where you shop, but there's some nice ideas in this book.
