I love a cynical character and therefore loved DI Crow. I loved this one and this was a great start to this series. It felt very immersive and you really felt like you were right there following along with the case and following the clues. I will definitely read more of this series and recommend to all of my crime readers

Her Last Chance follow Alexander Crow as he tries to exonerate his estranged daughter from her involvement in a brutal murder. This complex story had me hooked and I really enjoyed the psychology elements of the book. I liked the consistency in the length of chapters and found it really easy to get through in a few days. I would read more in this series and by this author.

My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
This is a quality debut, Well written character driven murder mystery, with more than enough surprises for this reader. Nearly every detective in books these days seems to have some demons, and our hero is no exception, but in this case very much out of the ordinary. Clever intelligent imaginative tense and completely gripping from first to last page.
Completely recommended.

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
DI Crow is just about your standard grumpy police investigator, however, due to a brain injury he is more grumpy than most. When his daughter is accused of a crime he helps to prove that she is innocent. The mystery was good, just complicated enough to leave me guessing along with the characters.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.

Debut novel. Had me a little worried at the start that I had missed an earlier book because it seemed to start in the middle of a story but all does get explained. Will definitely read further books by this author, particularly if about Al Crow. Highly recommend.

Al is a detective, now on extended sick leave having been shot . His personal and career history becomes apparent in the first few chapters. Al is not always easy to live or work with.
His estranged daughter has now been arrested for accessory to murder. Her partner now comes to Al for help . He finds himself embroiled in a complicated web of crime, though he cannot officially investigate because of his sick leave and injury.
This is an interesting book with interesting characters who take some getting to know. The crimes are fairly believable, not too graphic and there are a couple of twists in the plot.
A great read, thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

Her Last Chance by H.J. Reed.
DI Crow Series, Book 1.
A bullet lodged in the frontal lobe is bound to cause a few health issues. For DI Al Crow, it's just the beginning. When his estranged daughter Rosie is accused of being involved in a grisly murder, Crow becomes her only hope of being acquitted. Desperate to save his daughter, Crow goes all out to solve the case. He knows this is a chance to repair a rift that has torn his family apart and to prove to his bosses that he's still up to the job. The stakes are high, but things are complicated. To solve the murder, Crow must reckon with his ex-wife’s connection to a seasoned, ruthless conman and Rosie's relationship with a dangerously unstable psychologist. Can he crack the case and save his family and his career?
A brilliant read. I loved DI Crow and Larson. Cant wait for the next book. 5*.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Her Last Chance, the first novel to feature DI Crow, set in Bristol.

Crow is on sick leave, recovering from being shot in the head, when he learns that his estranged daughter, Rosie, has been arrested for murder. His son in law, John Larson, asks him for help and together they work to find the real killer.

I thoroughly enjoyed Her Last Chance, which is an engrossing read with an imaginative plot, a dash of humour and some choice language (for those who care). It is told from Crow’s point of view, which to my mind is good as it makes the read immersive. His rather jaded, cynical take on life and human nature hides his softer, emotional side where his family is concerned and the novel being told from his point of view brings both sides of his character into sharper focus.

I’m not really quite sure what to say about the murder. I like it because it is different and entertaining, but it seems too complicated to have even a passing proximity to reality. Yet, it’s like window dressing, drawing the reader in with an unusual premise, when the meat of the novel is about the investigation and the burgeoning relationship between Crow and his son in law. These are both well done and very absorbing. Each man brings his own skills to the task and their interactions bring a certain humour to the situation. I like the steady accumulation of information, the evolving theories and the twists that mostly caught me by surprise. I think it gives the novel a steady, even pace that is easy to read.

I like the evolving dynamic between Crow and Larson. Initially Crow doesn’t rate Larson, but gradually comes to appreciate his character, smart, dogged and determined to save his wife, and his contribution to the case. Larson, on the other hand, is fully aware of Crow’s opinion of him and is pragmatic enough to put up with it.

I don’t know if this is a stand-alone or the start of a series, but I would gladly read more, so I have no hesitation in recommending Her Last Chance as a good read.

Inspector Crow is on leave, recovering from a shot to his head, when he is notified his estranged daughter has been arrested for murder. A seemingly cut-and-dry case turns into untangling a web to solve the case and clear his daughter’s name. Hopeful to mend the relationship with his daughter, Crow begins to investigate the case with the limited resources he has, since he’s on leave, until an unexpected person contacts him to work together.

The book keeps you guessing throughout the story as each piece of the puzzle is revealed. Just when you think they’ve discovered who is responsible, it takes another turn until the very end.

Her Last Chance by HJ Reed is about Inspector Crow who is out on medical leave as a police officer. He was on a drug call when he was shot in the head. He hasn't spoke to his daughter, Rosie, in about 5 years and she's been arrested for accessory to a murder. He wants to help prove her innocence but she doesn't want him helping at all. This was a good detective police read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. This book is not yet on Goodreads.

This book certainly had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Each chapter adds suspense to the story, without giving too much away. You almost feel like a detective whilst reading it. Her Last Chance is written in first person, from the perspective of Inspector Al. This book had me hooked from the start, although you need to concentrate when reading it as it's quite complex and full of detail. The description suggests this book is part of a series, so I can't wait to read the rest of them.

Wrll this was definitely a storyline I'd never come across before which was sooo refreshing! The writing style is good and the book keeps up a good pace. The characters were well written and showed development as the book went on. Its a police proceedural/thriller but it felt like more than that. I got really invested in the characters and relationships between them and how those relationships evolved and wounds were healed. There's plenty twists and turns and the ending was well plotted and didn't feel rushed and didn't leave any plot holes. It's a really solid book, I didn't have any complaints and can't wait to read more in the series

Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the eARC.
DI Crow is still off work after being shot in the head, when he finds out his daughter Rosie has been arrested for being an accessory to murder. Together with his son-in-law he investigates the case.
I found his gruff manner off-putting, but did like his growing appreciation of his son-in-law and their relationship.
As far as the book is concerned I mildly liked it, and it being the first in a series would definitely read the next one.

This is a very intricate and well plotted read in the DI Crow series. Crow is still recovering from being shot in the head when he receives a phone call that his estranged daughter, a psychiatric nurse, has been arrested as an accessory to murder. His ex wife's conman partner appears to be involved as well as a psychologist employed at the same facility as Crow's daughter. The characterisation is very good, there are plenty twists and it kept me interested until the end. A good read for lovers of thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Intense and addictive! Complex murder investigation with a plethora of red herrings driving the story forward. Sub-plots that really engage with some interesting twists among the well-developed players. A must read!

Inspector Al Crow is recovering from being shot in the brain when his daughter is jailed for murder.
While he is not officially at work, he and his son in law, John Larson, investigate the case.
The clues lead to many suspects.

I enjoyed this novel, the police and investigative work was detailed and it flowed well.

The first of another series I would read.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book does not appear on Goodreads yet, and I do not currently qualify to post reviews on Amazon due to a lack of 'points'. I will post a Goodreads review when the book appears on there.
