This book was a RIDE! Lots of different threads that were woven together by the end. It had a well moving plot, but the last quarter went very quickly. Murder, beatrayal, and jealousies all set at a summer camp. Different POV's and a timeline that flips from present day to twenty years before.
I really enjoyed this book, thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books, Zebra for the ARC!
Twenty years ago a girl was murdered at Camp Fog Lake while Emma was going to camp there.
Now, twenty years later it has reopened. Emma’s niece Harley is going with her friend Marissa.
Emma knows the dangers there and is going to go keep an eye on them. Death and destruction occur and secrets and lies are revealed on this creepy, foggy lake.
Thanks NetGalley and Kensington Books for this ARC that will be released June 27, 2023!
When “Camp Love Shack,” which shut down 20 years ago after two mysterious deaths, the counselors-in-training thought their secrets would remain buried forever, but when the camp reopens and their children return as CITs to the newly revamped “Caamp Fog Lake,” and/or they’re invited back for an “Alumni Weekend,” all hell breaks loose.
This book follows some of the same characters from the River Glen series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone novel.
I’m a huge Nancy Bush fan and I swear she just gets better and better with each book. This one was just full of suspense and thrills, woven into a complex plot that was interesting enough to keep my attention throughout, but not busy enough to be confusing or overly complicated. Not to mention there’s all the elements of great spooky stories: ghostly campfire tales, secret hookups, even more secrets and lies, and oh yeah: a freaking cult! I mean what more could you ask for?!
And it all comes together in the end in a great conclusion that really works well. It was satisfying and made sense in the context of the story. The whole thing was just mind blowing once all the secrets were revealed in the end. It was intense.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great thriller for this summer. It’s another winner from a great author!

First off, a huge thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Nancy Bush for allowing me the opportunity to read this book.
When summer hits, I want ALL the summer camp thriller reads, I normally spend the last part of April and first part of May researching more I haven't read when I've literally read them all, so I have to look for the new one.
This one SCREAMED perfection to me and I was so disappointed.
I am a fast reader, I read about two books a week, it took me over two weeks to read this one because it was that bad to me. There were WAY too many characters with NO character development, and I was so disappointed. I could not follow this story; I wish I could have, but I couldn't.
I do not DNF ANYTHING, but this was the hardest for me. There wasn't much of a scary camp vibe, but it could be for someone else, but it just wasn't for me.
At Camp Love Shack, there is a story about creepy fog that comes in and brings death. Turns out the stories are all fairytales; they’re based on real life events.
Twenty years ago, a girl’s body was found on the ledge above the lake. Some say it was part of a suicide pact at the nearby commune. Brooke, Rona, and Wendy know what really happened and they aren’t talking about it. The camp quickly fell apart and shut down.
Now the camp has reopened with a new name and a new generation. Alumni are invited back for the weekend. When the fog rolls in, does death still come? It would seem that way…who is going to live long enough to regret coming back?
Based on the synopsis of this one I excepted a suspense thriller with maybe a little horror. It was described as “Friday the 13th meets Friends Like These” at a summer camp sleepaway. That is not what I got. This was a heavy suspense book with so many characters. I don’t usually mind side characters, but after reading this one I’m not even sure who the main characters were, there were so many. All the narrators were unreliable, which I struggled with – I don’t mind an unreliable character, but I usually need something to hold onto. I really enjoyed that this one had a commune, those can be so fun and always give me creepy vibes. That was very true here as well. I just felt that this book needed to be tighter and more focused. Had the number of characters been reduced, I think I would have really enjoyed this one.
If you are looking for a very character drive suspense novel, then check this one out June 27th.
Thank you so much to Kensington Books, Zebra and Netgalley, @Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Camp by Nancy Bush is a standalone thriller. I've not read this author before. The premise of the book sounded really exciting and I love the idea of a camp murder mystery. I didn't like the large cast of characters introduced and found it confusing to keep track of who was who and how they related to each other. The mystery was chilling and it made me want to know what really happened to the people involved. I would read more by this author. I think fans of thrillers, camp horror or YA novels would enjoy this one.
This book goes back to a summer camp that some of the characters attended 20 years ago. People died and the camp was closed, but it is now re opening. I usually love this authors books but I had trouble with this one. There was plenty of suspense and intrigue but I couldn’t bring myself to care about the characters. This one wasn’t for me but I don’t want to discourage others from trying it. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
"The Camp" is a thrilling page-turner that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. As a fan of slasher movies from the 1980s, I was delighted to find that this book reminded me of those classic films in all the best ways.
Bush expertly weaves together a suspenseful plot filled with some unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. What I loved most about "The Camp" was its ability to capture the essence of the slasher genre while still feeling fresh and unique. It had all the tropes that I love, from the isolated setting to the mysterious killer, but also managed to subvert my expectations and keep me on my toes.
Overall, "The Camp" is a must-read for fans of the slasher genre and anyone looking for a thrilling and suspenseful read. Nancy Bush has created a true masterpiece that I will be recommending to everyone I know.
Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher Kensington Books, Zebra for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Camp is another fantastic thriller from one of my favorite authors, Nancy Bush! While I know she has a huge backlog (which I will eventually get to) I have loved every single release of hers that I have read and that includes this one. This is the perfect summer thriller and I highly recommend it!
All the while I was reading this book, it was niggling at the back of my mind that these characters sounded familiar. It wasn't till after I finished this twisty fun book with secrets and a killer that hunts in the fog that I remembered I had read about Jamie and Emma in The Babysitter. It was nice to learn more about them and continue their story as they try to survive the fun time that is Camp Fog Lake.
Lots of action and murder in this book. Lots of different view points too. That was a little hard to follow sometimes, especially between Rona and Brooke. But it was still a good story. I definitely do not recommend Camp Fog Lake as a place to work or send your children, or even go back as an alumni, especially if you have secrets back from when you went there as a teen. But that is how you get a creepy killer book and so I am glad they did.
Such a good mystery! It gives amazing Friday the 13th vibes!! Nancy Bush is the best with creepy thrillers! I highly enjoyed this one and it would make a wonderful read for this summer, especially by a lake..
Another great thriller from Nancy Bush. Having read this author previously, I was anticipating this book and it did not disappoint. Had me hooked from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oooh, creepy camp, murder, and a cult leads to a very enjoyable read.
I loved how this one went between two different events. Emma saw something when she went to camp as a teen. But her accident happened shortly afterwards, so it’s all confusing to her and her family. Now the camp is reopening and Harley wants to attend. Will bad things happen again. You must read to find out.
I really enjoyed the suspense and mystery of this one. It was hard for me to figure it all out. Once you start reading, you won’t put it down until finished.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the chance to read and review this one.
Creepy Camp setting! Dual timelines and murder, mayhem and cults.
What's not to like? Nancy Bush pays homage to the 80's slashers and I am here for it! Will there be a repeat of the murder such as the one that closed the camp 20 years ago? Past Campers return to the scene to find out!

Camp, murder and mystery. Interesting story and I enjoyed it. Some parts were slow but picks up quickly. Definitely recommend
“I know you’re trying to leave. I’m here to help you on your journey.”
This book and I were not meant to be. It’s not the book’s fault. The mismatch is entirely on me. I’m usually quite particular about my bookish choices: I read early reviews, I research the author’s previous books and read excerpts when I can. I didn’t do any of that here because the blurb dazzled me.
I saw “Friday the 13th meets Friends Like These at a summer sleepaway camp isolated in the woods of Oregon, as New York Times bestselling author Nancy Bush puts a diabolical modern twist on the classic 1980s slasher film trope!” I’m pretty sure I only absorbed ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘1980s slasher film’, then expected something along the lines of My Heart Is a Chainsaw. I was ready for slasher horror when, if I’d done my usual due diligence, I would have realised I was signing up for suspense with a hefty dose of drama.
All of this to say, please read some reviews by people who read the book they thought they were going to read before deciding whether this is the book for you. Their reviews should carry much more weight than mine.
When Emma Whelan was about to begin her senior year, she attended Camp Fog Lake, known by the campers as Camp Love Shack. What takes place at camp that year cements the rumours about what happens when the fog rolls in. It also shuts the camp down.
“The fog rolls in, covers everything in a cold, gray blanket, then recedes, leaving a trail of death in its wake.”
Twenty years later, a new generation of campers are set to experience Camp Love Shack, now under new ownership. An alumni and parents’ weekend is coinciding with the Fourth of July which, if Jaws taught us nothing else, is when the chaos will reach its bloody crescendo.
Now, I questioned the return of the main players in the death scenes twenty years ago but without them there’s no story. I don’t know if anything attests to the level of damage camp did to them more than their individual decisions to allow the next generation of their families be the Guinea pigs for the grand reopening. That’s seriously messed up. But also good for the drama.
Because I spent much of the read anticipating some slicing and dicing, the drama between the characters initially threw me. You’ve got angst about exes, blackmail and rumours. There are love triangles (and a dinner triangle).
While I generally love plot twists, I tend to struggle with unreliable narrators. Deceit plays a part in the events of this book. How else could the real story of what happened that night be hidden for twenty years?
A lot of readers probably won’t even blink at the part that, had I known about it ahead of time, would have prevented me from picking up this book in the first place. I have a real problem reading books where a character lies about having been sexually assaulted. The overwhelming majority of people who disclose having been sexually assaulted in the world outside the pages are telling the truth, yet some individuals and institutions still respond to them from a position of disbelief. Stories where characters lie about this type of trauma only make it easier for people to continue to deny the experience of those who have been sexual assaulted. Regardless of how good the story is, I’m never going to be okay with that.
Please take my three stars with a grain of salt. I wasn’t the audience for this book. Chances are, you will be.
“Looks like the fog is coming.”
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Zebra Books, an imprint of Kensington Books, for the opportunity to read this book.

What I Didn’t Like
~This book took a while to get interesting so it was a very slow beginning. This is why my rating went to a 3.
~A lot of characters sometimes made this book confusing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Camps, cults, mystery and murder. What else could you ask for in a book? This had a lot working in it's favor and it definitely succeeded. Highly likeable characters along with one's you also kind of hate. This was a bit on the longer side but with that comes more depth. I finished this thoroughly enjoying it but also felt like something was missing but can't figure out what. Four Stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC.
