Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
3.5 stars
Loved the first 25% and really thought this would be a 5 star rating. It was witty and fun and sexy but then kind of veered off course when the two MCs met up again. Wyatt was great throughout, but Blake showing no self-confidence once she got back to her hometown was a real turn off for me. The middle part lost my interest until Wyatt's colleague showed up. I think it would have been fun to show more of the spy moments instead of them being entirely off page. Still, I would recommend this one.
A big thank you to Christi Barth, Entangled Publishing, and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion. The (ex) Spy Who (maybe) Loved Me comes out March 20, 2023.
After meeting in an airport bar while flights were grounded, Blake and Wyatt have a one night stand that knocked their socks off (literally). But that's all either of them thought it could be. Wyatt was returning states side after being an international spy for 15 years. Blake is scientist who needs to keep all her focus on her research. Not expecting to see each other again both get the surprise of their lives that not only did Wyatt move to Blakes home town, they are also being paired up for an art contest where artist get inspiration from scientific research. Will the two be able to recognize their amazing chemistry and work towards a brilliant future.
The (ex) Spy Who (maybe) Loved Me was a quick and fun novel. Blake and Wyatt were enjoyable main characters, who both had their own hang ups to get over when it came to starting relationships. It was fun to see Wyatt start to get used to civilian life. It was also heartwarming to see Blake starting to warm up to the idea that work isn't everything. I did think that the third act issue was predictable, and I was hoping that it would have gone a little different. But overall if you are looking for a fun and low stakes ex-spy novel, The (ex) Spy Who (maybe) Loved Me is for you.
This is the first time I've read this author, and I found the story entertaining. The premise is a bit different, and that alone made me want to give this one a try. I liked both Blake and Wyatt, but I will say that I grew a bit impatient with the hot/cold dynamic of their relationship going on for so long. Overall, this was a relaxing, fun spy romance with a rom-com undertone, and I would recommend it to others.
Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing an ARC for review.
Blake is a scientist who wants a perfect one night stand and finds it with a hot stranger. Unfortunately, she sees him in her small town the next day. Wyatt just wants to forget his black ops job and Blake was the perfect distraction....
Love Blake and Wyatt together. They are hot and fun. They are attracted to each other but have to overcome their obstacles. A fun spy romance.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
"You can't move forward when you're looking behind you."
I’m a fan of this author. That in itself is the reason why, when I started reading the book, I thought I would have loved it. Turned out I was right !!! This book was so good!!!
I had already read “Hottie on Her Shelf” which is a sort of book one in the same series because it evolves around Fitz and Hallie and Fitz is Blake’s brother but these books can be read separately.
This time I had so much fun too !!!! Blake and Wyatt’s story was so good to read !!!
Consider an ex-spy and a scientist, forced to work together but with an incredible chemistry and tension that will be impossible to deny!!
From strangers to one-night-stands to enemies to friends to lovers and even a forced proximity trope in a small town !!!!
I loved this book a lot !!! I guess I can say that there’s even a bit of the grumpy sunshine … but in reverse !!!! She is such a scientist with her rules and her reason and he is trying to completely change his life thanks to retirement from his job as a spy and he is so funny !!!
I had a great time reading this book and I literally can’t wait for another one to come !!!
"Screw whoever put that in your brain.
You're the only one who knows what makes you happy. Life can be cut short before you know it. Wouldn't you rather do what you love than do what's expected?"
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 "Nowhere is safe. Ever. Trust me." This book was an absolute whirlwind and the first spy romance I've ever read (I shall definitely be reading more after this).
Wyatt has left his life as a spy, well trying too, those habitual actions don't seem to disappear all too easily. Blake is a scientist working in a lab in a town where everyone seems to know everyone. They meet in an airport lounge as they are waiting to see if their flights will be delayed because of the storm. They both strike up a conversation, and as the storm gets worse and flights are cancelled. They both wind up in Blake's hotel room for one night, and one night only. However the next day after the have both landed they wind up working in the same lab, together. Him working as an artist and her as a scientist. Wyatt is trying to work his way back into the "normality" of life and Blake cannot end up in a relationship. However, as sparks fly between the two, the truths untold start to unravel.
I was so excited to receive this book as it looked right up my bridal path- spies, one night stands, and they're working together. The start of this book was so so strong and I could not put it down, especially the introduction to Wyatt's character as he was describing how difficult it was to not scrutinise everyone who walked past him. It was just all too difficult to turn off. Until he met Blake, who unfortunately was in a different mindset to him. Where he was eager to re-start his life and begin to make truly personal connections with others, she did not want to even tell him her occupation when they first met. This, I adored as I was expecting it to be the other way around with him being the ex-spy who won't give much away instead of Blake. I also really enjoyed reading about Blake's position as a woman in her lab job and how a relationship would complicate everything as that is all anyone would see of her. They would not see how hard she had worked but rather the man on her arm and how he got her to where she is (even if it isn't true).
My issue with this book is how back and forth the relationship was after their one night stand. She would kiss him in the lab, and then say that it cannot be more. I understand she had her reasons to protect herself and people do need to let go, and if I'm completely honest I often have the same mindset as her, but it just happened too many times for me. There was also a scene where they were shouting "parkour" and it's very personal to me but I just found that uncomfortable.
I enjoyed the conflict in this book, I think it felt apt as they both had very valid reasons for protecting both themselves and each other. However, the relationship was slightly too hot and cold for me. I would definitely recommend this book if you want an easy read with a very thrilling concept. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you netgalley for the arc!
A sweet and entertaining read. The story is entertaining, funny and easy to follow, the characters are likeable and have a great connection. A great and relaxing read after busy day.
Sparks fly between Blake and Wyatt when they are stranded at an airport. Blake is a very organised woman and had set out to have a one night stand on her trip. Wyatt is the perfect man for the task. They don’t speak about their lives and after one amazing night agree to part and never see each other again. Life has other plans for them when it throws them together again at her work for a science/art collaboration. She is a stoic, intelligent, very focused scientist. He is an observant, lonely ex spy who is trying to return to his love of art. Wyatt is also new to town as his aunt died and left him her house. He is trying to integrate himself back in to civilian life. Whilst they are working together the sparks ignite again and they cannot stay away from each other. Only this time one night is not enough and their feelings grow and grow. Blake has a very structured life, she is part of the founding family of the town and there are a lot of expectations around her appearance and actions. Wyatt brings out the fun in her life and shows her there is more to life than work, but when she discovers he hasn’t told her the truth about her past it causes a rift between them. While this is all going on Wyatt can’t turn off his spy senses and discovers a plot going on in the background which he has to foil before he can properly move on with his life. Luckily Blake and Wyatt have people around them who allow them to see what is really important and they get their HEA. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
He’s a retired spy and she’s a scientist, they were only suppose to have a one night stand and go on their way but suddenly they both find themselves staying in the same small town and being forced to work together. Blake Montgomery is a scientist who went on vacation to NYC with plans to shop, relax, and finally let off some steam by having an amazing one night stand. When she meets a sexy stranger at an airport bar, it’s the perfect opportunity... except when she returns to her small town of Swan Cove and back to her life of being work focused and trying to deal with the fall out of her last relationship and being betrayed by her ex, she never expects to see her one night stand turn up and move into town. Wyatt Keene is a spy, well ex-spy now that his job ended. Now he has to live a regular life, and find a way to just be a civilian and that starts by moving into the house his aunt left him after she passed out in the town of Swan Cove and dealing with the fact that his aunt entered him into an art contest without telling him. Wyatt has spent his life keeping his identity a secret in order to protect those around him, so when he’s finally meant to live a normal life in a small town, can he really turn off his tendencies? Wyatt and Blake were never meant to be more than a one night stand, but now that they’re both living in the same town, forced to work together in the same art contest... can they deny their chemistry? Will Wyatt be able to finally tell Blake the truth or will his old life finally catch up with him? Can an ex-spy really leave being a spy or is he still on the job ? Can Blake, a woman who hates liars, be with someone who has made it his life’s mission to life in order to protect those around him or will her past relationship taint her new one? This was a pretty fun read, its. the second book in the series but you can definitely read it as a standalone. I really liked Wyatt, and found him to be an interesting love interest for Blake. I also thought it was interesting that every time Blake had a problem she went to her friends and they immediately told her what was really going on and honestly I agreed with them so much. Blake constantly thinks she’s right and is quick to anger, she over-exaggerates her problems and whines but then acts like an ice princess or gets mad despite her laying out her own rules and breaking them. Overall, if you’re into spy romances give this one a go.
*Thanks Nethgalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC, Entangled: Amara for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
Wyatt is leaving his life as a spy behind him. Kind of. Blake just wants to work in her lab and not have any distractions. Then they are partnered up in an “art meets science” competition and things get complicated for both of them.
Great romcom. Second in the series, but not necessary to read the first book before diving into this one. Love all the secondary characters… supportive friends who I imagine will be the main characters in future books!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Watch for The (Ex) Spy Who (Maybe) Loved Me to come out March 20, 2023!
LOVED this book! I loved Wyatt, the somewhat tortured, somewhat ex, spy. His story is interesting and I loved how he intersected with Blake. Blake is a scientist working in a a secretive lab, always worried about portraying the "right" image and representing her family well.
When they are thrust together, sparks erupt and they can barely stand to be in the same room together....until they can. I loved the push/pull of their relationship and how they interacted. Their relationship was engaging and fun. Even better, I loved how the characters are thoughtful and intelligent - especially such a strong female of intelligence. I even enjoyed the complication of national security percolating in the background and woven throughout their story.
This story is a winner that fans of the genre will love. The author is on my must read authors' list.
