Overall, this book was not for me. While it has elements of books I love, such as dark academia, forensic anthropology, and revenge, the pace was too slow for my liking and I felt that the character development was not enough for me to like or care what happened to the characters. While the book was not for me, the narrator was good and it was not the narration that I had a problem with.

The Protégé follows Dr. Hannah Bryers, anthropology professor and forensics expert, as her career is sabotaged. This story was alright but I wished there had been more tension and suspense. The multiple points of view were nice, but I think it took away from the atmosphere the story could have had. Instead of wondering who is sabotaging her you get to wonder when Dr. Bryers will figure it out. But even without any big plot twists the story was still interesting and engaging. It kind of felt like watching an episode of Bones, especially with Dr. Bryers being called Dr. B at times. While this one was just okay for me I'm sure it'll be a favorite for others.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for sure. With this clearly said…give this novel the benefit of the doubt. There is A Lot of jargon and blah…blah…blah stuff in the beginning that round out the story but it takes a bit to get into the heart of the story.
Then hang on it’s good!

A suspense thriller that discusses plot and storyline from dual PoVs. One side is the geeky researcher, who only wants to focus on her career (to be successful or hide her past - not really sure). The other perspective is of the antagonist who is inspiring her actions from revenge.
The book made it too east for me to side with the researcher who is an absolute no social filter personality 🤣. The other one however, I think she lacks depth, mostly driven by trauma but don't get much inside on her own charachter apart from what happened to her sister. So overall a decent read, but I will not put this in a psychological category.

The Protégé is a psychological thriller in the vein of Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta series. I appreciated the technical language included in the thoughts and dialog of Dr. Hannah Byers. It made the character more authentic and interesting. Winter Jones, on the other hand, wasn’t as relatable/believable. Despite being the villain in the novel, I felt her evilness was a bit overplayed or exaggerated. Overall, it was a good book with a great ending.

Happy book birthday to The Protege which just dropped.
Rounded this audio book up to a 4, with the caveat - the beginning requires a bit of work to keep up with the jargon, technical terms and introduction of a LOT going on. If this wasn't an arc, and if I was only looking for easy breasy, I may well have given up and that would have been a shame.
I am a big fan of setting being a character itself, and this dark academia gives the reader an interesting locale, with a campus that feels like a small town, dark woods, caves and a lot of places for a stalker to stalk. Dr. Hannah Bryers is a strong female character, albeit with a bit of naivety but overall I enjoyed the interactions between her and the supporting characters.
Overall, a great introduction for me to a new author and I'll now be checking out more Gehrman works.

I listened to the audio version and the narrators were fine. I didn’t find the book anything extra special or terribly bad- it was just ok. It was hard for me to get invested in the beginning because it was slow. I’m sure this will be a favorite for some but it just wasn’t the book for me.

2 stars
The book is extremely long, dragged and repetitive. So many irrelevant details and thoughts and internal dialog. Plus, once again we have the smarter than everyone killer who is ahead of the game and commits the perfect murders. The ending was also a let down.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this book!
