3.5 stars for this second-chance romance featuring a game show set.
Eli and Charlie were high school sweethearts -- before Eli ditched Charlie and iced her out, breaking her heart. She is stunned when she sees him thirteen years later on the set of her favorite game show, but Eli is thrilled for the opportunity to explain what happened over a decade ago and maybe have a second chance with the woman he's never stopped thinking about. Both of them are carrying their own financial and emotional burdens, on the show to try and help their respective families. Add all of this to the pressure to keep winning & increasing their prize money and you've got a recipe for fireworks -- in more ways than one.
I wish the actual show itself had played a larger role in the book -- the scenes of them winning on the show could have really enhanced the re-emergence of their friendship & relationship. But other than that, this was a sweet and quick read about two brainy people who learn a lot about emotional intelligence and how to be a part of a team -- on and off the show.
A game show is an interesting concept for a romance novel. The book was funny, making me laugh out loud a few times. I did feel more invested in the story around the storyline more than the romance itself. I actually think this may have done better for me if it were sold as a fiction with romance as a subplot.
Overall a good read.
This was a very typical romcom. It had some cute moments and a few laugh out loud scenes, but it wasn't life changing.
I love a good quiz so when I saw this book, I knew I needed to read it. It was fun and quirky and I really loved the characters. Found it funny in all the best ways will be reccomending it to everyone
Thank you NetGalley and author for this ARC!
I enjoyed it a lot! Such a cute book. This book is a fun and flirty romantic comedy. I highly recommend this and will most definitely will be reading again.
I wanted to love this book. Really, I did. The plot sounded so good to me. I just couldn’t get into it. The main character was so immature and the scenarios between them seemed so fake and unrealistic. I just really didn’t have fun. I felt more second hand embarrassment most of the time.
3.5 ⭐️
I enjoyed this book quite a lot! It was a second chance romance with a fun game show twist. There was of course drama between the main characters, but I enjoyed their growth throughout the book. The spicy scenes were minimal, but added a lot to the plot!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced digital copy of this book!
As a childhood game-show junkie, I was looking forward to this one. Big money! No whammies! I think the protagonist’s voice reflects exactly what I would expect from a trivia buff. Sprinkled with tidbits of trivial knowledge, the text is full of Easter eggs. The game show narrative matches what people understand about the nefarious side of Hollywood. The desperation of poverty and the vagaries of the American healthcare system are accurately represented. The romance is the one thing that came up a bit short. A little more character development at the outset would’ve made it more believable.
This was SUCH a cute premise. I enjoyed reading this ARC so much and will be sure to recommend it when it is released in October. I loved the plot and the characters so much!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I really enjoyed this book. It’s a cute second chance romance revolving around a trivia show. I wanted more trivia but I enjoyed this book a lot.
This was a very cute book, I loved the game show aspect of the plot. I did feel like many parts of the story were rushed, sporting through some important details in the book.
Truthfully, I’m not sure I liked anything about this book, but I keep getting rejected for books on NetGalley, so I had to finish it to make my rating go up. Ugh. I should honestly probably stop using NetGalley and just get books from the library when they come out (or buy them lol). Anyways, I didn’t like the characters because they felt self-centered and also didn’t really seem to change throughout the whole story. I didn’t love the storyline because it felt unrealistic, but I also have no idea how being on game shows works. The writing didn’t feel great to me either. I feel bad writing all these things because even though they are what I thought, they do feel a little bit hurtful.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
I requested this book because I was really intrigued by the idea of a quiz show romance. I didn’t expect it to be a second chance romance (my fault for just skimming the description), but this book didn’t need to be a second chance romance. I would’ve preferred it be a bit longer and be about two strangers meeting on a quiz show and falling in love.
The main characters had very little depth. They both had side stories regarding why they needed the quiz show money, but very little development beyond that. It would’ve been nice to see Charlotte interacting with someone other than Eli and her family.
I did like the writing and pacing of this book. It was an easy read and had some entertaining moments.
The copy I received did not have proper breaks between the changes of POV between the main characters, which made it a little confusing at times.
This just did not work for me. I felt like the main conflict was just too cheesy and I couldn't get behind the relationship. Overall just not my cup of tea.
I thought the game show premise was so cute. As a long time game show lover, that is honestly what drew me in. It is also a relatively unique setting for a book which was very compelling. I’m not usually a fan of second chance romances and I don’t think this one has converted me but I definitely thought it was cute.
There was a lot going on throughout the book which occasionally distracted from the overall storyline - family drama on both sides, game show set drama from the producers, not to mention the FMC and MMC’s own drama from their pasts.
I wish this had been a little more fleshed out as the book itself is fewer than 300 pages or the number of side stories pared down. It was like a little bit of a lot of things.
Overall, this was a cute second chance romance set on a game show (which is the best) and the witty banter in front of tv cameras is producer gold.
Such a cute book! The game show plot isn't a common one, and this was well done. It just seemed like there could've been more details into the show itself and other areas of the book. We never really found out why Lucky was around Eli's dad (could it have been the evil guys doing, or just by chance?)
Overall, this was a really cute second chance romance that I devoured in one sitting!
This was such a unique concept! I love game shows so this was right in my wheelhouse and I loved it.
Argh. I think I unfortunately am not a fan of this author’s writing. This is the second galley of here that’s fallen flat for me. I just don’t find the characters realistic! In this case, we have an honesty-obsessed 30 year old main character who has been holding a grudge since high school over silencing SO UNIMPORTANT. Yes, he ghosted her and let her take the fall for skipping school. But all she did was get in minor trouble with her high school, it wasn’t like she got arrested or something actually dramatic. And it took her family years to trust her again??? Are you kidding me? It’s just so eye roll and unrealistic. Similarly, there’s a lot of drama over the game show situation. But Eli was threatened/bribed/coerced! She makes SUCH a big deal out of it and he’s really not the bad guy, he did what almost everyone would do in that scenario. Her expectations are insane. And he couldn’t have told her in advance because it happened on a very short commercial break! Ugh. I just was so frustrated with how overly dramatic she was. Also, I just kept being told how everyone felt instead of getting to experience it myself via good writing. It just didn’t pull me in.
2/5 stars.
2.5 stars rounded up - I loved the nerdy premise of this book, a second-chance romance on a trivia show. There were some really fun date moments and I enjoyed the random facts sprinkled in. Unfortunately, there was just so much happening that the romance got lost. Charlotte and Eli both had a huge amount of family drama, and were also dealing with drama from the show’s producers, as well as their own feelings about what had happened in their past relationship. Any one or two of those storylines would have been plenty - with all of them, the book felt overfull.
I really enjoyed this story and thought it was such a fun read. I loved the game show aspect and would have really liked to have to have more action on set to get into what goes on behind the scenes. The story was a romance but throw in the fact these two have a history together, backgrounds which mean both Eli and Charlotte were desperate for money and the need to do the 'right thing' and it made for a easy to read, enjoyable story. Eli and Charlotte go through ups and downs as they navigate trying to win the money, and learning to trust and fall in love again. Of course there are bumps in the road which didn't always turn out as I expected. Quick, fun read.
