Back with another ARC review! Thank you to Alcove Press and NetGalley for the ARC! You can read this one as of 10/17/23.
This one is a somewhat typical enemies to lovers second chance romance! Ex high school sweethearts, who ended on bad terms! No they’re thirty and their chemistry and success as a team is still there!
What makes it unique is the trivia game show take on the trope! The competitive streak between Charlotte and Eli makes for some great tension!
Their reasons for needing to win are both selfless and heartfelt! The witty banter sets the stage for some great communication? Throw in some spice and fun study sessions and this is a winner. I loved that it is written as dual POV! All romcoms should be at this point!
Miscommunication between adults, we don’t know her! This is a great reprieve from that boring third act method of conflict! One star downgrade because I just didn’t think the conflict was necessary at all!
This is a super quick, fun, and flirty read that acts as a great palette cleanser! It is definitely one that will have you laughing out loud! 8/10 will be recommending!
High school sweethearts, who ended miserably, getting a second chance all while playing together on a game show. I can’t say I’ve seen a plot similar and that’s what intrigued me the most about this book.
Both Charlotte and Eli need the money winning the game show would bring them. What they didn’t expect was old feelings and new obstacles to get in their way.
I thought this was a quick and fun read.
Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for the ARC.
Let's Get Quizzical by Kelly Ohlert is a delightful rom-com.
A light-hearted perfect rom-com. It made my heart smile.
The characters were great and so loveable. I couldn't help but cheer them on.
I found so much joy in reading this book. The descriptions and details were nicely executed. The romance was nice and clean.
This book was a wonderful novel and I’m looking forward to reading more from Ohlert in the future.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank You NetGalley and Alcove Press for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I absolutely LOVE game shows, so I was insanely excited to read this romcom about characters who not only love game shows but also participate in one! The story is fun and full of nerdy-ness. Perfect for anyone who enjoys spending their evenings watching Family Feud and Jeopardy with the added bonus of some entertaining spice.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
“That’s it. Talk nerdy to me.”
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thirteen years after their break up, Charlotte and Eli are paired together on a quiz show, with the forced proximity sparking a nerdy second chance romance.
I really loved the premise of this book with such a unique setting and interesting character dynamics. Filled with obscure facts and a museum trip that was (almost) to die for, this is a fun, cute romcom. I did wish the ending was extended a little and a bit more backstory provided throughout but I look forward to see what Ohlert releases next!
I was very excited for this novel and in many ways it was very enjoyable. The plot focuses on two old lovers Charlotte and Eli who meet on quiz show and are forced to work as a team in order to win competition. As you can expect their relationship didn’t end on good terms and now Charlotte really hates Eli. What we get to know from the beginning is that Eli has a rough relationship with his dad who isn’t the best parent and who had difficult past… since he was ashamed of his family and his financial problems he decided to leave Charlotte and let her have better man. What he did not consider was her feelings and what she wanted. Charlotte is a family person, she goes to the show for her grandmother. She is kind of difficult character because she’s constantly bullying Eli during the quiz show and it really made me not like her. This relationship is a bit toxic and I think she’s too much focused on the past. Although I may have some issues with this book, I must admit that the idea for the romance is original and it’s the first one to focus on quiz competition.
*ARC Review*
3.5 stars.
Let's Get Quizzical is a cute second chance romance with a nerdy twist. Based around a hit game show (think Jeopardy) where in the final round the top two competitors pair up to be a team and compete against the winners of the previous week. Charlotte our main character has been preparing for her moment on the show her whole life. For years she has watched with her parents and aging grandmother. When it is finally her time to shine on the show she gets to the final round where to is reunited with the ex boyfriend who broke her heart in high school. Despite these negative feelings towards Eli, the male main character, she must pair up with him for the final part of the show. We get to see them work through past issues and rebuild their once strong relationship.
There is some drama, some pining, and some sketchy stuff going behind the scenes of the show. It was a fun book but felt that some of the themes didn't go into enough detail and we didn't get the full look at the characters we could have. It was a quick easy read that I wish focused more on the love of the game show rather than the sketchiness of it.
Review in progress and to come.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Charlotte and Eli come face to face when the chance for Charlotte arises to feature and take place on her favourite trivial game but in doing this the feelings they once shared becomes open again, one thing is for sure is follow your heart. ABSOLUTELY loved this book from start to finish
This was one of my most anticipated reads for 2023 so I was so excited to be able to read early! I just adored this story and these characters. It was charming and funny and so romantic. I also really adored the quiz questions throughout. This is a MUST read rom com and I can't wait to order a physical copy for my shelves.
This was cute. But it was also a little…I want to say old fashioned but that’s not really right. There’s a bit of spice so it’s not all cheesy. But I just found the grudges and reasons for them a little over the top. I picked this out because I wanted something light and funny but it did have its deeper moments. Charlotte and Eli just seem a little stunted like they need to grow up a little. I did enjoy it and think it was cute. Thank you to NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
great romance about being on a quiz show and a second chance at love. loved eli and charlotte and their families. Great change for the both of them. .
I got this as an ARC from netgalley, all in exchange for an honest review of my thoughts. This book starts off abruptly and it is kind of chaotic as a lot seems to occur at once. From page one, random facts were stated that had no real reason to be in the book and it really frustrated me. I understand that it was probably done so we could see how smart the main female character would be on the game show, but I think it was displayed poorly. The weather according to the world atlas after hearing the smoke alarm? Making popcorn and then suddenly stating a fact about outlawed confetti in 1895? It just doesn’t make sense. I just couldn’t get past this first chapter and unfortunately, did not finish it. Props on the cute cover photo though.
Let’s Get Quizzical is a cute second chance romance with some fun trivia built in. While I think the pacing was odd at times, I enjoyed diving right into Charlotte and Eli’s story. I think plenty of readers will enjoy this one.
A second chance romance that’s full of trivia facts. I enjoyed the game show aspect of the book, but had a hard time connecting to the characters. Still a cute and quick read though.
Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for the eArc in exchange for a honest review.
Despite both Eli & Charlie's characters having painful backstories, I felt hard to connect with them. Their actions were childish because of which I couldn't figure out if the plot was supposed to be funny or serious. The book was short and fast paced and the second chance storyline was appealing but I just wanted to finish the book for one and all because the execution was sub par tbh.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this arc! Let's Get Quizzical is a second chance romance between two brainiacs! I wouldn't say this was super comedic but it had its moments and I loved the random facts thrown into it. Would recommend!
Scene is a couple that "broke up" in high school ends up being a team as part of a game show. I loved the game show questions throughout the book! The character development was enjoyable. Especially loved the Midwest setting and that the couple reside in Michigan (my home state). Rounding up to 5 stars.
I enjoyed this romance.
I didn't recognize the author when I requested the advance read copy of Let's Get Quizzical, but within the first couple chapters I said "Oh! This is the author that wrote "the chicken in Chicago book"." (I kind of feel sorry for author Kelly Ohlert that is how I'll probably always remember her.)
Thank you to NetGalley, Kelly Ohlert and Alcove Press the publisher for the opportunity to read the advance read copy of Let's Get Quizzical in exchange for an honest review. Publication date is 17 Oct 2023.
A sweet little romance novel! I saw the authors post about this book on TikTok and decided to give it a request. I thought it was a really cute book! Not ground breaking hence 4 stars, but definitely a good quick read. My one dislike was how fast and easily the characters got over a decades old bad blood that was obviously still hurting, but that was honestly a minor gripe. I really liked that even minor characters developed over the book, as opposed to just the MC developing. I find a lot of romance novels focus too heavily on the MC except to introduce characters for future books, and that was not a problem here
Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for the eArc in exchange for a review.
Alright, this was cute. It was not knock-my-socks-off cute, but there was a certain charm to it. I found the main characters to be mostly loveable, however Charlie's very very devoted mentality to only living with no lies was a bit extreme. I could see how her grandmother really influenced and perpetuated this guilt in her and it made me feel sad for her but also it made some of her reactions a bit annoying. While. yes, lying is bad, of course, there is levels of grey to the world and when your rekindled lover gets blackmailed and you leave him because he had to lie because of the blackmail, then you need to do a deep study of yourself in my opinion.
I did love the little trivia facts between Charlie and Eli, and their chemistry was pretty cute. While not a romance I will be reaching for, I can see a lot of people enjoying it.
