In a plot reminiscent of The Cat in the Hat, Hugo and his friend engage in chaos. Once he discovers he can transform into a dinosaur, he feels free to behave however he likes. After all, who can stop a dinosaur. So the first section of this book will be a bit of wish fulfillment for young readers as Hugo indulges in all of the activities that his parents have forbidden. But it doesn't fully promote recklessness. While Dino continues to create chaos, Hugo begins to have concerns, recognizing the destruction they are causing. So there is an element of personal responsibility as well. Mostly, though, this is just a silly romp that is easily read and understood by kids beginning to read independently.
Super Magic Boy: I Am a Dinosaur introduces readers to Hugo and his buddy Dino. In this early graphic novel, young Hugo transforms into a dinosaur and begins a series of wild and wacky adventures with Dino, including destroying his home, digging for hidden treasure, and encountering a spooky skeleton. By the end of the story, Hugo, Dino, and the skeleton all come together to repair the damage to Hugo’s home.
Readers will love the vibrant illustrations, funny dialogue, and the over-the-top, non-stop action in this one. Roselló’s Red Panda and Moon Bear series is a favorite with our school’s middle grade readers, and I know this series will make our early grade readers into Roselló fans, too.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC to read and review.
This book gave me a serious case of the giggles! My youngest son who is 5 will adore this story. Hugo is funny and charming. His conversation with the characters is delightful and I love how imaginative this story is. It was like being in the mind of an imaginative 5 year old. So many stories seem written for the parents, this was written from a kids perspective in the best way.
I received an electronic ARC from Random House Children's Publishers through NetGalley.
Mid elementary level readers will love the absurdity. Readers meet Hugo, Dino and the Skeleton King as they explore the world around Hugo's home. They even wreck his home and learn to work together to fix everything. The chapters build on each other s the characters learn to cooperate and become friends. Don't miss the bonus story without Dino. I appreciate the drawing instructions included so readers can draw the characters too. A clever way to open their imagination and create their own adventures.
🦕 This is a fun graphic novel chapter book!
🦕 I loved the story – the little boy, Hugo, “transforms” into a dinosaur to be just like his buddy Dino. They have fun, make discoveries, go on rampages, dig holes, find treasures, roar, and more! They even clean up their messes!
🦕 The illustrations are fantastic! Vibrant, dynamic, and full of energy! What else would you expect from a story about a little boy and a dinosaur?! I particularly loved the expressiveness of the characters. It’s over-the-top, but that is what makes it so enjoyable. You can’t help but smile at the fun they are having.
🦕 The book is a great example of where your imagination can take you if you let it! I absolutely think kids would enjoy this book!
Thank you @NetGalley and @RHKidsGraphic for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This is a super fun, early chapter graphic novel. In it, the super magic boy has the ability to transform into anything, and today it’s a dinosaur. He and his friends go on an adventure to find treasure and how to be a good human. The story is just cute and will be adored by many for years to come.
Rosello’s comics delight and entertain young readers and this new entry is sure to do the same. Funny and whimsical, this is a perfect read for reluctant readers.
I love everything I’ve ever seen from Roselló, and I AM A DINOSAUR was no different! The illustrations are dynamic and the dialogue fun, this is going to be huge hit with elementary school readers.
I like the premise of this series and the illustrations are adorable, but I found the text to be somewhat disjointed. The transition from one section to the next felt rushed, and while I really liked the message at the end that it is okay for kids to be more than one thing, I walked away wanting more from the story.
Jarod Roselló can do no wrong! This is a perfect recommendation for younger readers who are starting to get in to graphic novels. Highly recommend for fans of chaotic humor like Mike Lowrey's Bug Scouts series or Ben Clanton's Narwhal and Jelly.
I can't wait to give this to young readers!
