This was cute — a story of friendships, compromising, and “opposite” personalities, but also with a surprisingly great age-appropriate intro to entrepreneurship. I would recommend this for an elementary classroom or library.

I thought the premise of this book would be a lot sillier, but it had a great message. I enjoyed the story and the activity prompts at the back of the book are great for kids.

Horse and Zebra Bake a Cake by Whitney Sanderson and Angelika Scudamore is a wonderful story about two best friends who are completely opposite in personality. They are trying to figure out how to become successful at their new business but they both have different ideas - so the dilemma is, whose ideas are better??

The characters are relatable to children. My own children were so invested in the outcome of the story wondering what was going to happen or whose idea would work out best and I think that is because the characters are easily relatable.

If you want a great story to help teach kids about the value of compromising with their friends then this is the story for you!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this ARC. All opinions are my own.

My 4 year old daughter thought it was okay, it just wasn't very interesting to her, as it didn't hold her attention very well, but the pictures inside were adorable and the storyline was cute. I wouldn't buy it for a gift for my daughter, but I'm sure most kids would like this book.

I really liked this intro to entrepreneurship book for kids. Don’t worry, it’s not boring and younger kids may not understand the business concepts right away, but supply/demand and product improvement are the most forefront topics presented in a sweet story of two friends selling cakes. As a parent, I loved the “book club”/comprehension style questions in the back. Great for engaging with your kiddos or checking their understanding of what they/you read. Furthermore, I loved that there was a recipe to bake after the book! Yet another way to engage with your kiddos! I loved those two activities! I fully intend to make the recipe with my kiddos and hope they are as good and sweet as this little story!

Entrepreneurship with a friend will be fun but it may also lead to compromises, as this fun story shows us! I love that it teaches children about listening to each other, to work together, and how to make compromises! I do feel like there could have been more fluff added to the story. The illustrations are well done, engaging and fun! It is awesome for children to see that we all may have differences, but we can still work together! We will be doing the baking activity at the end of the book, to make their oatcakes.

While I love the sentiment of this one, I feel like Sanderson doesn’t give young children enough credit or backstory. I like Horse and Zebra (alike but different) and I feel as if we need more about their friendship on the pages of this book. Zebra basically tells Horse that no one wants her basic cake recipe and she needs to revamp and refresh who she is! I wish we had an inkling that these were special family cakes before midway through the book.

It felt scattered, rushed, and about 6 pages too short. My kids had a lot of questions about Horse and Zebra and wanted to know more about their fictional lives. Give kids more credit for what they can understand and hold onto in a story!

Thank you NetGalley, North Star Editions and Jolly Fish Press for this ARC. I read this book to my daughter and she enjoyed it. I thought the illustrations were lovely and the lesson behind the story was wonderful. I enjoy reading books that have an underlying important lesson for kiddos but go about it in a fun way. Well done! It makes a great addition to the shelf. 🤍

Horse and Zebra Bake a Cake by Whitley Sanderson really appealed to me.

Angelika Scudamore’s illustrations clearly express the characters’ feelings and convey the story well.

Horse likes to follow a set routine. Zebra operates a bit differently. Will they be able to work together to bake a cake?

There are thoughtful questions for discussion at the end of the story as well as a special recipe that can be made together.

I really enjoyed this book and would be interested in reading more from this author.

Baked goods of any kind can brighten any bad day, if you ask me. In Whitney Sanderson’s beautifully illustrated story Horse runs a successful cake stand and, with the help of his friend Zebra, is trying to expand his business.
At first, his oatcakes fly off of his delivery wagon like, well, oatcakes. But when his customers are asking for variety, Horse runs into a problem: he is not sure how to bring variety into his recipe.
When Zebra tries to help him, things go a bit awry, until the friends figure out the perfect middle ground.

The beautiful illustrations by Angelika Scudamore are the cherry on top for this cute story about friendship and diversity. My favourite has to be the illustration of all the animals happily munching on the oatcakes.

The book also comes with a recipe to recreate the oatcakes with your kids, which is just the best idea!

Thanks to NetGalley and Jolly Fish Press for the advanced copy of this book.
Horse and Zebra Bake A Cake will be available on August 1, 2023.

Another winner from Horse and Zebra who have different approaches to life but that is perfectly ok. Lovely story about how horse knows how to make one type of cake while Zebra is a bit wild and adds everything to attract customers. In the end a compromise is the way to go forward.
We love Horse and Zebra

Thank you to NetGalley and Jolly Fish Press for a review copy of this book.

This is such a cute book with great illustrations about change and compromise. Horse and Zebra just couldn't agree on changing the oatcake recipe. They had to stop and work out a compromise. I enjoy when children's books about foods that may not be commonplace, i.e. oatcakes, contain recipes. I look forward to making these with my daughter (maybe with a few additions!).

I loved the illustrations of this book, some of the best I have seen lately, simple, clean, and fun! However, the writing was just okay, it left more to be desired. The book itself was cute and helps kids understand the importance of listening and compromising with one another. My kids all enjoyed the book (Ages 6,4,2).

Horse and Zebra decide to bake a cake. Each makes their perfect cake, but they are not good for the other. After trying, Horse and Zebra learn to compromise and work together to make a cake that both like.
This book shows why it is good to work together.

This is a sweet story about friendship, entrepreneurship, and compromise. Horse and Zebra are BFFs and decide to start their own business. Their personalities are very different but they figure out a way to make their business work. Horse makes delicious oatcakes and Zerba takes them to market on a cake wagon to sell.

At first their business booms but soon their friends get tired and bored of just one flavour and the sales drop. With creativity and imagination the two compromise and come up with a winning plan and they are off to races.

The extras at the end of the book are fun and engaging: discussion questions and a baking activity which is a nice add-on. Kids will learn the importance of working together despite other's differences. It is an important life lesson to learn early on.

The fun black and white illustrations marry perfectly with the simple understandable text. I love the book and highly recommend it.

Thank you so much to Jolly Fish Press and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Zebra sees Horse struggling to get his cakes to everyone in town so volunteers to deliver them. Then everyone complains that the cakes are boring being the same ones each day. But together they can come up with the perfect solution.

This was cute and a great whimsical read for young children, it’s funny and comes with great illustrations. Tells a simple but interesting story that young kids will enjoy.

I really liked the friendship element between Horse and Zebra and that they tried together to make things work out even though neither knew what was best to do. I really loved all the animal characters and their reactions to the cakes.

The illustrations were really fun to look at, the bunnies were adorable, I really enjoyed seeing all the animals illustrated throughout the story. I think this is a great early reader, it’s so much fun and it’s easy to follow and read, young children will definitely have fun with this book.
