When I’m Dead reeled me in right away with Chloe, a young actress starring in a high school play stands watching her parents, a homicide detective and a medical examiner, leaving her play for yet another homicide. She verbalized that, “You will love me more when I’m dead”. A very prophetic statement it turns out to be.
Black Harbor seems to be a difficult place to live - especially for some of the girls in Chloe’s class. Once Chloe goes missing as well the twists and turns begin. I found her story and Libby’s story very compelling.
I have to admit that I had difficulty connecting with either of her parents throughout this read. I kept thinking “What if…” while reading this story. I did appreciate the ending.
I have not read the first 2 books in the series it may have hampered my understanding of the family dynamics.
Many thanks to Hannah Morrissey, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for affording me the opportunity to read an arc of this recently published book.

When I'm Dead by Hannah Morrissey is a gripping and eerie tale with lots of twists and turns. It's got a mix of all tropes a thriller / mysery fan would enjoy: murder, kidnapping, unsolved cases, and more.

My only issue with this book is that the interpersonal drama starts to become more convoluted. As a reader, I could tell that the plot lines would have no lasting effect on the ending or the final climax. So it started to drag and didn't feel interesting enough to kepe me hooked the whole time.

The ending also lost the emotional impact I was expecting. However, still a fairly engaging thriller!

This is a series however it can also be read as a stand alone. One girl is found murdered and her best friend is now missing! This was written from multiple POVs, which I loved! I loved reading what each character was thinking on who did it or what happened. I seriously did not guess the ending! This book gave me criminal mind vibes and I loved the creepiness of it! I really enjoyed the writing in this book and the description of the town of Black Harbor! You definitely need to give it a try!

Read this book if you like a criminal procedural, criminal minds, multiple POV, and family secrets/drama!

This was my first Hannah Morrissey book, I wasn't aware it was the third in a series! It definitely works as a stand alone, but I'm sure the previous books would have added more background and context. I'm typically a big fan of books featuring medical examiners as the main character, however can't say I loved When I'm Dead.

It may be because I hadn't read the first books of the series but I just did not care for either Rowan or Axel...they were so unappealing as people. The it's story was fine but nothing groundbreaking. I'd give it 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

Thank you to Netgalley and Minotaur Books for an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first book in the A Black Harbor Novel. I didn’t realize it was book 3 in a series when I requested When I’m Dead. However, it wasn’t necessary to read the others first. I plan on going back and reading the other two. The book had many twists and turns and kept me guessing. Thank you #NetGalley, #StMartin’sPress, #HannahMorrisey and #WhenI’mDead:ABlackHarborNovel for the copy for my honest review.

This was my first book to read by this author but it won't be my last! This was a beautifully written novel that evokes so many emotions and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Don't miss out on this one!

I love Black Harbor! This was just as gripping as her previous books, I loved the different POVs as well as just the absolute dread I felt while reading this book. I mean that in the best way! The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars, is I felt Rowan’s reference to something that happened 18 years ago was so irrelevant it just made me not like her. Other than that, I can’t wait for more Black Harbor!

Would recommend for fans off…
🔎 Midwestern settings
🔎 Tana French
🔎 Riverdale (before it went off the tracks)

Hannah Morrissey’s Black Harbor novels have been a pleasant surprise in the crime fiction world over the past few years. They’re gritty and dark but do an excellent job of illustrating how violent crimes affect communities and those tasked with investigating.

When I’m Dead is another excellent entry in the series. It’s focused on medical examiner Rowan and her missing daughter, who’s either a murderer or the next victim. The story is a crime novel through and through, but I liked the elements of family drama that were interspersed. There are multiple POVs throughout the book, which is always something I love in crime fiction, and Morrissey uses these perspectives to weave the mystery in a way that keeps you invested in the story.

While this is the third novel in a series, the Black Harbor books are structured a lot like Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series. Characters appear across books with a new one taking the lead each time, but the mysteries themselves are standalones and can be enjoyed without reading in order. There are plenty of Easter eggs who have read the books in order though!

When I’m Dead is out now. Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Okay look I’m not an animal, but I accidently started this series on book three. Of course I’ll head directly to book one.

Had a lot of fun with this one and can’t wait to continue on with this author and the series.

I have loved each and every one of the books in the Black Harbor series and my goodness I think When I’m Dead is my favorite. You can read each of these as a standalone (but why would you), and both the case and the characters in this one were fantastic. It starts off with a bang as Medical Examiner Rowan Winthorp is called away from her daughter’s event to investigate the death of her daughter’s best friend. But she soon realizes her daughter did not make it home, is now missing, and everything immediately escalates as the race is on to find her daughter as well as learn what happened to her best friend. This was incredibly well developed, suspenseful, and let me tell you I could NOT put this one down. I listened to the audiobook which was fantastic, and followed along with the book and it was just a wonderful experience that I did not want to end.

I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series, and Morrissey is firmly on my auto read / auto buy list. Thank you to Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for the copies to review.

Special thanks to @hannahmorrisseywriter & @netgalley for this ARC.

I loved this storyline! Not as much as Hello Transcriber, but more than The Widowmaker.
It's plays out like a game of cat and mouse with many possibilities for the cats and, unfortunately, 2 unwilling participants for the mice, but it's Black Harbor - of course, they were unwilling.

This story line again involves my fav; Sergeant Kole, but focuses more on Detective Axel & Medical Examiner Rowan trying to find their daughter after they find out she's missing and her "best friend" is dead. As more bodies show up and Chloe is still missing.....all signs point toward multiple people. But nothing is black & white. Was Chloe who they knew her to be? And Rowan might have more secrets than she's led on.

This has multiple POV chapters, which adds for some extra suspense in the storyline that I absolutely loved.
The Black Harbor series has been my favorite series I've read this year. This was a great story to end it with! I can't wait to discuss this soon with Hannah herself! 😱😱😱

When I’m Dead is a tightly woven thriller about a lonely young girl that goes missing the night her parents are called away to investigate a teenagers murder. Chloe always feels abandoned by her parents hectic and challenging jobs as the couple both work for the local PD one as a coroner and the other as a homicide investigator. On the night of Chloe’s school play they have to leave and as her mother apologizes once again Chloe remarks you’ll love me more when I’m dead.

This proves to be an ominous statement as mid investigation they realize Chloe has disappeared. With one girl dead and now there daughter missing the case amplifies. Nd with a shortage of investigators they must remain in the case despite the conflict of interests the causes.

This doesn’t read a true police procedural as obviously things couldn’t play out this way in a real investigation but it makes for a gritty and dark thriller non the less. As Chloe’s parents try to beat the clock stop a killer and try to find Chloe dark truths must be answered and explored and in a small town few things are what they seem.

Good read definitely enjoyed it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.

I love a good fast paced mystery. Although I wasn't. Shocked about our assailant I was surprised by the details and isn't all about the details?
Over all the book was good. I am interested in reading the first two books in the series as I hasn't yet, I donwish there wasn't as predictable.

When I’m Dead is the third book in the Black Harbor series. Two girls end up dead and another goes missing. The missing girl happens to be the daughter of a cop and medical examiner. All three were supposed friends but soon it’s uncovered that after one gets the school plays coveted lead role things get nasty. Is this a case of revenge or something much more sinister? A fast paced well written backdrop of a city rift with crime and a family trying desperately to get out. A definite 5 star. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this series.

Thank you Netgalley for this arc

Review: When I'm Dead by Hannah Morrissey
Swipe for Goodreads synopsis

"You'll love me more when I'm dead" were Chloe's last words to her mother before she went missing walking home from the school play. Now medical examiner Rown Winthrop and her detective husband Axel are desperately searching for Chloe before it's too late.

I have been a big fan of Morrissey's Black Harbor series ever since I read Hello, Transcriber last year. Morrissey's ability to transport the reader to the cold, dreary city of Black Harbor, WI never ceases to impress me, and this book is no exception. Morrissey is a gorgeous writer, and I just love reading every book she writes.

I really liked this new story. I could totally feel for Rowan and Axel and their desperation as they search for their daughter. Although I found the villain to be a bit obvious, at least for me, their motivation was certainly unexpected.

All in all, another solid book from Morrissey, and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!

Stars: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This story is told in third person following parents Rowan and Axel as well as a neighbor teenager, Libby. This book is the third in a series however I’ve heard that it can be read as a standalone since the characters and mystery are different in each book. I still have the feeling that I may have been spoiled to part of the endings of the first two books. I’m not sure what the purpose of mentioned past characters and their current situations did for this story other than to explain why Black Harbor is such a den of crime and I still didn’t have a feel for that dark ambiance that I was expecting.

Rowan and Axel both work in law enforcement in some capacity and I thought they would be working together to look for their missing daughter. Instead, they often let differences of opinion on certain aspects of the investigation and other personal issues divide their focus, which while understandable, didn’t do their search any favors. This might have worked better for me if they shared information and collaborated on finding their daughter rather than get fixated on one aspect of the investigation. I’m not even going to address the conflict of interest here.

In addition, I thought the perpetrator was obvious the second they appeared on page for me. Still, I enjoyed the characters and their separate journeys to uncovering the truth. Rowan’s reasoning on why this is happening and how it relates to her past gave the story an emotional connection in addition to that of a mother with a missing child.

Recommended to readers who enjoy missing persons cases that are more interested in the emotional repercussions than procedures.

When a local teenage girl is murdered in the crime-ridden city of Black Harbor, WI, medical examiner, Rowan, is called to the scene with her detective husband, Axel, and they discover that the dead girl is their daughter’s best friend. When they return home, they find their daughter, Chloe, is missing too. A web of secrets comes to light as the couple investigate Chloe’s disappearance and the murder, and they realize there is a lot they didn’t know about their child.

I thoroughly enjoyed When I’m Dead by Hannah Morrissey. I read it in 2 sittings because I had trouble putting it down. This book was a fun, fast-paced ride. As a Wisconsinite, I love reading books set there, even though Black Harbor sounds like a scary place to be. Rowan and Axel were good characters to lead the story and I loved the switching of the POVs. It was a very effective way of unraveling the mystery and the twists. While I was able to figure out who-dunnit before the big reveal, the why was a surprise to me and I still found the ending to be satisfying. Over all, this was a fun, classic murder mystery with a modern flair, and I would love to go back and read the other companion novels in this series.

Although I didn’t realize this book was 3rd in the series I had no trouble following along. I’ll definitely be starting from the beginning. The author did a a great job engaging me and keeping me invested in the characters. I love when subtle hints get dropped helping you guess the perpetrator. I did guess it but the details where so much more than I thought.

This was my first book by the author and while I was invested, I just didn't feel the "pull" to pick this book up after setting it down. I finished and ended up liking it, it just wasn't a favorite.

I loved the setting of this book and it felt SO spooky. I also thought that it was pretty fast paced. I just personally didn't love the characters or care much about them which made it hard to keep reading.
