Did not realize this was book three in the Black Harbor series going in, but it didn't matter. And I'm actually happy about that because I really liked this book and the other two books in the series are on my TBR, so now I know I'll end up enjoying those as well. Win-win. Anyway, I love a good detective story and gave this one 4 stars
I don't really know why but I couldn't get into this book. I think I should've read the other Black Harbor novels before reading this one. I'm sure it's more enjoyable if you're invested in the town and the people, but I just was not. Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for this ARC!
I had a hard time getting into this one. I ended up listening to the audiobook and it did help some. I think part of the problem was all of the different points of views. While I usually love a book that has multiple POVs, I felt like there were one or two too many in this book.
When I received this complimentary copy I was excited to have all 3 Black Harbor books that I could read consecutively, and that is exactly what I did. They can be read as stand alone books since they each have their own individual storyline with minimal character overlap. This book from the go dived right in to the action starting with a dead body! Told in multiple POV's the storyline kept pretty intense throughout the whole book.
Rowan the medical examiner and her husband Axel the homicide detective go on a hunt to find who is leaving dead bodies around Black Harbor while trying to find their daughter Chloe who is missing and hoping to find her alive and not another victim in the string of murders! Rowan is struggling with her past thinking Karma has come to collect a daughter for a daughter while also trying to figure out who her daughter actually is underneath the surface while chasing a murderer and keeping her marriage afloat!
There is so much going on in this book, but it is easy to follow along, the writing is superb, and I love the darkness that Morrissey taps into with her storylines! I love all 3 books and their uniqueness to be so puzzling, intense, twisted, and compelling! I am here for whatever she has next! I wish I could sit and watch her put together her "murder board" and watch her creativity come to life after being enthralled with her books! I love all the secrets Black Harbor holds and the secrets of those that live in it!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Minotaur Books for the copy to read and give my honest feedback on... I can't wait for what happens next in Black Harbor!!
*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review*
Dark, tense thriller - thoroughly entertaining!
When I'm Dead was a thriller I couldn't wait to read as the weather turned warmer. I wanted to crack a case and dive into Hannah Morrissey's life. However; I couldn't get into the novel with the pacing and unremarkable town. Unfortunately, I ended up giving up on this book at the ten percent mark.
When I'm Dead is another great addition to the Black Harbor series!
While this can be read as a standalone, I suggest you read the other installments to get the most out of your reading experience. And because they're awesome.
Rowan, a medical examiner and her detective husband find themselves at the crime scene of their daughter's best friend , only to learn that their daughter Chloe is missing.
The bleak and haunting atmosphere of Black Harbor is a character on its own. Its darkness and hopelessness is materialized in the crimes and through the characters.
When I'm Dead is a great mix of police procedural and thriller. The characters are complex and the plot is twisty with red herrings, secrets and lies woven throughout the story.
Another great read by Hannah Morrisey!
Thank you to Minotaur and NetGalley for the gifted e-arc. BOTM copy featured was purchased by me.
My first Hannah Morrissey book and I went back and grabber the rest of this series. Yes, I read out of order.
I was on the edge of my seat with this book! I highly recommend it!!!!!
Enjoyable book that kept me thinking and guessing throughout.
I wish there were a few less narrators as I feel it was more confusing jumping around to so many people while reading. I think some of this may have been to keep you wondering about motives and involvement but it made the book a bit busy.
Definitely willing to read more from this author!
Thank you Netgalley, author , St.Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books for sharing the ARC.
When a popular teenage high schooler is violently murdered on October night in the small town of Black Harbor, Wisconsin. It unearths loads of mysteries following the death, another missing teenage friend of the victim, more deaths and several suspects. Medical Examiner Rowan Winthrop & her cop husband Axel dig through the morbid puzzles to try and get a picture of what’s going on . This case is even more crucial as it’s their daughter involved smack in the middle of the whole case. Will they be able to get to the bottom of this case before it’s too late ?
This is the first book from this author for me and I absolutely enjoyed it. It’s fast paced , tense and chilling . There is so much going on through the whole story that as a reader I was engrossed and trying to figure out who’s responsible? The conflict the main characters feel as parents who’s child is in trouble , the guilt they feel as they realize they weren’t aware of lot of incidents happening in their child’s life were very well done and added to the dramatic component. The arrow of suspicion kept moving to various characters in the story and kept me wondering who’s responsible?
If you like police procedural psychological thrillers or like shows like Criminal Minds , CSI you’ll like this one .
It’s also a good pick for someone who’s new to thrillers and / or wants a fast paced quick read .
This is a 4/5 ⭐️read for me .
Definitely going to look into the backlist of this author .
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read other books by this author. I must say I was hooked from page one. I loved the characters and the twists were great.
When I'm Dead by Hannah Morrissey - Oh, this one was fun. I think it was my favorite out of the series. But, even though it's my favorite, it still felt like it was missing something. The crappy kids being crappy to other kids is always a great plot, though. I liked that one POV was from the Medical Examiner, too.
This audiobook is narrated by Andrew Eiden, Caitlin Kelly, Gary Tiedemann & Xe Sands

This book kept me interested from the beginning. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for th ARC.
This was a DNF for me. I typically like thrillers, but this one was just too impractical. I felt like I was screaming at the wall the entire time because, yes, this is fiction, but it's too much fiction for even fiction at this point. It's entertaining if you don't think about how impractical/improbable the whole thing is, but logic was thrown a bit too far out of the window for me.
3.5, rounded down
I would like to start this off by saying I have not read the first two books in the series. I saw multiple reviews saying you can read this just fine as a standalone, and while that's not technically wrong, I felt like I missed a lot of backstory but not reading the first two books first.
I struggled for roughly 80% of the book before it picked up. I forced myself to push through and finish and I'm glad I did. The ending redeemed the book for me a bit and quite frankly is the only reason I have this at 3.5 stars.
I really struggled to connect with the main characters. Maybe I would've connected more if I had read the previous books, but I'm unsure. I just couldn't get onboard with Rowan and Axel, especially after they were so nonchalant about their daughter's disappearance. It was rather off putting to me and I just felt zero connection with them.
The end though did pick up quite a bit, and while rather unrealistic, it was still enjoyable and had me gripped. Gripped enough to jump my rating up from 2 stars to 3.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had compelling characters and a storyline that in theory, was super interesting and right in my reading sweet spot. I also have enjoyed the author’s prior books. But this one just didn’t do it for me. I struggled to get into the book, struggled to care about the characters, and struggled to care what happened next.
So for now, I’ll put it down and try again later. I don’t think this is a permanent DNF, but it’s a “let it simmer for a few months” hold on reading.
When I am Dead was the third book from the Black Harbor series. I have not read the first two and even though some other reviews said that this can be read as a stand alone, I beg to disagree. Because there were enough reference to the first two books that made me wished that had I read the first two, I might have a different and more favorable experience. I struggled to finish and that is to say the least.
Rated 2stars. There's a plot, it is written well and I would say maybe this book was just not for me.
The third book in the Black Harbor series brings us back into medical examiner Rowan Winthrop’s world as she investigates the death of her daughter’s best friend. I really want to love this series but am finding that I am not the biggest fan of Hannah Morrissey’s writing style. The storyline is good and the characters are difficult to like but entertaining however the writing falls a little short for me. The good news is each book while tied together in a way can be read as stand alone titles.
Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Hannah Morrissey
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.
2.5 stars rounded up. This was a fine police procedural. I didn't read the first two books, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything since this is a standalone. This book felt very repetitive at times. I put it down for a while, picked it back up and felt a little frustrated that I felt the story wasn't really progressing. I tried some of the audiobook, and the narrator for Rowan was almost a little hard for me to understand at times. I felt she didn't enunciate as much as an audiobook narrator should, and I found myself turning the volume up on those chapters to better understand her. I also felt like I couldn't get a good grasp on the city of Black Harbor - with the numbers of murders that apparently happen on a regular basis, it sounded like Gotham City. It didn't feel realistic, and then I had a hard time reconciling it with the expensive private school that the children attended. It just felt like two different worlds and I think we should have either stayed in the crime-ridden environment or made the switch to a wealthy area with fancy private schools.
