Jones takes on the cutthroat, dishonest and manipulative world of the tabloids in England. The reader has the opportunity to see how the search for sensational stories leads the main character, .Jess, to almost lose her life.
The reader is also shown how the relentless digging and pressure cost the life of a subject. It is a very timely novel now, considering the lawsuit brought by Prince Harry and the involvement of the tabloids in the scandals of Donald Trump.
I enjoyed reading about the inner workings of this group of shark’s masquerading as journalists. I certainly think this is an interesting book, well worth reading, discussing and remembering how stories are created.
Thank you Netgalley for this interesting and unusual book.
I enjoyed this book, but it definitely wasn’t as good as Jones’ previous books. The story alternated between two journalist’s POV. When I was reading, I tended to get a few of the characters mixed up. The premise of the newspaper owner/sexual predator using his position as a lure. However, the story was very Harvey Weinstein/Roger Ailes-esque. Another story was worked in, but it made the book feel somewhat disjointed instead of enhancing the story.
Thank you for and advanced copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
Not my favorite of Sandie Jones’ books. While the premise was interesting, the storytelling itself felt very choppy. I also felt like the character development was lacking- you never really know who is worth sympathizing with or who is morally in the wrong (all of them?). I think there was a lot of potential with this plot line if it was a bit more streamlined and character-focused.
Fast paced and with enough moving pieces to capture my interest, but...at a certain point, a bit silly, frankly.
The Trade Off by Sandie Jones takes us to the world of tabloid journalism. Stella the deputy editor of The Globe and what she will do to get a story. Jess the rookie reporter with ideals. Each chapter alternates between the two. A very realistic view of journalism. Storyline, deadlines, interviews, CEO and murder are all covered in this book. The characters are very real. Stella a seasoned reporter and Jess a naïve reporter will take you on a journey. I recommend this story. Thank you NetGalley for letting me review this book.
I am definitely a fan of Sandie Jones and highly anticipated her newest novel, The Trade Off. She definitely came through with another twisty unpredictable thriller.
Jess, an innocent journalist, is thrust into a corrupt world of journalism at her new job at The Globe in London. The drama never ends and the characters are richly developed. Some characters I loved and some I couldn't figure out if I loved or hated.
I highly recommend this novel for anyone who loves a fast paced action packed thriller that will have you glued until the end.
This book has some great current event themes. Whereas you will be slightly confused with some things at the beginning, and you very well might think you know what is going on, in the end you will not! This story is well written and has just enough suspense to keep the reader guessing!
Review in progress and to come.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
I typically really like books by Sandi Jones but this book just didn't work for me. I don't know if it was the plot of a "dirty rag magazine,", but I just didn't feel anything for the characters at all. Pick up one of her other books, they are much better! Thank you @netgalley for this opportunity to read this ARC
First off thanks to netgalley for providing me an ARC!
After a confusing interview, Jess is starting her new job at The Globe as a journalist. Her boss Stella is intense. Jess finds the place is doing some sketchy things and confides in the editor Max, who enlists her to keep watch.
Stella finds out a man who one of her articles got him sentenced to jail is being released. Which is leading her to be cautious.
Jess was tasked with getting close to Yasmin, a famous chef. After a night out partying with her and learning about her life, an article was published with a risky photo of Yasmin that will ruin her career. Jess went to speak with her but instead finds that she killed herself. The Globe and Stella were the cause of this, and Jess must take them down.
Overall the book was good. It took me a bit to get into it, but it had a great ending.
4.5 ⭐️ To what lengths will a tabloid go to get a story? Jess is a naive girl with morals who wants the tabloids to tell the truth. Stella is ruthless and immoral and will do what needs to be done to get the story. This is a fast-paced thriller that tells the story of tragic events that unfolded to make these women work together to expose corrupt men in the workplace. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
The Trade Off by Sandie Jones gives insight into the cutthroat world of journalism and the race and struggle for the next headline and story--truth or lie. Stella, Max, Peter and Jess all involved in reporting, manipulating, and eventually with crimes and deaths on their consciences or maybe not. This novel keeps you reading--cheering for right to win.
Stella, the deputy editor of The Globe, has always put getting the best story first, no matter what. Jess, a new reporter at The Globe, is committed to stopping her story once she reaches the truth. However, Jess understands that it will be challenging to expose the tabloid's dirty tactics.
When a celebrity is relentlessly pursued by The Globe and suffers the ultimate consequences, Jess questions the extent of Stella and the paper's culpability. Determined to reveal the tabloid's true nature to the world, Jess will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, but she must remain cautious, as someone is willing to kill to keep it hidden.
Jess has just been hired by The Globe. She's excited until she realizes the lengths these journalists go to in order to get these stories. When their actions lead to the suicide of a celebrity she's determined to change things for the better.
I loved it! Fast paced and action packed!

Thanks to NetGalley and Sandie Jones for the advanced copy. I have come to love Sandie Jones writing and this book did not disappoint. She keeps you guessing.
I received a free copy of, The Trade Off, by Sandra Jones, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Jess and Stella work work at The Globe together, one a deputy editor the other a rookie reporter. Do whatever it takes to get the story is how the newspaper world seems to work. No matter if you do it illegally or not. This book had a lot of twists and turns in it. A good read.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Jess is excited to be hired at the Globe and is shocked when she discovers how stories are set upon, arranged, or done anyway to get the story.- even ruining people’s lives. She vows she will do everything to change things- to have a good newspaper but she has no idea who or what she is up against or if they would kill to keep her from revealing the truth. What an great read!
I am trying not to be negative, but this book was terrible. It really didn't make much sense to me. And I've read other books by Sandie Jones and enjoyed them. But the set up for this book was wrong from the get-go. It didn't make any sense why Jess was plucked from her job at a small local newspaper to work for a major tabloid. She had very little experience, wasn't a rising star or standout in any way, and she was so naive. She mentions several times how naive she is, but she is beyond naive, naive to the point that I'm not sure she ever read a tabloid newspaper in her life. The rest of the characters and the writing are full of cliches and I never understand any of the actions these characters take or decisions they make. Disappointing.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Trade Off. There were several subplots that made the story suspenseful and fast-paced. Perhaps because there was so much going on and it read so fast, the characters felt very underdeveloped, which made it hard to feel fully engaged with the story. I appreciated the twist, and enjoyed the ending, but I also finished the book feeling like there were some loose ends. That said, I am a huge fan of Sandie Jones and would recommend her latest book!
I'm unsure how I feel about this one honestly. I didn't dislike it. It just didn't have the shocking twist as some of her other books do.
There are a few pieces of the story that I would have liked to have known what the outcome was. I didn't find any of the characters likable until I was 1/2 way through the novel. Then I was all "girl power"!
Nevertheless, I read through it quickly. I would say I enjoyed it. Moderate sexual content. Moderate profanity.
