Thank you to NetGalley and Tor for providing me this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
Life in Greencreek is never quite normal. With the Bennett family pack, it’s even less so. But the story doesn’t start with Ox and Joe. In this installment of the Greencreek novels we follow the story of Gordo and Mark. Gordo knew from a young age that he was a witch and the Bennetts were his pack. What Gordo didn’t know is that he would be a mate to pack member Mark. As we move forward with the series, we are taken back in time to the beginning of their story.
I’ve taken quite some time to review this book. The first book was interesting but I could not get over the “age gap” between Ox and Joe. To see this similar path take place between Mark and Gordo makes me really question the intentions behind these stories. This play on “age is just a number” makes me uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I have to DNF this book. I had a feeling I would end up doing so and I put off the inevitable. The continuous disregard for age makes me worry. I know it’s just a made up story but at least make the characters of consenting age. I do love the story but not enough to waiver on my own ethics. This will sadly be the end of my Greencreek journey.
I loved the first book in this series and was eager to get my hand on the next in the series. It didn’t disappoint- looking forward to the next installment
I wasn't sure it was possible to love this book even more than I loved Wolfsong, but here we are. Gordo is the sweetest little grumpy witch ever and he deserves the world.
I about lost my mind at that ending though. The Bennett packs story is FAR from over and I am so here for it. I just know this is going to hurt.
TJ Klune has done it again. I have yet to read a book by TJ Klune that I have not liked.
I loved this book so much. It made me tear up but also made me giggle a few times.
I love Wolfsong and I wasn’t sure any character could top Ox in this series. But Gordo has come in with a close second.
I still need to work through my feelings. That’s why this is a vague review. But I can definitely say I LOVED IT!! And you should totally read this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Publishing Group for the ARC of Ravensong!
This book begins by rehashing much of the plot from the previous book through Gordo's perspective before moving on to how the packs are adjusting to merging into one pack under two alphas. More and more trouble keeps coming their way as they learn with devastating consequences that all is not as it seems with the upper echelon of werewolf politics.
Gordo was one of my favorite characters from the first book so I was hoping to enjoy this one more than Wolfsong and I definitely did. I still don't think Klune's writing is for me but I am now invested enough in this story that I think I will continue the series. The plot of the stories are interesting but the characters are so hung up in their emotional drama with each other. And there is so much repetition in the writing. Granted, I have listened to both of the books in this series on audio so I think the repetitiveness is probably more annoying to listen to than it is to physically read. Gordo's human friends are probably my favorite part of the series as their comedy helps to lift the tone of the book from melancholic romantic pining.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book! I will be posting my review on social media, to include Instagram, Amazon, Goodreads, and Instagram!
I had mixed feelings about the first book. I loved the overall story, but just didn't vibe with some of the elements, like the weird age gap relationship. I gave this one a chance and actually thought it was better. There are still some issues, some more obvious than others.
As for the actual story, I liked Gordo's POV and thought the overall story was good. However, it's just too long and the story doesn't justify it. It definitely dragged quite a bit and took me forever to read even though I'm generally a quick reader.
Ever since I read Wolfsong the Bennett family hasn't been far from my thoughts. The Green Creek series is one of those tales that tears you down time and time again only to always build you up higher and higher. I was excited to move to Mark and Gordo' and see what had happed all those years ago. I liked that it started at the beginning of Gordo's story and that I got to learn why he was the way that he was in book one. I was also very happy to see that the two years that they hunted down Richard Collins and that it brought a lot of clarity with somethings that were maybe just left unspoken in book 1. I love the Bennett Pack. These are characters with so much depth and development that they stick with you. The world building as per Klune is wonderful, and I think that the story line with the Omegas and the betrayal that they uncover was both great and absolutely intense. There were definitely times in this book where I laughed out loud, cried from both sadness and happiness, and raged on behalf of the Bennetts. My heart was fully immersed in this book, and I am so happy to be moving on to the next book in the series as I know that it will be another amazing journey and experience.
I love everything TJ Klune writes and this series is no exception! I'm so glad Tor has republished these books so that they reach a wider audience. I'm very much looking forward to continuing the Green Creek series! Thanks for the arc!
Ravensong continues from the events of Wolfsong but this time it centers on Gordo, the pack’s witch (or is he). It was an alternate to present time Gordo to child Gordo giving us an understanding of what he went through and why he hates the Bennets so much. A lot of trigger warning for this story so make sure to find out the TWs. This was a lot better than the first one in my opinion. I think team human made this bearable than the first book.
Thank you Netgalley and Tor Publishing Group for the advance copy in return of my honest review.
If you liked the first book in the series, you will likely like this one too. I like that this one focused more on Gordo. Looking forward to book three!
Unfortunately I had to DNF the first book in this series , Wolfsong . I’m realizing this series just might be too YA for me and I’m finding I just can’t get into it . I know this series is really popular and have no doubt it will continue to receive all the love , but it’s just not for me .
I enjoyed the first book in the series and was excited to read this installment, but it fell short for me. Gordo is interesting, but the book really goes on for far too long and seems to drag. The writing is lovely and enjoyable to read, but the story doesn't seem to have enough content to support the prose.
5/5 Stars
Another fantastic read from TJ Klune. This is the second book in The Green Creek series and I adored it. The continued conflict from the first book kept my attention and the characters as they did in the first book took my heart. Gordo and Mark's story gave me all the feels. Honestly, this series has a hold on me and I never want to leave it. Can't wait to read the next book so that I can get wrecked.
Unfortunately, I was not the biggest fan of the second book in this series. I think this is mostly a personal matter, for I still appreciate TJ Klunes writing style and the way he always makes a book feel very ‘light’. I definitely think that if you were very excited about the first book and are looking for more insights about the characters , you would like Ravensong, I, however, was not impressed by this backstory.
I’m sure this will resonate with many readers out there, but it just wasn’t possible for me despite my best attempts.
Repeating this from my Wolfsong review:
Here's the thing: I have some very complicated feelings about TJ Klune in general and they have gotten more complicated since I first requested this book as an ARC.
Ravensong:
While the overall narrative of the Green Creek series was still pretty darn compelling, I think there were some diminishing returns in book two. While I can appreciate the use of repetition, calling back and echoes - it was just too much and felt forced. Like it was trying to replicate the magic of the first book but falling short. I might have given this a more enthusiastic three stars rather than rounding up but there is just so much misogyny and vulgarity and low-key racist depictions. And since one of the major reasons I decided to continue reading was to see how Gordo and Mark would work out, they basically spend 90% of the book apart so that was disappointing. I lost track of the action in a few places and ended up skimming a lot because also this book is way too long.
Will I keep reading? I don't know. I these books are so long and the obligation I feel because I got an ARC was what really got me motivated to read. We'll see if I get curious about seeing how the overall narrative concludes.
This whole series was amazing. I loved reading about Mark and Gordo's story and their history. Your heart breaks for both of them and what they went through because of Thomas' decisions. Outside of their relationship the main storyline progressed so well and it ends in a very large and concerning cliffhanger.
Gordo Livingstone is a witch who has lost his pack twice. He's been putting his life back together when his pack returns, but he can't forgive them for leaving him. Trouble is knocking on the doorstep of Green Creek and Gordo needs to decide whether he will work with his pack to save his town or let them fight without him.
I struggled with this book. I found the first half so slow that I almost gave up on it. Maybe I waited too long between reading Wolfsong and Ravensong, but it took me a very long time to get back into the story. However, the second half really captivated me. I'm jumping right into Heartsong now so I hope by staying in the Green Creek world I will be able to skip that confusion I felt in this one. Overall, I don't know quite what to rate this. I think it would be higher if I had read Wolfsong immediately before this one.
