This is the second installment in the Green Creek series, and just as good as Wolfsong. Any fans of the first novel will definitely enjoy this one.
This book follows Gordo Livingston. The first half of the book has flashbacks so you get his back story and learn a lot more of what happened when he and the Bennett brothers left during the first book. The second half of the book is when trouble returns to Green Creek, Gordo confronting his history, and the relationship between Mark and Gordo.
This book has the same characters we love, the same sarcastic banter, and more action and romantic LGBTQ+ relationships. There was even a passing reference to one of the humans being aro if I remember correctly. Strong themes of found family and queer relationships.
The age difference when Gordo and Mark when they were younger may still trigger some, although it seemed less cringy than with Ox and Joe. There’s also some TWs for torture and violence.
Overall really recommend for anyone who likes Klune books and enjoyed the first in the series. You won’t be disappointed. I’m anxiously awaiting the third.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a fan of TJ Klune's writing ability and emotional depth, this book did not disappoint. The found family trope never fails to comfort and support while in stressful times.
This one was not as good as Wolfsong, but as a self contained review, it was wonderful. I loved it. Again, this was a story of found family, as with most of Klune's books, this was a story of trauma, regret, anger, and forgiveness. i loved Mark and Gordo in the first book and I knew this was coming, so I enjoyed seeing them be together. Although the name Gordo threw me off cause all I could imagine was Lizzy McGuire Gordo and I can't ever imagine screaming Gordo and feeling like it was sexy, but I guess it works for Mark. The magic itself is pretty cool and well done, the world building is pretty epic and awesome, and getting a glimpse of lost characters was wonderful as well. I am satisfied upon finishing this book and already have plans to read the next ones. I am taking away a star because of the things below.
This one didn't have a slight creepy "grooming vibe" as Wolfsong did. While I do love the queer romance and adore the representation, it's a little annoying that the female characters are stereotypes. As much as the male characters break gender norms, it feels like the women are stuck on the extreme sides of the spectrum as a perfect mother or as an annoying girlfriend. One of the women is literally named Bambi and she is blonde with "huge fake tits". smh. As much as I love Elizabeth, she just comes off as too perfect and sometimes too weak, even though she's supposed to be a warrior in her own right. I was hoping that in the second book of the series, there would be more character development and screen time for the women, but alas, TJ is one tracked minded.
Also, statistically, it doesn't really make sense that a family would birth three boys and ALL of them would end up in a queer relationship. I love the gays, but honestly, I think this is just a little much. It just sort of shows that Klune doesn't really like nor care to write "straight" romance. I know there's a lot of that out there, but with so many members of the pack, it just seems odd that we don't get any of the women's stories and that Klune has made all his male MC's end up with men. Maybe one day he will allow us to see Thomas and Elizabeth's story, and prove me wrong. I want to believe that a writer who has such depth of emotion values and respects women as more than just child bearing perfection or annoying bimbos. There also isn't a lot of POC representation, except for Rico as a Latino character.
So while Klune does a great job at representing the queer POV, he definitely hyper-focuses on it and leaves out the female and POC characters as stereotypical placeholders for his favorites to use.
Still loved it. Still gonna read more. Still cried like a baby and felt all the feelings. I have Faith TJ will improve one day.
I am once again asking for the editors to cut out the age gap.
Will I read the third one? Actually, given who it's about and that they're adults, I might.
TJ Klune is one of my favorite authors, top three along with Emily Henry and Matt Haig, and I will read his goodness-darned shopping list. Please please keep publishing all of his amazing stories. They are so full of humanity and love, even when they are full of robots. We are not deserving of him.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor for the ARC.
I tried. I really tried but this was a definite Did Not Finish for me. I adore this author and I normally love what he writes...however this series about the wolf pack is just not good. Its really the characters for me. I don't like any of them. I barely got through the first book but this one was just dead in the water for me a few chapters in. The characters are a bunch of boring drama queens with no humor like Mr. Klunes usual books. I actually already preordered this book too so that sucks...Super disappointed but this was a miss.
I went into this book thinking it can’t be nearly as good as the first. I actually thought I might need to lower my expectations because the first book was THAT good. I wanted more about Ox, Ox, Ox. We already knew Gordo’s story. Give me more about Joe, Joe, Joe.
Was I ever wrong.
TJ works his magic again and I am so hooked on this series. This unique fantasy world, the magic system, good vs bad, “mytic moonlight magic” mates (thanks Jessie for the phrase), this book has it ALL. TJ does a wonderful job drawing you in with the story, fully capturing you with emotional ties and polishing it off the perfect amount of romantic tension.
I absolutely cannot wait to see what the next book brings for the pack!
This book by Klune is a 3 star for me. I did not read the first book in the series, which a lot of people said they liked better according to reviews, so maybe I need to go backwards. However, I don't think that would make up for how all over the place this book seemed at times. I literally love TJ Klune's books and I get sucked in to the storylines, but this one just did not do it for.
honestly I expected more of this one. I still really enjoyed it but I love TJ's other books way better. however I do love the different aspect TJ was going in for this one so I would still recommend to the right audience.
The second installment of the Green Creek series told from Gordo's POV. Once again, I was captivated by this world and the characters. Klune has a way of creating a book full of love and despair and hope and tradgedy all wrapped up into heart wrenching storylines that I haven't read in a long, long time. I'll say it again: PLEASE release these as a boxed set. I must have them!

I don't want to say too much and spoil anything. Anyone who has ventured into Green Creek will not be disappointed - just order it! You may think to yourself "I loved Wolfsong so much, I'm worried that the sequel can't live up to the first" but you'd be wrong. Ravensong is an excellent addition to the series and finds all kinds of new ways to break your heart. Buckle up!
TJ Klune is an *extraordinary* author and he's done it again. Nobody does found family and queer stories like he does.
I received an ARC thanks to Tor and Netgalley, but I'd give this book 5/5 anyway :)
Ravensong is the second installment in the Green Creek series following the story of Gordo and Mark. The story picked right up where Wolfsong left off, so even though each book in this series focuses on a different couple, you need to read Wolfsong before moving forward.
Klune is a master of character development. Each character in this series has such a distinct point of view, and while each character is inherently flawed, he has a way of making you understand and support their highly self-destructive actions. Gordo and Mark are the sun and moon always chasing each other across the sky but never able to unite. Their love story spans almost 40 years and the journey had me laughing, crying, and shaking my fists into the air in frustration. Highly recommend this series for anyone looking to join a sexually fluid werewolf pack.
The first 25% of the story did feel a little repetitive, since we knew the backstory from Ox's point of view, but I would exist in Green Creek Oregon for the rest of my days if I could. And the mic drop at the end?! I will be needing Carter's story ASAP.
Thank you to Tor Publishing for the ARC of this rerelease of Ravensong. I can't wait to buy these new covers for my bookshelves.
"Ravensong" is a captivating novel that takes readers on an emotional journey through the lives of the characters. The story is set in Green Creek, a small town in the United States, and follows the life of Gordo Livingstone, a werewolf who is struggling with his identity and past traumas. The author, TJ Klune, skillfully weaves together themes of love, loss, family, and acceptance, making for a compelling and heart-wrenching read.
One of the most impressive aspects of the book is the depth of the characters. Each character is given a unique voice and personality, and their struggles and triumphs feel real and relatable. Gordo, the protagonist, is a flawed and complex character, but his journey towards self-acceptance and love is both inspiring and moving. The secondary characters are also well-developed, and their interactions with Gordo add layers of complexity to the story.
Klune's writing is lyrical and emotive, with vivid descriptions that transport readers into the world of Green Creek. The story is both haunting and beautiful, with moments of intense pain and heartbreak, as well as moments of joy and hope. The book deals with some heavy topics, such as abuse, trauma, and mental health, but Klune handles these issues with sensitivity and care, making for a powerful and impactful read.
In conclusion, "Ravensong" is a stunning and emotional read that will stay with readers long after they finish the book. Klune's beautiful writing and well-developed characters make for a compelling story that will tug at your heartstrings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good emotional journey and a well-written story.
As much as I enjoyed reading Wolfsong, Ravensong just felt too much the same. I started reading this book and I know we have now shifted focus to Mark and Gordo, but the events in the story are the same in the beginning and not enough else is happening to hold my interest. This world Klune created is wonderful, but I needed more to finish this book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tor, and most especially TJ Klune for the opportunity to read this eARC.
Initially I'd missed that this was part of an existing series and had to go back and read book 1 prior to diving into Ravensong. As a fan of some of TJ Klune's other works (The House on the Cerulean Sea, Under the Whispering Door), Ravensong hit rather differently but was still a very good time for those fond of the fantasy-romance genre.
Of course as soon as I finished Wolfsong I dove headfirst straight into Ravensong. Another gorgeous cover that draws readers in immediately. This is a solid, and better in my opinion, follow up to Wolfsong. TJ Klune just gets better with each and every book. We follow the story of the Green Creek saga again in this. Funny, emotional in all the ways. It is perfect.
Alright, into the review we go! As far as this book being the second book in the series, I feel like Klune did a good job hooking the reader back in and not really letting off steam as far as the plot went. In other words, the second book did not let the first book overshadow it! Yay! In book two, you definitely get a deeper dive into the side characters that you frustratingly don’t get to know in the first book. I got to say, Klune does have a penchant in this series for characters with traumatic backstories, it seems. Maybe that’s just the first two books in the series, but I’m not complaining! I loved getting to see the main characters working past their differences… eventually. The “slow-burn” aspect of their relationship was torture, but it made sense and was a really good representation of the process of rebuilding broken trust. So I guess one could say it was a painful masterpiece!
But that was not the only torture that Klune has in store for the reader in this book… Oh, man, thinking about that half of it makes me want to simultaneously break out into maniacal cackling and break down sobbing. An odd mix of emotions, to say the least. If you’re looking for a slow-burn, second-chance, tortuous supernatural romance with a cast of sassy characters and a conflict that has you on the edge of your seat emotionally and physically then I recommend Ravensong to you! But, for the love of everything good on this planet, read the first book first! Ravensong is book two! Don’t be that person, I beg of thee! I digress, happy reading y’all!
This series is addicting. I'm a sucker for stories with mates and found family. TJ Klune has a way with words that keep you hooked.
I went into this series with really high hopes based on the reviews it had received. While I was a bit underwhelmed with Wolfsong, I thought Ravensong was a much better book. One of the high spots of Wolfsong was Gordo, so when I found out that Ravensong was going to be Gordo's story I was super excited! I related with the characters a lot more in this book and loved the connection between Gordo and Mark. I loved that this book was more action-packed and didn't have as many 'valleys' as Wolfsong, where not much happens. I enjoyed the writing better in this one as well, but I still did not like the cringy jokes throughout. There were a few one-liner jokes that Klune adds, that I think can do without. I had the same thoughts in Wolfsong. Klune did a tremendous job of world-building and really connecting with Gordo throughout this book. At times you loved him and at times you wanted him to act a different way, but this has been one of the few times in a story where I really connected with a character, even at an emotional level. Beautiful book, with incredible stories, and really can't wait to continue on this incredible journey. I am in the minority, where I didn't love the first book, but this book truly sang to me and was a step above its predecessor. (It is not a perfect 5/5 for me, taking off a star for the cringy jokes throughout and the length of the book, I felt like a bit could have been taken out without effecting the story).
Overall I really enjoyed this book, the gorgeous cover drew me in right away and I loved the different timelines that the readers got to read, however the time jumps sometimes felt a bit abrupt. The politic details were very interesting but a little overwhelming at times, I would of liked to have a bit more time spent on the romance plot but the chemistry between the characters was still very believable! The overall feeling of tension can be felt throughout the book and I enjoyed the writing style!
