I love when picture book use cute animals to teach children important life lessons. Because they are learning and not realizing it.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This is a story about a chicken turtle who wants to make some friends on the farm. Homeboy thinks that no one will wanna be friends with a turtle, so he makes up a fantastical story about how one of his parents was a chicken and the other was a turtle, and he used to have feathers and could fly, until Owl dimes him out because owls are wise and know everything. Everyone assures him that they want to be his friend, even if he is just an ordinary chicken turtle.
The illustrations were bright, but weird. The bunny looked like a drawing of a human in a bunny costume, and honestly, I feel like most of the animals kind of had that look to them. In addition to that, for some reason the pig was the only animal that was wearing clothes for some reason. And I wouldn't want to read this book more than once. Any time the story used a bigger word, they'd interject the definition by leading with "by the way" and that really got on my nerves by the end. Overall I give this book 2.16 out of 5 stars.
This was a strange read, to be honest. The beginning was so abrupt that at first I thought the pages in the document were scrambled. I suppose the story was alright, but I was distracted by the illustrations, which were honestly a bit unsettling. It felt somewhat reminiscent of the video game Five Nights at Freddy's at parts (for those unfamiliar, it's a horror game).
Also...I was surprised to see that at one point, the rabbit character unintentionally (I'm giving the author the benefit of the doubt here) refers to Chucky using a fairly well-known Asian slur. I'm honestly not sure how it even made it into the book. I would suggest that it was removed, but I see the book is already published, so... I guess that's that.
Well this is story of Chucky the Chicken Turtle who claims to be an extremely rare breed who is part chicken and part turtle. My 9 year old stated he found the book quite creepy and not enjoyable at all. I found the defining of words used in the previous sentence to be quite annoying as well.
