The narration was excellent. The pacing of the story was well done and although there some parts that were predictable, there were still plenty of surprises.
This has a darker theme and I was nervous before starting but by the end of the story I was glad I listened to it. The narrator does a fantastic job keeping you engaged with the multiple characters. The story moved in a slow manner but in a way that made the story unfold at just the right time. I truly enjoyed it!
I LOVED this book! The characters were all so untrustworthy and it made for such an interesting read. I loved the amusement park vibes and especially the creepy clowns/dolls. The narration of this audiobook was spot on and I highly recommend!
I almost never re=read. There are just so many great books out there that I want to get to, but you know when I will make an exception? When Jennifer Hillier's Wonderland is released as an audio with the amazingly talented Eunice Wong as the narrator. Wonderland is a twisty, top-notch thriller in itself. I love the concept of a serial killer running loose through an amusement park. If you think about the family entertainment aspect of a fun park juxtaposed with the serial killer element, it's already perfect, but then Eunice Wong adds her own special something that makes every audio she narrates fantastic, and it takes Wonderland up to next notch, making this one of my favorite audios of the year!
I was so excited to see that this book was coming out on audio because Jennifer Hillier is one of my favorite authors! Let me tell you, this is a hidden gem. It has all the creepy aspects - small town that covers up crimes, a creepy amusement park, and a group of characters no one can trust.
If you are looking for a fast paced thriller on audio that easy to follow, I highly recommend this book!
All the stars!
Hillier can do no wrong in our eyes. Narrator was fantastic, literally will seek out books that Eunice Wong narrates.
Can't believe it took us this long to read this book, but glad we did. Dark, gritty and not for the faint of heart so be warned, BUT if you loved her other books like Jar of Hearts than I don't doubt you''ll love this one too.
Happy Reading!!
Jennifer Hillier does it again!!! Great characters, great plot and a creepy setting. Loved the mother daughter relationship struggles.
Wonderland
Jennifer Hillie,
Do you like amusement parks? What is your favorite part: the corndogs, cotton candy, the midway where you can win prizes, the roller coaster, Ferris wheel, or another ride or perhaps it is the Spook House or the clowns? Amusement parks have a magical atmosphere that brings smiles to our faces. Sounds like fun if you are a visitor but you may have a different outlook if you are an employee at the park.
Wonderland is an amusement park in Seaside, Washington. A disgruntled employee climbs the Wonder Wheel, takes a selfie and lifts his middle finger in a well known salute. Then he disappears. The decomposing unidentified body of a male is found in the park. So begins the first day on the job for the new deputy police chief Vanessa Castro. Her investigation leads to several missing males. The police are used to sweeping Wonderland problems under the rug in part because the town is dependent on the park for income.
Vanessa left her position in Seattle to escape a scandal. She doesn’t always make wise decisions such as having a one night stand with an employee of the park on her first night in town.
Author Jennifer Hillier kept me guessing. I had no idea the identity of the killer until close to the ending. There was more than one bad guy in this tale. I liked Oz and was disappointed that he bent to the will on Bianca Bishop. I wanted to see some romance between Vanessa and the Biker dude, perhaps in a future installment. I’ve never been fond of clowns and was not surprised to see the Clown Museum was a place of evil. This is a great thriller, and one fans won’t want to miss.
I absolutely loved this amusement creepy book setting.
The narrator, Eunice Wong is fantastic. Eunice elevated the story and I felt like I was solving the case with Vanessa Castro, the MC.
Eunice used a variety of tones and inflections and it was easy to distinguish many of the characters.
The murder mystery was hard to figure out for me till we received a hint and even then I didn’t want to believe it. I seriously kept repeating, “OMG” over and over again. It was such a great listen that I enjoyed every second of this creepy story! I can’t wait to see what Vanessa and her daughter are up to.
Perfect for fans who enjoy carnival setting and serial murder mystery.
Special thanks to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the ALC.
Delightfully creepy and twisted.
This is a book that would make an awesome movie. There were enough clues to keep you guessing without totally revealing the ending. And the thought of all these teens working in a creepy clown museum with a horrific past is enough to give you nightmares.
After just arriving to Sea Side as their new Deputy Police chief, Vanessa is called out to Wonderland amusement park after a decomposing body is found on the property. As she works to identify the body and solve the crime, a Wonderland employee who posted a picture atop the Wonder wheel that same morning goes missing. Digging into the history of the amusement park, she finds that Wonderworld with it's dark history is not just the fun filled park it seems.. Hillier brings to life some chilling characters as she weaves this unnerving twisty tale, that will make you reconsider what really goes on behind those fun park doors.
I listened to the audio version narrated by Eunice Wong. Although she can speak rather fast which was noticeable in the intro, I really enjoyed the subtle differences in her voice without sounding overly theatrical.
Special thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to listen to this audio book for an honest review
Vanessa Castro has just taken a new job as Deputy Chief of Police in the small town of Seaside, Washington when a unidentified body is found at Wonderland, the amusement park that is a huge part of the town’s economy. Her daughter has a summer job at the park as a Wonder Worker, which makes Vanessa even more determined to find the identity of the victim and catch the killer. Several side storylines branch out about the park and the workers there as Vanessa hunts down clues and finds that several male teens have gone missing in recent years.
This book was released in 2015 but is now being released as an audiobook. The narrator does a fantastic job. Her voice is clear, the voices she uses for different characters are distinct and recognizable, and I think listening to this one increased my enjoyment of the story. Her tone of voice added to the gritty sections, the speed she spoke at helped when the characters were attempting to speed things along, and I was very entertained the entire time.
Hillier’s books are always dark and suspenseful.. She often writes very depraved killers with some sort of sexual element to the story, and this one is no exception. The detailed descriptions of a few pivotal moments gave me chills and one left me pretty grossed out. I really liked the main character, Vanessa, and felt invested in her story.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
If I told you the plot, this would sound stupid. But I actually someone enjoyed reading it -- it managed to work as a suspenseful, engaging, character-driven novel even though the plot was a bit of-the-top.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book! I’m so glad I finally had the chance to read it (or listen to it actually) But so glad that I was approved this audio ARC from @netgalley and @mcmillianaudio. This has been on my tbr FOREVER! I always wanted to read it from the creepy clown cover (from original) It always looked so scary and I knew I’d love the book. And after listening to it, I was right! It was SO great! Jennifer Hillier does it again for me. I have not read a book by her that I did not love so far. Next, I only have to read Creep and Freak and then I’ve read all of her books. Can’t wait for those! Then my goal this year is to make sure I own all her books as well. I need to see them physically on my book shelves ya know.
But for those of you who don’t know much about this book, it’s about a theme park called Wonderland. It’s the biggest attraction in this small town. All the local kids want to work there.
Well, a teenage boy’s body was found and an investigation is underway. As it unfolds, turns out there have been numerous teenage boys who have gone missing that have worked at Wonderland. The story follows the investigation and you are constantly trying to figure out who is doing this? Who is taking and possibly killing all these boys? And why?
I loved trying to figuring out who it was and moving along with the investigation, unraveling clues as the detective found them here and there. So fun! I love books where you’re following the investigation. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a thriller with a great crime investigation. It’s a creepy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 stars for me!
I also have to give a shout-out to Eunice Wong.
She was the narrator for this book and she did a fantastic job! Also, listen to the Author’s Note at the end and see how this detective ties into another one of @jenniferhilliersbooks other books. Loved that whole part. Thank you for sharing all that with us.
received the audiobook ARC from netgalley/the publisher and was really excited to get into it. i’ve loved other books by jennifer hillier and had high hopes. while i think this one was entertaining and moved along at a really good pace, i wouldn’t put it at the top of the list of her books. i saw some other reviews saying this was predictable but i didnt see the ending coming. however, and this is probably very nitpicky, as a lawyer i found almost all of the interrogation and legal-adjacent scenes poorly written.
the narrator was great. i listened at 1.75x and still found it easily understandable (could’ve gone faster as i normally do but wanted to fully absorb this ARC). i vote read this one but don’t expect it to be your new fav thriller.
Jennifer Hillier has become one of my very favorite thriller authors! Wonderland was originally published only in ebook format back in 2015, but is being released in audiobook format next month. I was lucky enough to get asked to review a copy, and I am so glad because I didn't even have this one on my radar (and it definitely makes me realize that I need to go back and explore Hillier's backlist more because I have loved every book I've read by her). Wonderland will keep you guessing the entire time you are listening, and there are plenty of twists that you will not see coming. I loved the morally gray characters, and I loved that so many of the choices they made were in keeping with that gray area. I thought the amusement park setting was fun, and I think Hillier did a great job of capitalizing on the setting as an integral part of the plot. The audio narration was very well done (I am not sure if I have listened to Eunice Wong before, but she is now on my radar). Definitely put this one on your list!

If you’re looking for a creepy clown novel, this is not it. If you’re looking for a creepy amusement park novel, this is kind of it. If you’re looking for a small town detective murder mystery with a side of creepy amusement park and a tiny sprinkle of creepy clown, this is it.
The audio narration was excellent. I always understood where we were, who was speaking, and which character’s perspective we were seeing. Each voice was distinct and clear. I was kept intrigued and wanted to put my earbuds back in to listen more anytime I had to take them out.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you @netgalley & @jenniferhillierbooks for my audiobook of Wonderland! This was my first read of hers and I cannot wait to read her other books!
Wonderland is the hype of the town and where every teenager wants to work during the summer. What they don't know is about all of the secrets it has held over the years.
When a new deputy police chief arrives, she realizes that there have been a lot of missing boy cases over the years still unsolved. As she digs deeper & her daughter gets a job there, she soon realizes that Wonderland may be the reason for the disappearances!
Wow!!! All the stars for this one! A real rollercoaster of a novel… pardon the pun! This one had all the feels from and a dead body in the midway to other missing young boys along with a new town deputy sheriff are just the beginning. A captivating storyline about an amusement park with some creepy secrets. Lots of twists & turns kept me on the edge of my seat! Bold well written characters with twisted secrets were also a plus! I opted for the audiobook which was a remake of the original 2015 & it was AMAZING! Loved the narrators! Had a hard time putting this one down. Highly recommended for thriller readers out there! Jennifer Hillier has done it again!!!! Bravo!
Thank you #NetGalley for this ARC. My review is strictly voluntary.
I was so excited for a new Jennifer Hillier book to enjoy! I love all her past novels that I’ve read. This…didn’t quite read like a Jennifer Hillier thriller for me though.
It’s a crime novel revolving around some deaths and missing person issues at a creepy theme park…it has some great scary aspects…but didn’t have the normal wit and edge that I enjoy with her books.
The narrator for the audio did a great job. I was engaged with her style of voicing the various characters and would recommend this route if you decide to read this book.
Although this wasn’t my favorite of this author’s books, I will definitely continue to read and seek out books by her in the future. It may work better for others, it just fell a bit flat for me.
