The characters are fantastic and there are goloms, wraiths and other inhuman creatures. The story is creative beyond belief and very readable.

Thanks to Net Galley and Burning Chair for this ARC. This was an ok read, the blurb sounded great but the characters are a bit one dimensional and lurch from one crisis to another. Was a good read but don't think i'll bother with the others in the series as will just be a rehash of this one.

I should have really loved this book, given the blurb, but instead it was only *okay*. We are thrown straight into the action and the story pace is good. There’s a mad cap scientist and demons… but I like a bit more development of character even in action adventure steam punk and the writing jarred me. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book.

This book took a little while to pull me in, but once it did I was hooked! You watch the characters grow and change while facing dangerous situations. I was sad when the story was over. I cannot wait to read the sequel!

A fun and quick read, this team of misfits wants to save the world.
I really enjoyed the plot and the mismatched personalities of the group.
The descriptions of Victorian London and the rest of the world were done well.
Around the middle, the pace went a little slow, but other than that, the book was full of action, science and demons.
Life got in the way and didn't let me finish this great book in less than two weeks.
I can't wait for the next book!

It took effort to push through this one. It was well written and had some interesting things happening, but I had lots of trouble staying engaged in the story. None of the characters seem to react to things in any normal way. Even accounting for it being alt history and all, it was too hard to believe anything happening was genuine and not just there for the plot. Sadly not a series I will be continuing with, and I probably should have DNF’ed it.

a really fun start to the series that excellently juggles gothic fantasy with an atmospheric historical setting. propulsive story and charming characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Infernal Aether by Peter Oxley! Not only does it stay true to the Victorian era in which it is set, but it stands history on its head with the addition of a cunning and thoroughly disturbing invasion of London and the surrounding area by demons and all other creatures from hell itself.
The book's appeal goes far beyond the setting and plotline, however. It's the characters that make this such a fascinating read. From the seemingly ne'er-do-well lead character Augustus, who has a heart of gold and the worst luck in the world, to his elder brother Maxwell, a genius inventor whose best laid plans continually make things worse, to N'yotsu, a mysterious, sometimes magical warrior whose fight the brothers join. Yet my favourite character is that of the irrepressible, courageous Kate, a prostitute rescued by the trio of men, who in turns rescues them time and time again. The four of them together prove that teamwork is the way for them to survive, with each of them proving to be a vital cog at different times throughout the novel.
The Infernal Aether is a book difficult to put down, with its steampunk machinery pitted against demonic evil, and I look forward to reading more!
I happily received an ARC copy of #TheInfernalAether from #NetGalley .

I stopped and started this book half a dozen times. It has potential, I just couldn’t believe that any sane person would react to the events in this manner. Rationally speaking.

The words choice and voice seemed nice though, and has potential to be more. It was just not keeping my interest. I will have to put in the DNR pile.

Not enough to keep my attention through it really. Wasn't a big fan but that is most likely my fault for not being a massive fan of period pieces such as this one.

The Infernal Aether
By Peter Oxley
This was such a joy to read! It had all the elements I find great in a novel. There's creatures, demons, snarky characters ( the ones you least expect), time period of London in about 1860s (I think), one brother a genius inventor, the other has a sword that has magic, plenty of humor, unpredictable situations, great dialogue, and fun plot. My favorite character was the maid, ex-prostitute! Hilarious! She really was braver than the men!
I giggled a lot reading this book! Can't wait to read the rest in the series.
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this terrific book

This reads like a kind of steampunk/paranormal tribute to Sherlock Holmes.
.A complicated plot involving a demon, two brothers (one a genius and the other a more 'physical' type with angst and a love of swords), a stranger who seems to need rescuing at first but turns out to be much more interesting. There are also lots of monsters, a no-nonsense ex-prostitute, various characters who really are in need of help and various police and army officers who appear from time to time, often en masse.
The setting is Victorian London, heavily gothic with paranormal and steam punk elements.
Honestly, I didn't enjoy this a lot. I'm not into Sherlock and I prefer my steampunk worked out in more detail.
On the other hand there was plenty of swashbuckling action, flashing eyes and swords and exploding gadgets and I did enjoy the character of Kate - who took on enemies with whatever came to hand and dispensed common sense to the less gifted brother whenever he had an attack of depression and over-indulgence in alcohol (often). The gothic gloom was perfectly done and the Holmesian references were amusing.

Peter Oxley crafts a historical and mysterious story — an enjoyable journey. Perfect for readers who enjoy gothic, supernatural fiction. The book is a promising lead to a full series.
