What a fast paced, "locked room" political thriller! A threat to the President sends him, his wife and numerous trusted agents to a secure underground facility. But should all of the agents be trusted? Has he avoided the threat, or is it locked in the facility with him? Inside Threat has a well written, credible, twisting plot that kept me guessing throughout! I thoroughly enjoyed the book! Thank you to
the author, publisher, Scene of the Crime and Netgalley for my advanced copy. The opinions of my review are my own.
About two weeks ago, I was looking for a good binge watch and came across The Night Agent on Netflix. I loved it, so when I was looking for something to read and saw Inside Threat by Matthew Quirk WHO ALSO WROTE THE NIGHT AGENT…sign me up!
So the story is one of those political intrigue thrillers, where you pretty much know the hero will save the day and things will (mostly) be all right, but the question is just who are the bad guys, and how much “willing suspension of disbelief” is required to enjoy it? This particular story revolves around the Secret Service, in particular Agent Erik Hill. He is known for heroic actions and doing whatever it takes to keep the government safe. And there is a ton of action…
After years of diligent performance as an Agent, Erik is becoming disillusioned, and when things start to happen, and it turns out the government is truly under attack, Erik knows he has to do whatever it takes to protect both the people and the institution he has sworn to serve and protect. One reviewer called it “Hunger Games meets Jack Ryan,” and that’s a pretty fair description.
It reads like it was written with a movie version in mind, and it is perfect for that, or for a one or two day binge read. A bit simplistic with the political intrigue, but I was glad it didn’t sink into some MAGA BS, but maintained the tension from the get-go right up til the end. Four stars. I admit I am looking forward more to Season 2 of Night Agent than I am to Mr. Quirk’s next thriller, but I still appreciate the entertainment and appreciate William Morrow and NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for this honest review. Four stars.
The President has been forced to flee the White House. Only the most trusted agents are allowed to accompany him. Secret Service Agent Eric Hill is with the President but he has been hearing rumors, rumors that someone is trying to take over the government. He doesn’t know who to trust, maybe not even the President. Could there be traitors inside the bunker with them? This book is action filled from the first page, you never know who to trust. It is definitely a page turner. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Your basic action packed, government conspiracy thriller. Big on action, characters are pretty one-dimensional. No one will mistake t for great literature, but it's a quick fun read.
I absolutely loved this book. I have many of the scenarios. Well written and truly believeable. I could not not put it down.
Here's the thing: INSIDE THREAT is a comic book written for the movies. And as a comic book written for the movies it's a reasonably strong performance. As an actual novel, however... uh, it's not that strong.
I'd give it good marks as a run-and-gun thriller, but the political aspects were far too thin and simplistic to categorize it as a political thriller. And the ending approached the mawkish, presumably a requirement for a movie-novel these days.
I hope Matthew Quirk gets his movie out of this, I really do, but I also hope he remembers that a writer as talented as he is has far, far better novels in him than this.
An interesting political thriller that is The Hunger Games meets Jack Ryan.
Thank you William Morrow for the digital review copy.
