I am building out my garden with raised garden beds so this was a great resource to pick up. This book covers a lot of basics on setting up and getting started. There are many options for all kinds of sizes. There is even a chapter on building supports and trellises.
Another great beginner's guide to gardening and while I am a few years into this journey, I enjoyed going back to the basics in this book. Compared to a few others, this book focused more on setting up your garden and getting it ready than the details surrounding the plants - companions, seasons, seed starting and so on.
So while this one is great with the basics, for me it doesn't include much beyond after you have your beds built. But it does have some great plans and "recipes" for building all sorts of garden beds which I found to be informative and easy to follow.
I've always been interested in gardening and growing my own food. I recently built myself a ladder planter for my deck to grow herbs and it got me interested in raised bed gardening to expand into growing vegetables and be even more self-reliant in terms of food production.
This is a great guide for beginners who have never tried raised bed gardening, it's full of tips and tricks and I learned so much. It's less about general gardening tips and more about the raised beds specifically, but it's a great place to start!
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for a review copy!
Thank you for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. A very helpful and informative book about raised bed gardening
The idea of gardening and sustainably growing our own food has been a fascinating concept for me! Through trial and error, I have found that raised bed gardening works the best for me! Raised Bed Gardening: A Complete Beginner’s Guide is a great tool filled with information about techniques for building your raised beds and using them to make the most of your space and gardens! This book isn’t a guide for gardening, but instead focuses on the different types of raised beds and how to build and use them correctly!
This book is all about raised beds. Tara Nolan takes us through different kinds of raised beds, from a typical one you can get in the garden store to a small one for your patio. For each type of raised bed discussed plans and steps for building them on your own. She has designs for large spaces and small spaces. And for those that aren’t handy, how to use those you can buy in the store. There is also a chapter on raised beds for specific plans, including a strawberry planter. The last chapter is about supporting your plants, building trellises. I found this one quite interesting. I would like to try the cold frame or the green house to go over a raised bed.
I love how this is really geared toward those of us who have never tried to do raised bed gardening. I have had no experience with anything other than the back breaking, bend over and plant & pick of traditional gardening. After reading this book, I now feel prepared to start this for myself!!
Thank you so much for writing this book. I'm not a beginner to gardening nor to raised bed gardening but I thought this book gave a great overview on how to make various raised beds, what type of soil to put in, and soil health. I While I was reading through, a raised bed style -the one with the sitting bench attached-caught my eyes. We have a few raised beds that were intended to have sitting benches but we never got to it. I called my husband to come see and he asked if there were plans for it. Lo and behold, the back of the book has a whole section on raised beds projects in case you wanted to construct one yourself. Bravo you! Thanks for getting my inspiration running. Can't wait for this year's growing season!
This book is great if you’re interested in building a raised bed but don’t know how or where to start. It has lots of photos and step by step on how to build different types of raised beds. Very good book, lots of information and it’s easy to follow. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
A book talking entirely about ways to build raised beds.
Super impressive, but I was expecting more about actual gardening and not a book about how to DIY raised beds - which to be honest, I probably will never do.
It's a great book, but I feel like it should be made much clearer that this book is literally about building raised beds and not about gardening with raised beds, and hence I couldn't give it more than 3 stars.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley (thank you!), and this is my honest review.
Thank you to the author, Quarto Publishing Group – Cool Springs Press, New Shoe Press and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Enthusiastic but novice gardener here, and thus was looking forward to a solid beginner's guide. I found the book filled with a *lot* of information, but not quite what I was expecting. Most of it dealt with building your own raised beds - and these instructions were fairly complicated and required a lot of special equipment. The gardening aspect seemed to be more of an afterthought. I am sure there are those that will find this a great resource, for me it was more of a miss.
The title is a little confusing. I thought it was going to be a book on how and what to plant in a raised bed for beginners. That was not what this book was about. It is a very comprehensive guide on how to build various raised garden beds. The photos are great and the instructions are very good. If you are looking to make your own raised beds for your garden this would be a great resource.
I would like to thank Tara Nolan, Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
It’s that time again- Spring is here for some of us and for the rest, it’s just around the corner. Time to start planting, or at least thinking about it.
❓Are you a gardener of any sort❓
I have a few raised beds with some fruit trees and herbs and flowers. I’d love to do more but that’s about all I can manage. And just barely manage at that.
Happy Publication Day to Raised Bed Gardening by Tara Nolan!
A great addition to anyone looking for raised bed solutions.
There are lots of plans on how to build your own, and several different ones to choose from.
It also teaches you the benefits of raised beds and even how to compost.
Great book for a beginning gardener or someone who is looking to change their landscape with fun new beds.
Thank you to @quartobooksus for this ARC. I loved it!
I had a hard time figuring out who this book was intended for: it's not about raising vegetables and instead seems to be more about constructing the beds. But I also don't really consider it a beginners guide because it requires extensive and expensive equipment to make the beds. I was expecting a simple hammer and nails/screws/wood to make a simple first time bed with some instructions on raising certain items (e.g., herbs or vegetables). But you won't get any specifics on any vegetable/herb and instead the guide is much more general.
The book breaks down as follows: raised bed basics, raised beds for big spaces, raised beds for small spaces, raised beds with purpose, not handy? no problem, support your plants, resources. Within those sections, you'll find chapters on soil for raised beds, building a raised bed with benches/upcycled wood, corners, stock tanks, fabric pots, burlap wrapped plastic pails, etc., obelisk and lashing techniques, trellis, greenhouse covers, metal frames, etc.
The book is nicely photographed but the directions are rather dense and the book feels very crammed. There is a LOT of information here and it seems like a bit too much at times. I didn't feel like it was suited for the beginner at all since there is so much thrown at you and most of it is specific to one type of project or other that many won't need/use.
You'll need a lot of tools: just to do a basic planter requires a tape measure, hammer, circular saw, carpenter's square, rubber mallet, level, reciprocating saw, drill with countersink bit, eye and ear protection, work gloves. There are solid illustrations for the projects and you'll have concise measurements for the wood so you can cut it perfectly. But again, if you have the tools/equipment great - but how many people living in small homes or apartments/condos have all those tools at the handy?
In all, there wasn't much here that I could use, which was frustrating. And I definitely did not feel confidant in making the beds, either. But this is professionally photographed, illustrated and laid out. Clearly a lot of work has gone into this book. After reading Raise Bed Gardening A Complete Beginners Guide by
Tara Nolan I feel confident I can go and build my own raised beds. The information is easy to follow. The book give extra tips about soil and bed covers to make it like a green house.
Thank you NetGalley, Tara Nolan and Quarto Plublishing group-Cool Springs Press, New Shoe Press for the arc.
Tara Nolan, I am IMPRESSED! This is the how-to guide that every DIY person needs! She provides complete directions for creating raised beds, including measurements and the types of wood. Better still, she provides many styles of plans for raised beds and also frames for cold weather. She even gives ideas for those who are handy with wood tools, although her recommendations are no more complicated than a circular saw.
This book makes the construction look so simple that I am inspired to try my own. Hardware store, here I come!
Some really great ideas for either building raised beds from scratch or repurposing items that you already have. Detailed and easy to follow instructions
This is such a good beginner guide on raised gardening. It has plentiful pictures, concise explanations. It shows different ways of building things like hoop beds. The book goes over things like choosing the size of a raised bed, how far to space them, what to make them out of, garden beds for large or small yards, what NOT to use, and more. As a gardening novice who wants to garden this year- this has been extremely helpful as I start planning my garden beds. They even address how to build garden beds when you've got a super sloped yard! I highly recommend this to the beginning gardener!
This is a good beginner guide to raised bed gardening if you want building plans and how to information on setting up a new raised bed. I appreciated that Nolan tells you to beware of things like toxic chemicals in cinder blocks but there’s no information on other toxins to be aware of in containers like plastics and cloth bags. There are detailed instructions for building your own raised beds of various types and also other gardening supports.
Do note that this book is about starting out and building or buying your raised beds. It does not go into plants. I’m not sure why the title mentions herbs and tomatoes since it doesn’t really go into that kind of topic other than you can see those plants growing in the photos sometimes.
I read a temporary digital preview copy of this book via NetGalley.
When I requested this from NetGalley I thought it would be about gardening but it’s a full book about the different type of raised gardening beds and how to build them yourself. There’s a few brief pages about gardening. If you’re handy and own power tools and are looking for flower beds to build then this is the book for you. If you’re looking for a how-to garden manual using raised beds look elsewhere.
